ABSTRACT In this study we describe and illustrate pollen and spores that have been identified as significant in modern and fossil samples from the campos region of Uruguay. We provide new information about modern pollen assemblages and their relationship to the vegetation types of this region. We discuss the taxonomic limitations of pollen and spores and their representation in both modern and fossil samples. We highlight the importance of identifying both silent and key indicator taxa for making accurate paleoecological interpretations. Se reconstruyeron los cambios de las comunidades vegetales de las llanuras costeras del este de la provincia de Buenos Aires durante el Holoceno a partir de la comparación de registros palinológicos provenientes de dos testigos datados ubicados al norte (T9-1, 36° 45' S; 56° 37' O) y al sur (La Lagunita, 37° 43' S; 57° 21' O) de la Paleopunta Villa Gesell. Entre 5.400 y 3.300 14C años A.P. los registros palinológicos sugieren el desarrollo de mosaicos de comunidades halófitas-psammófitas semejantes en ambos sitios sobre llanuras de mareas relacionadas con la progradación simultánea de barreras litorales hacia el norte y hacia el sur de la Paleopunta Villa Gesell durante un periodo de estabilidad del nivel del mar durante el evento regresivo. The sedimentary deposits exposed in cutbanks along the Luján River are considered to be the late Quaternary type locality for geological and paleontological studies of the northeastern Pampas of Argentina. The stratigraphic nomenclatures and sequences proposed for over a century have been used to correlate with sedimentary successions from other regions of Argentina, north of Uruguay and south of Brazil.
