Implementation Action Plan for organic food and farming research Organic Eprints
Padel, Susanne; Niggli, Urs; Pearce, Bruce; Schlüter, Marco; Schmid, Otto; Cuoco, Eduardo; Willer, Helga; Huber, Machteld; Halberg, Niels; Micheloni, Cristina.
The Implementation Action Plan completes TP Organics’ trilogy of key documents of the Research Vision to 2025 (Niggli et al 2008) and the Strategic Research Agenda (Schmid et al 2009). The Implementation Action Plan addresses important areas for a successful implementation of the Strategic Research Agenda. It explores the strength of Europe’s organic sector on the world stage with about one quarter of the world’s organic agricultural land in 2008 and accounting for more than half of the global organic market. The aims and objectives of organic farming reflect a broad range of societal demands on the multiple roles of agriculture and food production of not only producing commodities but also ecosystem services. These are important for Europe’s economic...

Quality and safety aspects of organic and low-input food processing: Results of a Delphi survey from an expert consultation in 13 European countries Organic Eprints
Kretzschmar, Ursula; Schmid, Otto.
Organic food-processing standards generally prohibit the use of synthetic chemicals, many preservatives and other food additives that are widely used in the processing of conventional foods. However, there are frequent discussions about the underlying rationales, principles and criteria used to allow some processing methods and additives but other ones not. Consumers of low-input and organic food have specific expectations regarding quality characteristics of processed food. Organic processed products should therefore be sustainable and fulfil consumers’ expectations as much as possible. Our study reviewed current approaches and concepts in organic food processing, based on the results of a literature survey and a two-step Delphi expert survey focusing on...

Vizija za raziskovalni program za ekoživila in ekološko kmetijstvo do leta 2025 Organic Eprints
Niggli, Urs; Slabe, Anamarija; Schmid, Otto; Halberg, Niels; Schlüter, Marco.
The TP Organics Vision Research Agenda was prepared between June 2007 and July 2008 on the basis of wide-ranging discussions with farmers’ organizations, scientists, organic traders and retailers, and EU-wide umbrella organizations representing a variety of commercial, non-commercial and civil interests. Up to now, research projects and national framework programmes on organic agriculture have addressed immediate technology gaps in organic agriculture and food production. This Vision has been politically expedient and has given rise to a greater number of producers and professional skills for the task of serving unexpectedly fast growing consumer driven markets. Thus, many organic research projects had a short term perspective only. In contrast to this,...

Analysis of regulatory framework and standards applied to organic wine-making in Europe Organic Eprints
Jonis, Monique; Monnier, Marie Christine; Micheloni, Cristina; Schmid, Otto; Hoffman, Uwe.
Because wines (of grapes) were excluded from the scope of EC Regulation 2092/91 (annex 6, concerning processing organic food, does not apply to wine) concerning organic farming, up till now there is no legal definition for organic wines at European level, but only rules for organic grapes production. This project: ORWINE, is aiming to help the UE commission to develop a legislative framework for the transformation of organic grapes into organic wine. This would allow replacing the current definition “wine made from organically grown grapes” by “organic wines”. One of the first tasks of this project is a description of the regulatory framework applied to EU organic wine-making. Legal public and private standards for wine processing are taken in...

The Organic Market in Europe. Overview and Market Access Information for Producers and International Trading Companies. Fourteen Country Examples in the European Free Trade Association and the European Union, with a Special Focus on Switzerland Organic Eprints
Kilcher, Lukas; Willer, Helga; Huber, Beate; Frieden, Claudia; Schmutz, Res; Schmid, Otto.
From the Foreword by Luks Kilcher, FiBL More than thirty-seven million hectares of agricultural land are managed organically by nearly 1.8 million producers. About one-third of the world’s organic land – 13.4 million hectares – is located in emerging markets and markets in transition. Global sales reached 55 billion USD in 2009, more than doubling in value from 25 billion USD in 2003. Europe is after the USA the second largest organic market in the world with a turnover of 26 billion USD in 2009. These figures increase year by year and such facts impressively illustrate the powerful development of the organic production and market all over the world. Behind these figures lie a large number of benefits and impacts, which are the motor for this...

Food, Fairness & Ecology: An organic research agenda for a sustainable future Organic Eprints
Niggli, Urs; Slabe, Anamaija; Schmid, Otto; Halberg, Niels; Schlüter, Marco.
The European Union Group of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM EU Group) and the International Society of Organic Agriculture Research (ISOFAR) are developing a strategic research agenda focussing on ecological intensification, on sustainable rural regions, on high quality food for healthy nutrition and on ethical values of people vis-à-vis technology development in food production. The strategic research agenda (currently in its second draft, Niggli et al., 2008a) invites farmers, processors, traders, NGOs and scientists to debate on how practice and science should co-operate on future innovation. The final goal of the debate is a widely supported technology platform for organic agriculture and beyond.

Tragfähige Zukunftsbilder für den Biolandbau ausgehend von seinen Wurzeln und Werten (Workshop) Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto; Patzel, Nikola; Lindenthal, Thomas.

Research Brief: Analysis of Impact Pathways of Research on Agriculture Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto; Quiédeville, Sylvain; Sterly, Simone; Barjolle, Dominique; Midmore, Peter.
The findings and recommendations presented in this Research Brief are based on six regional case studies, which were performed to develop and test a methodological framework for assessing the impacts of Scientific Research on Agriculture (SRA). The aim was to investigate the complex innovation processes occurring along related impact pathways. The case studies were selected in five countries for their agro-ecological and socio-economic diversity. The methodology developed was based on the Participatory Impact Pathway Analysis(PIPA) and complemented by some additional methods, mainly to adapt the PIPA approach to the requirements of an ex-post impact assessment (using Outcome Harvesting). We also put more emphasis on the role of the actor network,...

Acqua pulita nel lago di Zugo? 25 per cento di aziende biologiche! Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto.

Schmid, Otto.
In the European funded research project FOODLINKS an analysis of 19 cases of Short Food Supply Chains (SFSCs) was carried out. A special focus was on their contribution to health and sustainability, also with a focus on organic supply chains. These potential contributions were identified (based on case analysis and literature): Health & wellbeing: increased consumer knowledge, possibly leading to healthier diets, but not always fully reached. Environmental: minimised use of resources such as fossil fuel or packaging, and/or use of less polluting methods of production (e.g. organic farming); significant variation between SFSCs. Social: better ensuring fairness and trust in many SFSCs; more social inclusion of people; potential to revitalise local...

National status-quo reports on Collective Farmers Marketing Initatives in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Bahrdt, Katja; Sanders, Jürn; Schmid, Otto.
In general, data and scientific information on farmers’ cooperatives are very rare in Switzerland. There is no official statistic that collects the number and types of existing cooperatives in Switzerland. In view of the little information interviews with experts and an internet search has additionally been conducted. Collective actions of farmers have a long tradition in Switzerland. The earliest forms of collective actions in agricultural can be traced back to the management of common land and forest areas in early Germanic times. Like in most other European countries, the cooperative movement emerged in the second half of the 19 th century in Switzerland and experienced a rapid diffusion. Due to the protectionistic agricultural policy and guaranteed...

From principles to decision procedures and criteria - 3 case studies resulting from EU policy oriented research project work: criteria for feed, for food processing and for crop inputs Organic Eprints
Schmid, Otto.
The presentation outlines how to The presentation outlines how to come from principles to decision criteria with 3 case studies (feed, food processing, crop inputs): At least 2 additional steps are necessary to come from very general overarching basic principles to decision criteria: - For the most important areas the relevant (working) principles have to be formulated: => translate subject/area-related (operational) aims as basis for norm setting - Participatory procedure with stakeholder involvemement is important, which needs time - Criteria should be precise enough (clear priority, exclusion criteria, criteria for derogations) – for operators and control bodies
