The objective of this paper is to analyse the matrix of technological capabilities of the sugar cane industry in Paraná State, showing your characteristic in the ambits of the investments, operation/production, innovation and relationships with the economy. The results of the matrix of technological capabilities show that the fact of not existing great concentrations for technological capabilities, for the advanced level, common in sugar cane industry, it is still derived of the secular subvencionist paradigm that reigned in the section until the nineties. However, the concern with the sectorial survival, mainly in the current deregulation ambient, it is also evidenced in several ambits of the technological capabilities portrayed by some sugar cane mills... |

The study objectifies, by means of a group of indicators, to evaluate the competitiveness of the Brazilian sugar in the international trade. The indicator market-share evidenced its significant importance, considering that Brazil was responsible for 40,61% of the sugar commercialized in the international market in 2005. About the competitiveness front to other countries and other products, the indicator relative advantage in the export also discloses the advantage competitive of the Brazilian sugar. As for participation of the sugar in the total of the Brazilian exportations, the growth is substantial, having increased its representation in 95% in the analyzed period. The participation of the commercial balance of the sugar in the GIP Brazilian... |

The new scene of economic globalization and commercial liberalism has instigated the increase of corporative competition. For the cooperative or any other company to survive in the context of tough competition, one of the core issues to be concerned is quality. In order to accompany the present changes, the vision of cooperatives has been facing important modifications. An example of is this is Coopavel (Brazilian cooperative situated in the southern State of Paraná), which has launched a differentiated system of raw milk payment to assure the quality of its received milk, and, consequently, the improvement of its products’ quality. This paper proposes to present a case about Coopavel, analyzing its quality improvement program of milk production. |

This piece of work was accomplished objectifying to analyze the technological strategies in the sugar-cane agro-industry in the state of Paraná, using Freeman’s classification ( 1974 ) as a theorical reference. The “inquiry” technic through questionnaires sent by mail was the means put forward for the gathering of primary data. As a corollary, the sample of the Paraná units researched put in evidence the economical benefitting from the sub-products of sugar-cane in the use of agricultural and mechanical technologies, which has reflected on the high rates of agricultural and industrial profits of the segment. The capacity of generating jobs in the segment was also evident, as well as the significant number of establishments which count on their own P&D.... |

This research aimed to evaluate the performance of the external sector in the Brazilian sugar and ethanol industry from 1999 to 2007. Were used two indicators of international trade, the Openness Index (Oi) and External Sector Development Index (SXi). As a corollary, it was found that the degree of openness of trade, in the period, had intermediate levels. The sugar and ethanol industry had several years in high vulnerability, instead, the analysis showed that the industry is looking for a greater presence in international trade, considering that showed an increasing trend in trade volume. |

The point of interest in this work is the dynamics of the small property through a filière analysis, identifying the internal and external relationships by the aggregation of value in each chain, besides calculating its contribution to the total value aggregation. Seeking to obtaining results, a case study was carried out and an input-product matrix was structured, using production values of a small property (12 ha). As a result, the property was found to be inserted in three filières (soy, milk and swine production), demonstrating the characteristic change of self-sufficiency for the integration in production chains. In the value aggregation (of total production) originating from the property (R$ 3.044.570), resulting in a final product of R$ 1.278.925,... |

The objective of this paper was to verify the concentration of the sugar cane agro-industry in the Minas Gerais State after the sectorial deregulation. This paper aims to appraise the technological capabilities of sugarcane agro-industry in Minas Gerais State, that has the second largest area planted with sugarcane in Brazil, that is 679.000 ha. A field research survey with sugar and ethanol mills provides the primary data for assessing technological capabilities. The theoretical approach used was the technological capabilities matrix, which is based in Lall (1992), being this matrix divided into three specifications: basic (simple routine), intermediate (adaptive duplicative) and advanced (innovative risky). As a main finding, this sugarcane agro-industry, technically qualified and with low cost, presents a reasonable domain of basic and intermediate technological capabilities. However, the advanced... |
