This study combines survey information and GIS based optimization model to identify the optimal distribution of broiler litter in crop production. The results obtained provide more plausible transportation routes than the method that does not utilize all these constraints.

We used a memory shortening transformation method to forecast the future prices of the seven selected commodities in the Southeast USA. These forecasted prices were used to find the optimal crop selection in a model farm in a representative county of each of the ten states in the Southeast US under three likely climate change scenarios. It is found that the Hadley climate change scenario may be benign compared to Hot and Very Hot Scenarios.

Poultry litter can be used as plant nutrients or cattle feed. Both of these alternatives may increase phosphorus concentration in the nearby watershed. Use of phosphorus consistent litter application rule in nutrient management combined with permit system has potential to curtail the over production of litter and prevent the possible contamination of water.

This study explores the evidence of convergence in the U.S agriculture sector by using the state level total factor productivity (TFP) data. The empirical investigation conducted in this study does not find any evidence of convergence while looking at the state level TFP. However, there seems to be some support for convergence at the regional level. Parametric and nonparametric models indicate significant role of human capital in explaining the regional discrepancies in agriculture productivity across states.

According to Article 3.4 of the Kyoto Protocol, agricultural soil could be used as a sink for carbon sequestration and hence it may provide an alternative venue to sequester the greenhouse gas emission. We calculated the profitability of using broiler litter as a source of plant nutrients using the phosphorus consistent litter application rule. The cost saving by using litter is 37% over the use of chemical fertilizer alone to meet the nutrient needs of major crops grown in Alabama. In the optimal solution, only a few routes of all the possible routes developed were used for inter- and intra- county litter hauling. If litter is not adopted as the sole source of crop nutrients, the best environmental policy may be to pair the phosphorus consistent rule with taxes, marketable permits, and subsidies.

In this study, we examine the choice of numeraire price (equation) for profit function models of Iowa agriculture. The choice of numeraire is evaluated by forecasting accuracy and with a non-nested specification test.

We estimate an almost ideal-demand system (AIDS) to assess the impacts of cholesterol information on the market demand of meats in the U.S. Our study indicates a significant negative impact of cholesterol information on the market demand of beef and pork and a significant positive influence on chicken demand. The study further demonstrated that the flow of carbohydrate information lessened the magnitude of cholesterol health information elasticities.

Test of Convergence in Agricultural Factor Productivity: A Semiparametric Approach

We tested for club convergence in U.S. agricultural total factory productivity using a sigma convergence test. We used the same club of states as used by McCunn and Huffman as well as different states within 10 clubs identified by the cluster analysis. Results showed convergence was evident only in a few club groups. Clusters group identified using a statistical method identified only converging clubs. Variables affecting total factor productivity among states were identified using parametric, semiparametric and nonparametric methods. This study uses a bivariate probit model with partial observability to examine Louisiana beef producers’ awareness of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and how awareness translates to application to the program. Results indicate that awareness of and application to the EQIP depend on portion of income derived from off-farm sources, extent of previous best management practice adoption at one’s own expense, household income, farmed land that is highly erodible, contact with Natural Resource Conservation Service and extension service personnel, and producer age.

One of the challenges in estimating economic impacts of recreational activity and natural resource use is collecting survey data when the underlying population is not perfectly known. We combine bootstrapping techniques with input output analysis to estimate impacts from recreational activity at a barrier island in Louisiana. Per capita expenditure point estimates are bootstrapped and the 1,000 bootstrapped samples are shocked into an input output model to develop confidence intervals of economic impacts between the two surveys. The income capitalization approach is used, based on expenditure and nonmarket values collected from travel-cost and contingent valuation methodologies, to measure the feasibility of running a self-sustaining recreational site in coastal Louisiana. Through Internet and intercept surveys, a total of 2,696 respondents, 88% of them anglers, provided information on economic expenditures, destination preferences, and preferences for specific site amenities regarding Elmer's Island. The purchase and subsequent opening of the area to the public were found to be self-sustaining even when considering conservative economic estimates.

This study examines if social capital has a role to play in environmental Kuznets curve estimation. It uses information from the World Values Survey to extract the variables representative of the social capital to develop an index using a principal component analysis. Estimation involves the use of parametric and semiparametric panel models to examine the role of social capital in the EKC behavior.

We analyzed the effect of part time farming in the US using a panel data analysis method. Data from three census years on ten southern states and the counties therein indicated that part time farming has a positive impact on the total value of the farm products produced. Although the result is preliminary, it sheds an important light on the changing farm structure in the USA.

A logistic regression procedure was used to assess the impact of socioeconomic attributes on the best management practices (BMPs) adoption decision by Louisiana dairy farmers relative to cost-share and fixed incentive payments. Analysis of the steps in the BMP adoption decision process indicated visits between producers and the U.S. Department of Agriculture–Natural Resource Conservation Service significantly increase likelihood of BMP adoption. Producer willingness-to-pay results indicate that marginal increases in dairy BMP adoption and associated improvement in environmental quality require increased technical and financial assistance.

This study compares parametric and semiparametric smoothing techniques to estimate the environmental Kuznet curve. The ad hoc functional form where income is related either as a square or a cubic function to environmental quality is relaxed in search of a better nonlinear fit to the pollution-income relationship for panel data.
