Effective relationship among partners is a key in strengthening collaborative marketing efforts. One of the collaborative marketing efforts is through clustering of farmer to link into market. This study examined the level of relationship of vegetable cluster farmers with their market intermediaries - cluster and the downstream buyers. A total of 81 vegetables farmers in Southern Philippines were surveyed to determine their relationship level on trust, power-dependence, relationship-specific investments and satisfaction. Comparison between clusters and downstream buyers were made using ANOVA and Welch Test. The study found that farmers have high level of trust to their clusters compared to their downstream buyers. The high level of trust is attributed to... |

Poverty reduction has been an underlying goal of governments and the development community since the Second World War, but it was the 1973 Nairobi address of Robert S. McNamara, then President of the World Bank, that created a new commitment to directly address poverty reduction in the quest for development (McNamara 1973). More than half a century after the war and close to 30 years after Robert McNamara’s speech, poverty is still rampant in many parts of the globe. Reflections on why this scourge remains, and what we as agricultural economists can do about it, were the driving forces behind our paper with the late John L. Dillon entitled ‘Agricultural economists and world poverty: progress and prospects’ (Rola-Rubzen et al. 2001). The part of our paper... |

Various approaches have been used to improve smallholder farmers’ livelihood systems. One approach is to build farmer capacity with a view of improving their knowledge and skills. In Western Leyte, Philippines, researchers worked with farmers in improving farmers’ knowledge base in technical and economic aspects of their farming system. With a focus on improving profits, farmers were equipped with a range of tools to enable them to improve their farming system and to assess possible changes in their system. |

The Australian desert economy is a $90 billion dollar economy. However currently, there is a reliance on a few industry sectors in delivering its output. About 60% of the gross revenue of the desert comes from only three sectors - mining, manufacturing and agriculture. This can pose a risk in light of climate change, increasing interconnectedness of financial markets and the fact that the resources boom is unlikely to be an on-going phenomenon. How can desert economies mitigate risks associated with over-reliance on a few select sectors and ensure continued growth in the long run? This paper discusses the structure of the desert economy and strategies to mitigate the risks of overdependence on a few industries. Using a regional input-output model, the... |

Out migration from rural areas is increasingly becoming a strategy to get out of poverty. While rice–based agriculture remains to be the backbone in Southeast Asia, majority of the farming households particularly those who produce rice under rainfed conditions remain poor and insecure. This paper examines the relationship between migration and other socio-economic factors on household income using data from 1,874 rice sample farming households in Vietnam (north and south), Thailand (northeast) and Philippines (Luzon island). In the Philippines, remittances contribute about 60 per cent of household income of recipient families. In Thailand and Vietnam, these constitute about 40 per cent of total household income. International migration is most prevalent in... |

Special problems are presented when analysing supply chains because of the complexity of the relationships. In addressing this problem for a vegetable supply chain in Mindanao a pluralistic methodology is used. A soft systems framework was used to structure and analyse the problem and identify relevant systems. Issues we are addressing are efficiencies along the supply chain (including input supply issues, output marketing, quality control and transport) and relationships between the various participants in the supply chain. Qualitative and quantitative data collection methods have been used. Analysis is being conducted with qualitative data analysis techniques, LP farm household models, transaction cost economics, gap analysis, factor analysis and... |

New development paradigms come and go, seemingly with increasing rapidity, yet poverty remains the scourge of the developing nations. As we enter the new millennium, we fear that still more development fads and fancies will emerge, to be taken up and then dropped by the development community. These swings in fashion bring with them the danger that the ‘basics’ of effective development strategies for poverty reduction will be neglected. In this article, we advance some personal and perhaps controversial views about the virtues of getting agriculture moving as a means of reducing poverty, and about the role that agricultural economists can and should play in that endeavour. |
