| Anchovies are members of the Engraulidae family, characterized to present coastal pelagic habits, concentrating in large schoolings distributed among the continental shelf and semi-closed environment, like bays, where they are target of heavy fisheries. The present study aims to describe spatial and temporal distribution of Cetengraulis edentulous (Cuvier, 1828) in the Sepetiba bay (22º54'-23º04'S, 43º34'-44º10'W) and to assess influences of environmental variables on fish occurrence. | Variations in the físh populations of mullets were assessed aiming to detect trends in abundances during their early life cycle and relationship with environmental parameters. Fish were sampled between August 1994 and July 1997 using a beach scine and environmental parameters of water temperature, salinity and transparency were taken at each sampling. Five sites were systematically sampled, two of them in the inner Bay, and three in the outer Bay near to the sea limit. | Anchoa tricolor (Agassiz, 1829) is the only anchovy of commercial importance in Sepetiba Bay, supporting an intensive commercial fishery by small sized seine boats provide of hydroacustics sounder detecting device. This study analyses the accompanying fauna in the A. tricolor fishery, and the influence of environmental parameters in fish composition. Seven samples were taken with a seine net between March and September 1999, capturing 114,430 fish, comprising 17 species and 11 families. Engraulidae and Clupeidae were the most abundant families, accounting to 94.2 % of the total number of fish. | A distribuição e abundância da ictiofauna na zona de arrebentação de praias arenosas do Município do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, foram estudadas objetivando detectar variações sazonais ou influências do grau de exposição na estrutura da comunidade de peixes jovens. Amostras trimestrais foram realizadas em 10 praias sendo agrupadas de acordo com o nível de exposição (abrigada, exposta e muito exposta), entre Janeiro e Novembro de 2004, com os arrastos tendo sido efetuados perpendiculares à linha de costa. Foram registrados 6.464 peixes, distribuídos em 38 espécies e 22 famílias, com o predomínio de formas juvenis ou de pequeno porte. | Distribution and relative abundance of juvenile fish of the family Engraulididae in the Sepetiba Bay, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was assessed to detect patterns of use of the shallows during their early life cycle. Two yearly cycle (March-1996 to February-1997 and March-1997 to February-1998) were studied by a total of 120 beach net samples at five sites, two of them located in the inner Bay and three in the outer Bay near to the sea limit.
