| Various records of A. simplex Carter, 1879 from the Atlantic are assigned to three new species of the sponge genus Asteropus Sollas, 1888, viz.: A. brasiliensis sp. n., A. vasiformis sp. n., and A. niger sp. n., whereas A. simplex s.s. is restricted to the Indo- Pacific. A worldwide study of Asteropus specimens resulted in the conclusion that two species groups exist, namely “simplex”- like species (with true sanidasters), and “sarasinorum”-like species (with spiny microrhabds), as previously observed by Bergquist (1965, 1968). A newly discovered microsclere complement of trichodragmata in the first group strengthens the need for generic distinction of both lineages, and accordingly the name Melophlus Thiele, 1899 is reinstated for the “sarasinorum”... |

| Seven dictyoceratid sponge species were collected from the Gulf of Aqaba, Northern Red Sea. Two new species were recognized: Scalarispongia aqabaensis n. sp. and Spongia lesleighae n. sp. Five others belong to the known species, Fascaplysinopsis reticulata (Hentschel, 1912), Phyllospongia papyracea (Esper, 1806), Hyattella tubaria (Lendenfeld, 1889), Spongia arabica (Keller, 1889) and Spongia irregularis (Lendenfeld, 1889). Hyattella tubaria, considered a synonym of H. intestinalis Lamarck, 1814) by Cook & Bergquist (2002) is demonstrated to be a valid species. Specimens are described and illustrated by photographs of preserved specimens and microphotographs of sections. |

| Sampling in the North Aegean Sea yielded nine species of the family Suberitidae, four of which, Pseudosuberites sulphureus, P. hyalinus, Suberiles ficus and S. syringella, are new for the fauna of the Eastern Mediterranean, and three more, S. carnosus, S. domuncula, and S. massa, are new records for the fauna of the Aegean Sea. For each of the nine species comments on the systematics, as well as geographical and ecological information is given. A redescription is given of the little known species Suberites massa Nardo. A review of the distribution of all Mediterranean Suberitidae is also presented, in which it is concluded that a further three species not represented in our material have been reported from the Eastern Mediterranean, viz. | An annotated comprehensive list is provided of all shallow-water sponges (down to 60 m) recently collected and previously recorded from Jamaica. Five new species are described, Plakina jamaicensis, Melophlus ruber, Agelas repens, Stylissa caribica and Hyrtios tubulatus, two of which belong to genera not recorded before from the Western Atlantic (viz. Melophlus and Stylissa). The number of species recorded from shallow waters (reefs, mangroves and lagoons) now amounts to 157 species, several of which, however, are still of uncertain status. |

| A second investigation of the North Jamaican deep fore-reef slope, using mixed gas to reach depths from 70 m to a maximum of 107 m depth, revealed 43 species, 9 of which are new to science: Erylus incrustans, Polymastia fordei, Pseudaxinella flava, Phakellia bettinae, Iotrochota agglomerata, Callyspongia densasclera, Niphates lutea, Xestospongia deweerdtae, and Euryspongia lankesteri. |

| A new sponge species, Cladocroce burapha n. sp. (Chalinidae, Haplosclerida, Porifera), is described from Chonburi province, eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand, Thailand. The new species can be separated from other Cladocroce species by a combination of characters, including growth form, form and size of the spicules, and habitat. This is the first record of the genus Cladocroce from Thailand. |
