Role of environmental factors for the vertical distribution (0-1000 m) of marine bacterial communities in the NW Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Ghiglione, J. F.; Palacios, C.; Marty, J. C.; Mevel, G.; Labrune, C.; Conan, P.; Pujo-pay, M.; Garcia, N.; Goutx, M..
Bacterioplankton plays a central role in energy and matter fluxes in the sea, yet the factors that constrain its variation in marine systems are still poorly understood. Here we use the explanatory power of direct multivariate gradient analysis to evaluate the driving forces exerted by environmental parameters on bacterial community distribution in the water column. We gathered and analysed data from a one month sampling period from the surface to 1000m depth at the JGOFS-DYFAMED station (NW Mediterranean Sea). This station is characterized by very poor horizontal advection currents which makes it an ideal model to test hypotheses on the causes of vertical stratification of bacterial communities. Capillary electrophoresis single strand conformation...

Calidad físico química y bacteriológica de las aguas alrededor de la ciudad de Guayaquil 1996 - 1998 OceanDocs
Valencia, M.; Palacios, C.; Rodríguez, A..

Evolution of fat soluble vitamin content of ewe’s milk from conventional semi-extensive and organic production systems Organic Eprints
Revilla, I.; Palacios, C.; Hidalgo, C.; Alvarez, R.; Rodriguez, P..
During a 12-month study, bulk-tank milk was collected once a month from organic (O) (n=3) and conventional semi-extensive (CSE) (n=5) ewe’s dairy farms in the Castile and León region (northwest Spain). CSE is the most similar conventional production system to the organic one because they are both part-time grazing system. Milk samples were analysed for retinol, -tocopherol and -tocopherol. The production system and the sampling month affecting the milk fat vitamin content were investigated. Results show that organic ewe’s milk showed significantly higher contents of -tocopherol and -tocopherol and consequently of total tocopherol possibly due to the higher green pasture intake (1,02 vs 0.48 kg sheep-1 day-1) and the lower milk yield (53.5 vs 88.7)....

A SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS OF ORGANIC VERSUS CONVENTIONAL SYSTEMS OF SHEEP-FARMING Organic Eprints
Hidalgo, C.; Rodríguez, P.; Álvarez, R.; Palacios, C.; Revilla, I..
In the Mediterranean Agriculture, the organic production constitutes a real possibility for sustainable development, it can keep a population in these areas and provide it with a decent work. This paper try to establish differences between conventional and organic systems of production, so that observation of these differences would lead to conclusions relating to the level of efficiency of one system as against the other. To achieve this objective, the research team analyzed the evolution of seventeen milk sheep farms in various places in the Castilla y León Region for a whole year. The study consisted in the modeling of the results of a Cobb-Douglas production function. The findings reveal that organic farms have higher production levels with the same...

Organic vs Conventional Suckling Lamb Production: Product Quality and Consumer Acceptance Organic Eprints
Revilla, I.; Vivar-Quintana, A.M.; Lurueña-Martínez, M.A.; Palacios, C.; Severiano-Pérez, P..
Samples of suckling lambs (n=40) of two breeds reared under conventional and organic conditions were analysed to asses physico-chemical characteristics, including instrumental texture, and nutritional quality in terms of fatty acid composition. Consumer acceptance was also studied using the home-use test. Results revealed that organic suckling lamb meat is healthier as shown by the lower saturated fatty acid levels, the higher polyunsaturated fatty acid contents and the higher 6/3 ratiko. The organic meat had lower instrumental hardness, received higher scores in all sensory parameters, and had statistically better fat sensation and higher ratings for overall liking. These results lend support to the notion among consumers that organic products are...

Consumer Appreciation of Carcass Quality of Organic vs Conventional Suckling Lamb Production Organic Eprints
Palacios, C.; Revilla, I.; Vivar-Quintana, A.M.; Lurueña-Martínez, M.A.; Severiano-Pérez, P..
Carcass characteristics of sucking lambs (n= 40) of two breeds reared under conventional and organic conditions were analysed including objective and subjective parameters for fatness and conformation, meat and fat colour. Consumer acceptance was also studied using the home-use test. Results showed that the characteristics of the carcass of suckling lamb were similar for both types of production systems pointing out that organic production system did not affect fatness or muscle development. However, organic meat was darker (higher L* and a* values) probably related with the higher amount of exercise, although fat was not more yellow. In contrast consumers did not consider organic meat darker and there were not significant differences in appearance related...

Palacios, C.; Lafuente, M.A.; de la Fuente, L.F..
Abstract The aim of the experiment was to verify the efficacy of the treatment of psoroptic mange in a flock of Churra sheep farmed under organic production conditions, using alternative methods. One group, C Control (N=9), was given no treatment, a second group, TAH Antihomotoxic (N=10), was intramuscularly administered an antihomotoxic preparation every two days, thus receiving a total of seven injections over a two-week period. The third group, TCI Citronella (N=10), was topically administered a 1% solution of 50%essential Citronella Java oil and 50% Potassium Soap twice daily, in each milking, during the two-week period. A fourth group, TCIT Citronella+Thymol (N=10), was topically administered Citronella with 1% mother tincture of Thymol to boost the...

QUALITY OF LIFE AND QUALITY OF WORK LIFE IN ORGANIC VERSUS CONVENTIONAL FARMERS Organic Eprints
Alvarez, R.; Rodriguez, P.; Hidalgo, C.; Palacios, C.; Revilla, I.; Aguirre, I.; Batalla, I.; Eguinoa, P..
Sustainability is a concept developed from economic, ecological and social strategies in the decision-making process. Quality of life and quality of work life are two indicators very related to the viability and sustainability of farms. They are located into the social sustainability but in some cases the production system affects all three aspects of sustainability and transcends into a lifestyle. Organic production in several small ruminant farms analyzed in Spain provides quality of life and quality of work significantly better than conventional ones.

Comparison of the Sensory Characteristics of Suckling Lamb Meat: Organic vs Conventional Production Organic Eprints
Revilla, I.; Lurueña-Martínez, M.A.; Blanco-Lopez, M.A.; Vivar-Quintana, A.M.; Palacios, C.; Severiano-Pérez, P..
40 L. dorsi muscles from the left half carcass of suckling lambs raised under both organic and conventional systems were evaluated by a sixteen-member trained panel, following QDA methodology. After developing a common vocabulary for the evaluation of characteristics, 30 meat descriptors in raw and grilled meat were selected. Additionally, overall appreciation was evaluated by 140 consumers in a home-use test. The results obtained show that the appearance of the organic meat was more fibrous, darker, and with a lower aroma intensity than the conventional counterpart, but with no differences in homogeneity or juiciness. In grilled meat, the organic samples had less subcutaneous fat, less fatness, a less fibrous texture and less aroma intensity, but also less...
