Monosaccharide composition of suspended organic particulate matter in relation to its origin ArchiMer
Compiano, Am; Romano, Jc; Delagiraudiere, I; Laborde, P.
Samples of phytoplankton cultures and of suspended particulate matter from continental, brackish and marine waters were examined by HPLC for the monosaccharide content of their hydrolysable sugar fraction. Eight monosaccharides were currently assayed and their weight compared to HPLC-assayed chlorophyll a concentrations. With the exception of oligotrophic waters, these two variables are well correlated in the various prospected environments. Glucose was always the strongly dominant form, not only in fresh and brackish waters but also in marine samples with high phytoplanktonic biomass. If samples are compared on a salinity basis, only four monosaccharides showed significant differences in their relative concentrations, as a consequence of sampling...

Caractéristiques du feutrage algal des récifs coralliens de Polynésie française soumis à différentes intensités de bioérosion ArchiMer
Le Bris, S; Le Campion-alsumard, T; Romano, Jc.
This study deals with the colonisation of experimental Porites blocks by epilithic and endolithic algal community in two atoll lagoons and two high-island lagoons in French Polynesia, exposed to different environmental conditions during a 5-year period. A qualitative analysis of the community (cyanobacteria and micro-algae) was carried out, and the relationship between the epilithic and endolithic strata observed. HPLC analysis of chlorophyll pigments was used to quantitatively determine the plant biomass, which was then compared to that of the algal turf of neighbouring reefs. The results show that these blocks are colonised according to two factors: the reef structure (atoll or high-island) and the degree of human disturbance. The epilithic and...

Seasonal and interannual variations (1996-2000) of the coastal waters east of the Rhone river mouth as indicated by the SORCOM series ArchiMer
Younes, Wan; Bensoussan, N; Romano, Jc; Arlhac, D; Lafont, Maxime.
Between 1996 and 2000, 79 cruises have been achieved following always the same transect between Marseilles and the Rhone river's mouth. While cruising, salinity, temperature and fluorescence of surface waters (1.5 m) were recorded every minute, in association with precise GPS position. The whole set of data. (i.e. 128 measured points per cruise) constitutes the Sorcom series whose synthetic results ate presented here. Despite the high spatial and temporal. variability encountered between two successive cruises, the regularity and duration of the sampling strategy permitted to define coherent spatial zonation and temporal evolutions. In the Cape Couronne vicinity the dynamic of the eastern extension of the dilution plume clearly changes. Westward, waters...

Cycle annuel du peuplement macrobenthique du port d'Alger ArchiMer
Rebzanizahaf, C; Bellan, G; Bakalem, A; Romano, Jc.
The impact of pollution on the macrobenthos was studied through a seasonal cycle by analysis of samples taken at 34 stations in the different basins of Algiers harbour (Mustapha, Agha and Vieux Port). Physical and chemical characteristics were measured in the water column (temperature, salinity, seston, dissolved oxygen) and sediment (pH). The faunistic composition of the stations was assessed according to the ecological significance of species or groups of species as determinants of pollution. There were close correlations between the physical and chemical characteristics at che stations and the spatial distribution of species and species assemblages. Seasonal variation in populations was most marked in Mustapha basin, less noticeable in Agha and weak in...

Le néphéloïde benthique au large du Rhône. Transferts particulaires à l'interface continent-océan ArchiMer
Naudin, Jj; Cauwet, G; Leveau, M; Lochet, F; Pauc, H; Romano, Jc; Sempere, R.
Particulate matter from the bottom nepheloid layer, off the Rhone river mouth was sampled with a newly-designed frame code-named SYMPHY. Several spreading phases of the Rhodanian suspensions on the continental shelf were evidenced by currentmeter records, particulate matter analyses, CTD and nephelometric measurements. These data permitted the study of the mechanisms which control the aging of the suspensions during their transfer to a sea with very small amplitude tides. The bottom nepheloid layer can be defined as a vertical concentration gradient resulting from an equilibrium between the horizontal (Rhodanian inputs) and the vertical (surface nepheloid layer) components of the particulate flux. The variability of this equilibrium, controlled by...
