Phylogenetic relationships of the family Tarumaniidae (Characiformes) based on nuclear and mitochondrial data Neotropical Ichthyology
Arcila,Dahiana; Petry,Paulo; Ortí,Guillermo.
ABSTRACT Characiformes is an order of freshwater fishes that includes many commercially important and emblematic species from South America and Africa, such as the popular piranhas, hatchetfishes, African tiger fishes and tetras. The order is split into two suborders with a total of 24 families, 282 genera and ca. 2,100 species. Here, we present an expanded phylogeny of characiform fishes, including data for 520 species and three genes (12S, 16S and RAG1), and the recently described family Tarumaniidae, which has not been examined by previous molecular analysis. Although our genetic coverage is limited to three gene fragments, the tree inferred based on maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference supports the monophyly of all characiform families and is...

Harttia merevari, a new species of catfish (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from Venezuela Neotropical Ichthyology
Provenzano R.,Francisco; Machado-Allison,Antonio; Chernoff,Barry; Willink,Phil; Petry,Paulo.
Harttia merevari, a new species of loricariid catfish, is described from eight specimens captured in the upper Caura River, Orinoco River basin, Venezuela. The new species is recognized by the following combination of characters: abdomen naked; two or three preanal plates; a bony plate before each branchial opening; seven lateral plates between the pectoral and pelvic fins; maxillary barbel short and attached to the oral disk by a fleshy fold; head dorsal surface and anterior portion of the body light or dark yellow with numerous, round black spots; posterior region of the body light or dark yellow with five black transverse bands, dorsal central area of the two anterior bands diffused. The discovery of this new species extends the distribution of the...

New species of Metynnis Cope, 1878 (Characiformes: Characidae) from the rio Paraguay basin, Mato Grosso State, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Pavanelli,Carla S.; Ota,Rafaela P.; Petry,Paulo.
A new species of Metynnis is described from the rio Cuiabá and rio Manso drainages, in the upper rio Paraguay basin, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. This laterally compressed species, which rarely exceeds 140 mm in SL, is readily distinguished from other members of the genus Metynnis by having 100-110 lateral-line scales, 48-56 rows of scales above the lateral line, 32-36 circumpeduncular scales, 22-24 gill rakers, 38 vertebrae, singular color pattern, and relatively smaller snout, width, and head length.

Comments on the type status of Laemolyta (Characiformes: Anostomidae) specimens described by Garman, 1890 and Borodin, 1931 Neotropical Ichthyology
Petry,Paulo; Mautari,Kelly; Menezes,Naércio A.; Hartel,Karsten.
The type status of the specimens of the genus Laemolyta described by S. Garman and N. Borodin are reviewed. The species involved were described as Anostomus varius nitens Garman, 1890, A. varius Garman, 1890, A. proximus Garman, 1890, and A. garmani Borodin, 1931. Several lots were subsequently erroneously designated as types and their status are corrected.

Using community phylogenetics to assess phylogenetic structure in the Fitzcarrald region of Western Amazonia Neotropical Ichthyology
Craig,Jack M.; Carvalho,Tiago P.; Chakrabarty,Prosanta; Derouen,Valerie; Ortega,Hernán; Petry,Paulo; Reis,Roberto E.; Tagliacollo,Victor A.; Albert,James S..
ABSTRACT Here we explore the use of community phylogenetics as a tool to document patterns of biodiversity in the Fitzcarrald region, a remote area in Southwestern Amazonia. For these analyses, we subdivide the region into basin-wide assemblages encompassing the headwaters of four Amazonian tributaries (Urubamba, Yuruá, Purús and Las Piedras basins), and habitat types: river channels, terra firme (non-floodplain) streams, and floodplain lakes. We present a robust, well-documented collection of fishes from the region including 272 species collected from 132 field sites over 63 field days and four years, comprising the most extensive collection of fishes from this region to date. We conduct a preliminary community phylogenetic analysis based on this...
