LEAST SQUARES AND ENTROPY AS PENALTY FUNCTIONS AgEcon
Preckel, Paul V..
Mathematical measures of entropy as defined by Shannon (1948) and Kullback and Leibler (1951) are currently in vogue in the field of econometrics, primarily due to the comprehensive work by Golan, Judge, and Miller (1996). In this paper, an alternative interpretation of the entropy measure as a penalty function over deviations is presented. Using this interpretation, a number of parallels are drawn with least squares estimators, and it is demonstrated that, with a minor modification of the traditional least squares estimator, both approaches may be applied to the general linear model. The advantages and disadvantages of each approach are discussed, and a philosophical approach to the selection of estimation technique is suggested.

THE ECONOMICS OF REFUGE DESIGN FOR BT CORN AgEcon
Hyde, Jeffrey; Martin, Marshall A.; Preckel, Paul V.; Dobbins, Craig L.; Edwards, C. Richard.
Planting Bt corn on large areas may lead to European corn borer (ECB) resistance to Bt. Scientists recommend planting a non-Bt corn refuge as part of a resistance management strategy. Different refuge configurations may impact farm profits differently. This paper analyzes the economics of alternative refuge configurations in Indiana.

ROBUSTNESS OF NON-PARAMETRIC MEASUREMENT OF EFFICIENCY AND RISK AVERSION AgEcon
Settlage, Daniel M.; Preckel, Paul V..
This paper examines the performance of a risk-adjusted non-parametric approach to measuring efficiency and risk aversion. Prior work is extended to the case where agent behavior is motivated by expected utility maximization. Results indicate the approach significantly outperforms traditional efficiency measurement methods when applied to risk averse agents.

Productivity Growth and Convergence in Crop, Ruminant and Non-Ruminant Production: Measurement and Forecasts AgEcon
Ludena, Carlos E.; Hertel, Thomas W.; Preckel, Paul V.; Foster, Kenneth A.; Nin Pratt, Alejandro.
There is considerable interest in projections of future productivity growth in agriculture. Whether one is interested in the outlook for global commodity markets, future patterns of international trade, or the interactions between land use, deforestation and ecological diversity, the rate of productivity growth in agriculture is an essential input. Yet solid projections for this variable have proven elusive – particularly on a global basis. This is due, in no small part, to the difficulty in measuring historical productivity growth. The purpose of this paper is to report the latest time series evidence on total factor productivity growth for crops, ruminants and non-ruminant livestock, on a global basis. We then follow with tests for convergence amongst...

ECONOMIC REPLACEMENT OF A HETEROGENEOUS HERD AgEcon
Boys, Kathryn A.; Li, Ning; Preckel, Paul V.; Schinckel, Allan P.; Foster, Kenneth A..
A model was developed and used to determine the optimal slaughter weights of pigs with heterogeneous growth raised in a 1,000 head barn and marketed in truckload groups. Explicitly recognizing the heterogeneity of pig weights and marketing the herd over time in truckload batches can substantially increase profit.

ESTIMATING THE VALUE OF BT CORN: A MULTI-STATE COMPARISON AgEcon
Hyde, Jeffrey; Martin, Marshall A.; Preckel, Paul V.; Edwards, C. Richard; Dobbins, Craig L..
Bt corn offers a powerful tool to control European corn borers and some other pests. Because pest infestations and farming practices differ across the Corn Belt, economic benefits also differ. This research estimates the value of Bt corn across the Corn Belt. Results identify areas where Bt adoption is economically justified.

The Value of Bt Corn in Southwest Kansas: A Monte Carlo Simulation Approach AgEcon
Hyde, Jeffrey; Martin, Marshall A.; Preckel, Paul V.; Buschman, Lawrent L.; Edwards, C. Richard; Sloderbeck, Phillip E.; Higgins, Randall A..
While most Corn Belt farmers consider planting Bt corn to control European corn borer, southwestern Kansas farmers must also take into account an array of other insect pests, including corn rootworm, spider mites, and southwestern corn borer. This research uses a decision analysis framework to estimate the expected economic value of Bt corn in southwest Kansas. Mean per acre Bt values ranged from $12.49 to $34.60, well above the technology fee assumed to be $14 per unit, or $5.25 per acre at a seeding rate of 30,000 seeds per acre. The minimum value over all scenarios was $8.69 per acre. Using Monte Carlo simulation, it was shown that European and southwestern corn borer infestation probabilities, expected corn price, and expected pest-free yields are...

TRADE POLICY, FOOD PRICE VARIABILITY, AND THE VULNERABILITY OF LOW-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS AgEcon
Hertel, Thomas W.; Preckel, Paul V.; Reimer, Jeffrey J..
We utilize a global trade model to generate distributions of commodity and factor prices based on observed uncertainty in rice production. This is done for three trade policy regimes. We then assess their impact on domestic price variability and the likelihood of marginal households falling into poverty in four countries.

NUTRITION AND THE ECONOMICS OF SWINE MANAGEMENT AgEcon
Boland, Michael A.; Foster, Kenneth A.; Preckel, Paul V..
Current methods of formulating animal rations lead to excess nutrient excretion which can potentially lead to excess manure nutrients and an increase in economic costs. These methods do not recognize the impact of diminishing returns. The objective is to simultaneously optimize feed ration composition and replacement. The results, when compared against results from a survey of feed companies, indicate that using a profit maximization rather than live weight growth maximization criterion targets nutrients to an animal's actual needs and, hence, fewer nutrients are excreted and higher returns for producers are obtained.

IMPLICIT ADDITIVE PREFERENCES: A FURTHER GENERALIZATION OF THE CES AgEcon
Preckel, Paul V.; Cranfield, John A.L.; Hertel, Thomas W..
The CES is generalized by extension of the work of Hanoch (1975) resulting in implicit, direct and indirect relationships between utility and consumption. Expressions for substitution and income elasticities are developed and observed to be variable, rather than constant as in the CES case.

IMPACTS OF GROWTH STIMULANTS IN THE DOMESTIC LIVESTOCK SECTOR AgEcon
Peterson, Everett B.; Preckel, Paul V.; Hertel, Thomas W.; McGuirk, Anya M..
Many individuals are predicting a "second green revolution" in agriculture from the introduction of growth stimulants into the livestock industries. An economy-wide approach is used to determine the affects on prices and quantities of introducing growth stimulants in the domestic dairy and pork industries. In general, the impacts are found to be much smaller than previous research focused at the sectoral level has suggested. Increases in the amount of lean meat per hog, which reduces processor demand, may actually lead to a reduction in pork production at the farm-level.

ENTROPY-BASED SEEMINGLY UNRELATED REGRESSION AgEcon
Harmon, Alice; Preckel, Paul V.; Eales, James S..
We adapt the classical SUR procedure to a minimum cross entropy approach to estimate linear systems of equations where the errors across equations are correlated. We conclude that our entropy-based approach may provide a reasonable substitute for SUR in cases where classical methods may not be applied due to shortages of data.

Mitigating the Compliance Cost of a Phosphorus-Based Swine Manure Management Policy AgEcon
Yap, Crystal; Foster, Kenneth A.; Preckel, Paul V.; Doering, Otto C., III; Richert, Brian T..
Regulatory changes by federal and state agencies portend a switch from nitrogen-based livestock manure disposal policies to phosphorus-based policies. This paper estimates the compliance costs of such a policy change for a hypothetical hog-grain farm in North Central Indiana. The farm includes 1,500 acres of cropland and has the capacity to raise 11,970 grow-finish hogs annually. The farm model also as the potential to produce four different crops on six different land types. A nonlinear math-programming model was developed to determine the optimal mix of management activities for a phosphorus-based regulation. The model allows mitigation of compliance costs via the choice between four different pig diets, three alternative methods of manure disposal,...

A Comparison of RAS and Entropy Methods in Updating IO Tables AgEcon
Ahmed, Syud Amer; Preckel, Paul V..
Since the first half of the 20th century, the input-output (IO) table has been the backbone of much empirical work used to support policy analysis and develop economy-wide models. The need for accurate, up-to-date IO tables is thus essential for establishing the validity of the empirical work that follows from them. However, the construction of an IO table for any given country is an expensive and time-consuming endeavor. Current and accurate IO tables for many countries are thus often difficult to obtain on a regular basis. Once an initial IO table has been constructed, a common workaround is to collect partial information for subsequent periods, such as final demands for commodities within the economy, and then employ a Bayesian parameter estimation...

POVERTY IMPACTS OF MULTILATERAL TRADE LIBERALIZATION AgEcon
Hertel, Thomas W.; Preckel, Paul V.; Cranfield, John A.L.; Ivanic, Maros.
Poverty reduction is an increasingly important consideration in the deliberations over multilateral trade liberalization. However, the analytical procedures used to assess the impacts of multilateral trade liberalization on poverty are rudimentary, at best. Most poverty studies have focused on a single country using detailed household survey data. When it comes to multi-country, global trade liberalization analyses, researchers are forced to resort to a discussion of average, or per capita effects, suggesting that if per capita real income rises, then poverty will fall. As we show in this paper, such an inference can be misleading. Our paper combines results from a newly available international, cross-section consumption analysis for 1996, with earnings...
