Dealing with iron metabolism in rice: from breeding for stress tolerance to biofortification Genet. Mol. Biol.
Santos,Railson Schreinert dos; Araujo Júnior,Artur Teixeira de; Pegoraro,Camila; Oliveira,Antonio Costa de.
Abstract Iron is a well-known metal. Used by humankind since ancient times in many different ways, this element is present in all living organisms, where, unfortunately, it represents a two-way problem. Being an essential block in the composition of different proteins and metabolic pathways, iron is a vital component for animals and plants. That is why iron deficiency has a severe impact on the lives of different organisms, including humans, becoming a major concern, especially in developing countries where access to adequate nutrition is still difficult. On the other hand, this metal is also capable of causing damage when present in excess, becoming toxic to cells and affecting the whole organism. Because of its importance, iron absorption, transport and...

Similaridade genética entre cultivares de marmeleiro avaliadas por marcadores AFLP PAB
Manica‑Berto,Roberta; Pegoraro,Camila; Mistura,Claudete Clarice; Bresolin,Adriana Pires Soares; Rufato,Andrea De Rossi; Fachinello,José Carlos.

Uni- and multivariate methods applied to the study of the adaptability and stability of white oat PAB
Rother,Vianei; Verdi,Cezar Augusto; Thurow,Liamara Bahr; Carvalho,Ivan Ricardo; Oliveira,Victoria Freitas de; Maia,Luciano Carlos da; Venske,Eduardo; Pegoraro,Camila; Oliveira,Antonio Costa de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to compare uni- and multivariate biometric methods to evaluate the adaptability and stability of an important group of white oat (Avena sativa) cultivars grown in Southern Brazil. The used experimental design was a randomized complete block, in a factorial arrangement of 12 environments x 7 cultivars, with three replicates. The analysis of variance and the methods of Eberhart & Russel, Annicchiarico, and the harmonic mean of the relative performance of predicted genetic values (MHPRVG) were assessed. In the general comparison of the methods, the 'UPFA Gaudéria' and 'URS Guapa' genotypes were more stable regarding grain yield. The 'UPFA Gaudéria' and 'URS-21' genotypes stood out for hectoliter weight, presenting...

Rice genotypes for drought tolerance: morphological and transcriptional evaluation of auxin-related genes Bragantia
Madabula,Frederico Pedro; Santos,Railson Schreinert dos; Machado,Nata; Pegoraro,Camila; Kruger,Mariana Madruga; Maia,Luciano Carlos da; Sousa,Rogerio Oliveira de; Oliveira,Antonio Costa de.
ABSTRACT Drought stress affects crop quality and productivity. The challenge of increasing food availability for a growing worldwide demand relies on the development of tolerant cultivars that will need to be adapted to arid and semi-arid areas. In order to help the understanding of rice response to stress, the phenotypic response of 6 Brazilian rice cultivars and 2 different crosses between them were characterized under drought conditions. Since gene regulation is an important part of root morphological responses to stressful conditions, 4 genes related to auxin response and root modifications (OsGNOM1 CRL4, OsIAA1, OsCAND1 and OsRAA1) were evaluated. The expression of these genes was analyzed in stressed rice using public available microarray data and...

Effects of hypoxia storage on gene transcript accumulation during tomato fruit ripening Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Pegoraro,Camila; Santos,Railson Schreinert dos; Krüger,Mariana Madruga; Tiecher,Aline; Maia,Luciano Carlos da; Rombaldi,Cesar Valmor; Oliveira,Antonio Costa de.
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is a climacteric fruit, i.e., during ripening an increase in ethylene synthesis and high rate of respiration are observed. Low oxygen levels might inhibit or block ethylene biosynthesis and therefore retard the ripening process. Despite commercial applications of low oxygen treatments, the precise mode of action of low oxygen in fruit tissues and ripening is not well understood. In order to delineate the molecular responses to low oxygen stress in fruits, hypoxia-responsive tomato genes encoding heat shock factors, heat shock proteins, and enzymes involved in fermentation and ethylene synthesis pathways were analyzed. In this study, tomato fruit stored under hypoxia conditions showed that HSP17.7 and HSP21 genes were highly...

Boron and calcium sprayed on 'Fuyu' persimmon tree prevent skin cracks, groove and browning of fruit during cold storage Ciência Rural
Ferri,Valdecir Carlos; Rombaldi,Cesar Valmor; Silva,Jorge Adolfo; Pegoraro,Camila; Nora,Leonardo; Antunes,Pedro Luiz; Girardi,Cesar Luiz; Tibola,Casiane Salete.
Flesh softening, skin browning and rotting are chief problems during cold storage (CS) of 'Fuyu' Persimmon. We studied the effects of boron (B) and calcium (Ca) sprayed on the trees during three consecutive years, on the development of skin cracks, grooves and browning in persimmon fruit under CS in Farroupilha, RS, Brazil (29°31' south, 51°21' west, about 750 m altitude). A homogeneous orchard area of 0.5 ha was delimitated and three sets of five plants for each treatment were randomly selected. The persimmon trees were sprayed at a 20 day interval, from 15th January until harvest, for three consecutive years, with: T1) water; T2) calcium nitrate at 0.5% (m/v); T3) calcium chloride at 0.5% (m/v); and T4) boron at 0.3% (m/v). The fruit were harvest with...
