Determinants of Price Differentials in Oklahoma Value-Added Feeder Cattle Auctions AgEcon
Williams, Galen S.; Raper, Kellie Curry; DeVuyst, Eric A.; Peel, Derrell S.; McKinney, Doug.
Many value-added practices cannot be observed by feeder cattle buyers. Third-party verification can decrease market inefficiency associated with this asymmetric information. We evaluate the effectiveness of a verification program, the Oklahoma Quality Beef Network, in increasing received prices. We estimate the value of verification, weaning, vaccinating, certification and phenotypic traits of feeder cattle at Oklahoma auctions. Results indicate that the OQBN program adds $2.39 to $5.74/cwt. Vaccinating calves adds $1.44/cwt, and weaning calves adds $2.05/cwt. Differential values for lot size, average weight, hide color, frame size, conditioning, Brahman influence, gender and other characteristics are also reported.

Influence of Beginning Body Condition Scores on Net Returns From Feeding Cull Cows AgEcon
Amadou, Zakou; Raper, Kellie Curry; Biermacher, Jon T.; Cook, Billy; Ward, Clement E..
The impact of beginning body condition scores on returns from feeding cull cows was investigated in a two year experiment. In each of two culling years, physical performance data and financial data were measured at approximately monthly intervals for culls on pasture versus dry lot. Specifically, data was collected for cows culled in October 2007 and held through April 2008 and for cows culled in October 2008 and held through March 2009. We examine the sensitivity of net returns relative to the choice of body condition score as a sorting trigger for heavy versus thin cows. In this two year study, while a pasture system was generally more profitable than a drylot system, thin cows were typically more profitable than cows with higher BCS, regardless of the...

Demographic Factors Affecting the Adoption of Multiple Value-Added Practices by Oklahoma Cow-Calf Producers AgEcon
Williams, Brian R.; Raper, Kellie Curry; DeVuyst, Eric A.; Peel, Derrell S.; Lalman, David L.; Richards, Chris; Doye, Damona G..
The utilization of marketing programs to enhance feeder calf value has been met with modest success in Oklahoma. Value-added programs are continually promoted as avenues for improving cow-calf profitability, but producer adoption of value-added practices lags in spite of research showing the value of these practices. Identifying producer characteristics that increase their likelihood to adopt value-added practices is critical to developing successful outreach efforts. Results from a survey of Oklahoma producers on value-added practice adoption indicate that multiple demographic variables influence a producer’s likelihood of practice adoption. For Extension specialists, results can help in targeting likely adopters and developing methods to overcome...

Determining Key Factors of Influence on the Profitability of Retaining Cull Cows Beyond Culling AgEcon
Amadou, Zakou; Raper, Kellie Curry; Ward, Clement E.; Biermacher, Jon T.; Cook, Billy.
Factors influencing the profitability of retaining and feeding cull cows beyond culling were investigated. First, a price response function is estimated using 19 years of monthly price data as reported by Agricultural Market Services (AMS). Net returns are then estimated using data from a three year cull cow feeding experiment conducted at The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation and used to examine the relative effect of various factors on net returns. Results showed the importance of average daily gain increases across feeding periods while feeding system is also an important contributing factor to net returns.

NONSTRUCTURAL AND STATISTICAL NONPARAMETRIC MARKET POWER TESTS: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION AgEcon
Noelke, Corinna M.; Raper, Kellie Curry.
We use Monte Carlo experiments to assess the accuracy of two nonstructural and two statistical nonparametric market power tests. We implement these monopoly and monopsony market power tests using data from ten known market structures. The objective is to determine which test is most able to distinguish between market structures. The statistical nonparametric market power tests appear to be promising.

DETERMINISTIC NONPARAMETRIC MARKET POWER TESTS: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION AgEcon
Raper, Kellie Curry; Noelke, Corinna M..
A review of recent literature reflects the development of several deterministic nonparametric market power tests. We use Monte Carlo experiments to evaluate the veracity of four monopolistic and four monopsonistic market power tests that use the deterministic nonparametric approach. The experiments are implemented using data from ten known market structures. When results are compared to Raper, Love, and Shumway's (1999) findings concerning parametric market power tests in the Bresnahan-Lau tradition, we find that the parametric tests perform well while only two of the nonparametric tests appear able to identify market power.

CYCLICAL CONCENTRATION AND CONSOLIDATION IN BIOTECH R&D: A NEO-SCHUMPETERIAN MODEL AgEcon
Oehmke, James F.; Wolf, Christopher A.; Weatherspoon, Dave D.; Naseem, Anwar; Maredia, Mywish K.; Raper, Kellie Curry; Hightower, Amie L..
Over the past fifteen years, the agricultural biotechnology industry has exhibited cyclical behavior in concentration and consolidation. This paper provides a theoretical model of endogenous R&D, in which industry concentration exhibits cyclical behavior. The model also generates additional testable hypotheses, and policy implications.

Commodity-Procurement Strategies of Food Companies: A Case Study AgEcon
Jones, Kraig M.; Raper, Kellie Curry; Whipple, Judith M.; Mollenkopf, Diane A.; Peterson, H. Christopher.
This research evaluates the main characteristics considered in commodity-procurement decisions made by food manufacturers. Procurement characteristics are examined and a framework is developed which classifies procurement characteristics into three categories: product constraints, company constraints, and service constraints. A case-study approach is used to determine the importance of various procurement characteristics and their impact on the buyer’s procurement-mechanism choice. The research also examines the strategic role that a commodity-procurement department plays within a corporation and how that role relates to the three commodity-procurement decision classifications.

Regional Wholesale Price Relationships in the Presence of Counter-Seasonal Imports AgEcon
Raper, Kellie Curry; Thornsbury, Suzanne; Aguilar, Cristobal.
Counter-seasonal imports of fresh produce facilitate year-round availability in the U.S. and may impact the seasonal structure of market price relationships. Vector autoregression analysis is used to determine the nature and extent of spatial price relationships among four geographically distinct regions in the U.S. fresh peach wholesale market. We evaluate differences in regional spatial price relationships and find statistical evidence that price relationships among regions are different in periods dominated by regional domestic supplies imports compared with periods when counter-seasonal imports dominate the market.

Perceptions of Vertical Marketing Arrangement Performance: Cow/calf Producers versus Multiple Production Level Producers AgEcon
Raper, Kellie Curry; Black, J. Roy; Hilker, James H..
This study seeks to understand whether beef operators who specialize in cow-calf production exhibit different motives for alliance participation and different levels of satisfaction with these vertical marketing arrangements than their counterparts in cow-calf production who also operate upstream or downstream beef enterprises. Survey results indicate that there are differences among producer groups, particularly with respect to information access and interpretation and pooling cattle.

Factors Affecting Adoption of Recommended Management Practices in Stocker Cattle Production AgEcon
Johnson, Rachel J.; Doye, Damona G.; Lalman, David L.; Peel, Derrell S.; Raper, Kellie Curry; Chung, Chanjin.
Binary logit regression models were used to estimate factors affecting adoption of recommended management practices. Variables analyzed include aspects of farm structure, human capital, farm objectives, and production system employed by the producer. Results reveal that operation size and dependency upon income from the stocker operation, in particular, influence the adoption of recommended practices. Older producers and those pursuing a year-round production strategy were found to lag in adoption.

PARAMETRIC AND NONPARAMETRIC MARKET POWER TESTS: AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION AgEcon
Noelke, Corinna M.; Raper, Kellie Curry.
Parametric and nonparametric market power tests most commonly used to assess imperfectly competitive behavior are identified. Monte Carlo experiments are used to assess the accuracy of eight nonparametric tests. The results are compared to Raper, Love, and Shumway's (1997) findings concerning three parametric market power tests in the Bresnahan-Lau tradition. Both monopolistic and monopsonistic market power tests are implemented using data from 10 known market structures. Only two of the nonparametric market power tests distinguish between market structures adequately. The parametric tests perform well, although functional form bias is not investigated in this study.

ESTIMATING IMPORT DEMAND IN THE MEXICAN CHEESE MARKET AgEcon
Ramirez, Miguel A.; Jones, Kraig M.; Arellano-Vaca, Juan Francisco; Raper, Kellie Curry.
Mexico is the fastest growing market for US dairy exports and it is the largest market for U.S. cheese. The U.S. has always enjoyed a large share of the Mexican cheese market. However, its share growth has been less dynamic than the share of Europe, Oceania and other countries, despite advantages in proximity, shipping costs, and delivery times. We use an Almost Ideal Demand System to estimate own and cross-price elasticities in the Mexican cheese import market to assess the comparative position of the U.S. relative to other cheese market participants.

Economic Effects of Bovine Respiratory Disease on Feedlot Cattle during Backgrounding and Finishing Phases AgEcon
Brooks, Kathleen R.; Raper, Kellie Curry; Ward, Clement E.; Holland, Ben P.; Krehbiel, Clint.
This research examines the economic effects of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) on backgrounding and finishing phases of cattle production. This research measures the effectiveness of using serum haptoglobin (Hp) concentration to predict BRD occurrence and the impact of multiple treatments for BRD infection on cattle performance and returns. During the backgrounding phase, 222 heifers were grouped by Hp level. After the backgrounding phase, 193 heifers were then grouped by number of BRD treatments in the finishing phase. Net returns decreased in the backgrounding phase and the combined phases as the number of BRD treatments increased. Hp concentrations had no significant effects on net returns.
