Note on the germination of Vochysia tucanorum seeds treated with growth regulators Rev. Bras. Bot.
Pereira,Bruno F.; Simão,Edson; Terra Filho,João B.; Cardoso,Jean C.; Cardoso,Victor J. M..
(Note on the germination of Vochysia tucanorum seeds treated with growth regulators). The aim of this work was to evaluate the germination response of Vochysia tucanorum Mart. seeds treated with GA3 and CEPA and germinated under white light or darkness. Newly collected seeds from a Cerrado area were stored for 14 days at two temperatures (25 °C ± 2 and 7 °C ± 1). After the storage period the seeds were pre-treated with distilled water (control), gibberellic acid (GA3), 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (CEPA) and a mixture of GA3 + CEPA. Following this, the seeds were sown in Petri dishes on filter paper moistened with distilled water and germinated in either darkness or white light. The results suggest that seeds are non-photoblastic and non-dormant, however a...

Germination of Styrax camporum Pohl. seeds in response to substrate types, moisture contents and the seed morphology Anais da ABC (AABC)
Simão,Edson; Nakamura,Adriana T.; Takaki,Massanori.
This study evaluated the contributions of Styrax camporum seed morphology (size of seeds, presence or absence of endocarp attached to the seed), different substrates (filter paper, vermiculite, sand and the soils of cerrado s. str., cerradão and a riparian forest), different water potentials (0, -0.1, -0.2, -0.3, -0.4 and -0.5 MPa), light and temperature to seed germination. Seed size did not affect the germination percentage when seeds were sown on vermiculite. Seeds were affected by small variations in the moisture content of the tested substrates, showing a significant decrease in germination under water potentials lower than -0.1 MPa, close to the field capacity of cerrado s. str. soils. At the temperatures of 15 and 20°C, a significant decrease in...

Influence of light and temperature on seed germination of Cereus pernambucensis Lemaire (Cactaceae) Biota Neotropica
Socolowski,Fábio; Vieira,Daniela Cristine Mascia; Simão,Edson; Takaki,Massanori.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of light and temperature on germination of Cereus pernambucensis seeds, a species of columnar cactus native to Brazil and naturally incident in the restinga. Cereus pernambucensis seeds were incubated under different temperatures, from 5 to 45 °C, with 5 °C intervals, and under alternating temperatures of 15-20 °C, 15-30 °C, 20-25 °C, 20-30 °C, 20-35 °C, 25-30 °C, 25-35 °C, and 30-35 °C, both under continuous white light and dark. The seeds were also incubated in a gradient of phytochrome photoequilibrium at 25 °C. The highest percentage germination in this species was between 25 and 30 °C. The minimum temperature was between 15 and 20 °C and the maximum between 35 and 40 °C. Alternating...

Época de colheita e capacidade germinativa de sementes de Tibouchina mutabilis (Vell.) Cogn. (Melastomataceae) Biota Neotropica
Simão,Edson; Nakamura,Adriana Tiemi; Takaki,Massanori.

The germination of seeds of Epiphyllum phyllanthus (L.) Haw. (Cactaceae) is controlled by phytochrome and by nonphytochrome related process Biota Neotropica
Simão,Edson; Nakamura,Adriana Tiemi; Takaki,Massanori.
The Epiphyllum phyllanthus seeds present high sensitivity to light and their germination can be promoted by dim green safe light through the very low fluence response mediated by phytochrome A. Part of seed population have phytochrome B in active form (Pfr) enough to promote germination in darkness. Seeds of Epiphyllum phyllanthus germinate in a wide temperature range from 10 to 40°C, reaching complete germination in the range of 15 to 30°C. Above 35°C the germination rate increases indicating control by a non phytochrome related process. The analysis of kinetics of seed germination indicated that the phytochrome A control is less dependent on temperature than phytochrome B controlled process.

Effect of light and temperature on seed germination in Tibouchina mutabilis (Vell.) Cogn. (Melastomataceae) Biota Neotropica
Simão,Edson; Takaki,Massanori.
The effect of light and temperature on Tibouchina mutabilis seed germination was analyzed by isothermic incubations in the range of 10 to 40 °C, with 5 °C intervals under both continuous white light (32.85 µmolm-2s-1) and darkness and alternating temperatures (15-20; 15-25; 15-30; 15-35; 20-25; 20-30; 20-35; 25-30; 25-35 and 30-35 °C) under both photoperiod of 12 hours and continuous darkness. The seeds of T. mutabilis need light to trigger the germination and no germination was observed in darkness. The range of optimum temperatures for germination was between 25 to 30 °C and the 20-25 °C alternating temperatures. These results indicate that T. mutabilis behaves as a pioneer species and daily alternating temperatures did not change the light sensitivity...

The epiphytic Cactaceae Hylocereus setaceus (Salm-Dick ex DC.) ralf bauer seed germination is controlled by light and temperature BABT
Simão,Edson; Socolowski,Fábio; Takaki,Massanori.
The effect of light and temperature on seed germination in Hylocereus setaceus was analyzed by isothermic incubations under continuous white light and darkness. The minimum temperature for germination was between 5 to 10°C and the maximum between 45 to 50°C. The optimum temperaturewais between 25 and 30°C. The involvement of phytochrome, by very low fluence response, in controlled seed germination was attained by incubation in a gradient of photoequilibrium of phytochrome. The results indicated that seeds of H. setaceus germinated in a wide range of temperature, under canopy and in open areas, but in complete darkness they did not germinate.
