A review of geological and geophysical observations points towards a worldwide kinematic change at around 6 Ma. The synchronicity of many manifestations (tectonics, magmatism, kinematics, ecological events, among others) at ~6 Ma, similar to those recognized from time to time on the geological timescale, argues for a global geodynamic event that has led to many regional consequences on Earth's surface. In particular, we propose that this global event was the main trigger for the three fold increase in sediment deposits in the world ocean over the last ~5 Ma, but also for the onset of the Messinian Salinity Crisis in the Mediterranean area, one of the most severe ecological crises in the Earth's history. We suggest this Messinian revolution to be the last... |

Detailed analyses of seismic profiles and boreholes in the Valencia Basin (VB) reveal a differentiated basin, the Minorca Basin (MB), lying between the old Mesozoic Valencia Basin sensu strico (VBss) and the young Oligocene Liguro-Provençal Basin (LPB). The relationship between these basins is shown through the correlation of four Miocene-to-present-day megasequences. The Central and North Balearic Fracture Zones (CFZ and NBFZ) that border the MB represent two morphological and geodynamical thresholds that created an accommodation in steps between the three domains. Little to no horizontal Neogene movements are found for the Ibiza and Majorca Islands. In contrast, the counterclockwise movement of the Corso-Sardinian blocks induced a counterclockwise... |

Sediments deposited after the peak of the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) in the Apennine foredeep of Italy embody a topic debated on both chronostratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental grounds. We performed micropalaeontological (calcareous nannofossil and dinoflagellate cyst) analyses on four stratigraphic sections (Monticino, Civitella del Tronto, Fonte dei Pulcini, Fonte la Casa) and reused those previously published from Maccarone. All sections belong to the p-ev2 Fm. that includes the Colombacci deposits, usually considered emblematic of the Lago Mare in the area. Marine microfossils recorded in previous studies have often been neglected or considered reworked and hence discarded. We propose the occurrence of at least four marine inflows between 5.36... |

Morphological and geodynamic thresholds play an important part in the sedimentary, biotope and water exchanges. The geodynamic evolution of the Mediterranean area, especially in the Valencia and Adriatic basins, is strongly infl uenced by its ante-Neogene history. The localisation of existing thresholds at that time, and their impact on the following tectonic and sedimentary evolutions still remain largely unknown. In this work, we will try to reconstruct this evolution and better understand the part of these thresholds, in particular during the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC, 5.96-5.32 Ma). We provide here a complete view of the Neogene sedimentary infi lling for the both Valencia and Adriatic basins thanks to a compilation and the interpretation of... |

Morphological sills condition sedimentary, water and fauna exchanges between different domains. In particular, sills are crucial factors to consider during the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) palaeogeographic evolution (5.97–5.33 Ma) of the NW Mediterranean area. Here we focus on the Ebro River and its up to now unexplained short Messinian onshore length (~100 km) compared to that of the Messinian Rhone River (~480 km) despite similar present-day drainage basins. Thanks to an extensive seismic and borehole dataset, we present a new interpretation of a complete 270 km long Messinian Ebro incised-valley system course underneath the present-day continental margin and bathyal basin and its related distal detrital deposits. These results favour a syn-MSC or... |

Contourites are common morphological features along continental margins where currents encounter the seafloor. They can provide long-term archives of palaeoceanography, may be prone to sediment instability, and can have a great potential for hydrocarbon exploration. Despite their importance and increasingly recognised ubiquitous occurrence worldwide, the link between oceanographic processes and contourite features is poorly constrained. In particular, it is unclear under which specific conditions sediments are mobilised, modified and deposited by bottom currents. Here, we aim to determine key bottom current characteristics (velocity and bottom shear stress) affecting contourite deposition, by assuming that recent oceanographic regimes may be extended back... |

The sedimentary architecture of basins and passive margins is determined by a complex interaction of parameters, including subsidence, eustasy, and sediment supply. A quantification of the post-rift (20 Ma-0 Ma) vertical movements of the Gulf of Lion (West Mediterranean) is proposed here based on the stratigraphic study of sedimentary paleomarkers using a large 3D grid of reflection seismic data, correlations with existing drillings, and refraction data. Post-rift subsidence was measured by the direct use of sedimentary geometries analysed in 3D and validated by numerical stratigraphic modelling. Three domains of subsidence were found: on the continental shelf and slope, subsidence corresponds to a seaward tilting with different amplitudes, whereas the... |

The Western Mediterranean basin has been formed by Miocene back-arc extension and is underlain by a thin and young lithosphere. This young lithosphere is warm, as testified by an overall elevated offshore heat flow. Heat flow within the Western Mediterranean is, however, highly variable and existing data are unevenly distributed and poorly studied in the central part of the Liguro-Provençal and Algero-Balearic basins. This central part is floored by a young oceanic crust, bordered by different continental margins, cut by transform faults, and filled by up to 8 km of sediments. We present a total of 148 new heat flow data collected during the MedSalt and WestMedFlux cruises in 2015 and 2016 and aligned along seven regional profiles that show an important... |
