Ethical Negotiation Tactics Among Students at Land Grant Universities AgEcon
Perry, Gregory M.; Duffy, Patricia A.; Nixon, Clair J.; Robison, Lindon J..
Study uses a 16-question negotiation ethics survey to examine ethical attitudes among undergraduates at Oregon State, Auburn, Michigan State and Texas A&M Universities. About 600 students were surveyed. The results revealed that gender, age, religious activity and community service were major factors influencing ethical behavior. Family income, size of hometown, and most high school activities had virtually no influence on ethical behavior.

ANALYZING TENURE ARRANGEMENTS AND CROP ROTATIONS USING FARM SIMULATION AND PROBIT ANALYSIS AgEcon
Perry, Gregory M.; Rister, M. Edward; Richardson, James W.; Grant, Warren R..
Whole farm simulation analysis and econometric techniques are employed in an analysis of crop rotations and tenure arrangement strategies. The FLIPSIM model is used to analyze a representative Texas Upper Gulf Coast rice and soybean farm. Probit analysis is then used to determine the impact of net cash farm income, land tenure, and crop rotation on probability of survival. Results suggest that, although the simulation model is useful in providing information on the effect at the farm level of following the different strategies, probit results provide greater understanding into the returns and risk inherent to each strategy.

Taxes, Tax Subsidies and the Impact of Trade Agreements AgEcon
Perry, Gregory M..
Tax subsidies are an often overlooked method by which government subsidises agriculture. An examination of tax policies in Australia, Canada, Germany and the United States reveals several different tax subsidies provided to farmers in these countries. Most of these subsidies are in theory subject to reduction under GATT. For various reasons, however, most tax subsidies are not included in subsidy measures. Failure to include these kinds of subsidies in AMS measures could encourage their proliferation among countries desiring to continue agricultural subsidies.

An Exploration of Factors Influencing Ethical and Unethical Behavior in Negotiations AgEcon
Perry, Gregory M.; Duffy, Patricia A.; Nixon, Clair J.; Robison, Lindon J..
The issue of ethics has received little notice in agricultural economics journals. This study utilized a survey technique to reveal the ethical attitudes among some 500 students at four Land Grant Universities. The data were analyzed using multiple regression techniques. Individuals negotiating with strangers were more willing to use questionable ethical tactics. Women, individuals who were cooperative rather than competitive in negotiation situations, and those who regularly attended religious services wer consistantly less willing to use questionable ethics in negotiation. The size of the individual's hometown and family income had no clear impact on ethical attidutes in regotiations.

AGRICULTURE TO INSTREAM WATER TRANSFERS UNDER UNCERTAIN WATER AVAILABILITY: A CASE STUDY OF THE DESCHUTES RIVER, OREGON AgEcon
Turner, Brenda; Perry, Gregory M..
Prior appropriations of river flows (primarily to agriculture) have greatly reduced flow in many Oregon streams, causing major changes in stream ecosystems. This study focuses on trade-offs between instream and agricultural uses for the two largest irrigation districts in Oregon’'s Deschutes River basin. Both short- and long-term water lease strategies are examined, as are requirements now in place that water leases be accompanied by fallowing land formerly served by the leased water. The low-cost strategies combine canal lining with reductions in farmer’'s per acre water use. Short-term leases are less costly than long-term leases

HOW MUCH DO FARMERS PAY IN TAXES? AgEcon
Perry, Gregory M.; Nixon, Clair J..
A variety of federal, state, and local taxes are levied on farming operations in the United States. To date, there has been no attempt to systematically estimate what the total tax burden is on U.S. farms and how that burden varies from state to state. Based on the results of this analysis, the total farmer tax burden in 1994 was estimated at nearly $17 billion, most of which was in the form of real property tax (44%) and federal personal income tax (26%).

EXPLORING THE ROLE OF MENTORING IN AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS PH.D. TRAINING AgEcon
Perry, Gregory M..
Mentoring is used in many fields to prepare graduate students for a professional career. This study focuses on mentoring of Ph.D. students in agricultural economics, including the effects of mentoring on expected research output and students’' satisfaction with time spent with their major professor. The sink-or-swim mentoring method seems to create the most discord among students and also negatively influences expected research output. The student’s' gender and citizenship seem to also impact expected output.

INCORPORATING GOVERNMENT PROGRAM PROVISIONS INTO A MEAN-VARIANCE FRAMEWORK AgEcon
Perry, Gregory M.; Rister, M. Edward; Richardson, James W.; Bessler, David A..
E-V studies traditionally have relied on historical data to calculate returns and variance. Historical data may not fully reflect current conditions, particularly when decisions involve government-supported crops. This paper presents a method for calculating mean and variance using subjectively-estimated data. The method is developed for both government-supported and non-program crops. Comparisons to alternative methods suggest the approach provides reasonable accuracy.
