Species composition of testate amoebae in Lake Monte Alegre, Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil Biological Sciences
Mousinho, Lucas Pessanha; Silva, Mariana Lessa Carneiro da; Arrieira, Rodrigo Leite; Schwind, Leilane Talita Fatoreto.
We aimed to perform the first survey of testate amoebae community composition in Lake Monte Alegre at São Paulo state, and contribute to mitigate the taxonomic impediment regarding the diversity of testate amoebae in Brazil. Samplings were performed in 20 sampling sites within the lake, in the limnetic and littoral regions in April 2015, using a 58 µm-meshplankton net. We identified 20 taxa of testate amoebae belonging to four families: Arcellidae (8 taxa), Centropyxidae (4 taxa), Difflugiidae (7 taxa) and Lesquereusiidae (2 taxa). The littoral region showed the highest number of taxa (n = 20), whereas in the limnetic region 11 taxa were registered. Therefore, our results evidenced the importance of testate amoebae in aquatic systems, and that further...

Rotifer community structure along a stretch under the influence of dams in the Upper Paraná River floodplain Biological Sciences
Mantovano, Tatiane; Arrieira, Rodrigo Leite; Schwind, Leilane Talita Fatoreto; Bonecker, Claudia Costa; Lansac-Tôha, Fábio Amodêo.
The construction of reservoirs imposes substantial impact on freshwater ecosystems and changes the ecological aspects of the lotic system downstream of dams. We hypothesized an increasing dissimilarity between communities in the sampling sites according to increasing distance from the Porto Primavera Dam. In addition, we expect that the rotifer community in the last sampling site will be influenced more by environmental variables related to trophic status. Samplings were conducted under the water surface of ten sites on the Paraná River in August 2013. Environmental variables were also determined. The highest number of taxa belonged to families Brachionidae, Lecanidae and Trichocercidae. The most abundant species was observed to Synchaeta oblonga,...

Geographical spread of the invasive species Kellicottia longispina (Kellicott, 1879) and K. bostoniensis (Rousselet, 1908): A scientometric approach Biological Sciences
Bomfim, Francieli de Fátima; Mantovano, Tatiane; Schwind, Leilane Talita Fatoreto; Palazzo, Fabiana; Bonecker, Claudia Costa; Lansac-Tôha, Fábio Amodêo.
Processes related to biological invasion of inland waters have become a major issue due to the increasing number of cases associated with the potential effects of invasions. Kellicottia bostoniensis and K. longispina are rotifer species originating from North America and have become invasive in several continents. In this sense, this study carried out a scientometric analysis to analyze the geographical distribution and identify patterns of occurrence as well as to fill gaps on the knowledge of these species. The survey was based on articles indexed in databases from 1896 to 2014. There is a greater scientific knowledge of these species in the temperate region, and these are present in many different environments. In Brazil, there is a very small number of...

An annotated checklist of the Arcella (Arcellidae) from littoral zone of Paranoá lake-Brazil, with a pictorial key Biological Sciences
Silva, Mariana Lessa Carneiro da; Rangel, Elisangela Reis; Lansac-Tôha, Fabio Amodêo; Schwind, Leilane Talita Fatoreto; Joko, Ciro Yoshio.
The pictorial key contributes to taxonomic analysis, as it lists the species found in a given environment, and points out the morphological characteristics that differs one specific taxon from the others. Arcellidae Ehrenberg, 1830 is one of the testate amoebae families with highest representativity in terms of richness and abundance, including three genera, that Arcella shows greater dispersion in different types of aquatic biotopes. The zooplankton community in the Paranoá Lake has been extensively studied over the decades. However, there are no studies on testate amoebae in this environment. The study aimed to develop a pictorial key to help in the identification of Arcella in the Paranoá Lake. Samples were taken with plankton net at 13 sites in the...
