Impacts of the Economic Reform Program on the Performance of the Egyptian Agricultural Sector AgEcon
Soliman, Ibrahim; Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Gaber Amer, Mohamed; Kandil, Siham.
From 1986 to 2007 Egypt’s agricultural policy transitioned from a tightly controlled to a more liberalized regime. This study examines the impact of this change on the performance of the wheat (imported grain) and rice (exported grain) sectors. In terms of profitability, we found that the cost of production increased substantially in both grains, driven primarily by the rise in land rent and labor wage. But the wheat and rice sectors’ profitability did not suffer significantly, as advances in new seed technologies and adoption of better farm practices including farm mechanization increased yield and compensated for the higher cost. Considering market efficiency, we found that over the study period the farmer’s share of the consumer’s expenditure...

Impact of the Structural Adjustment Program on Agricultural Production and Resource Use in Egypt AgEcon
Hazell, Peter B.R.; Perez, Nicostrato D.; Siam, Gamal; Soliman, Ibrahim.
This paper uses an agricultural sector model to evaluate the effects of an ambitious and ongoing policy reform program on agricultural production and resource use in Egypt. The results show that Egypt has already gained from the policy reforms, but that much larger gains depend on increased exports of high value crops. Water is found to be emerging as an important constraint on agriculture, and it will be essential to establish more effective institutional and pricing mechanisms to encourage greater water use efficiency in the future. Because many of the new lands compete with the more productive lands of the Nile delta for water, the economic return to the development of new lands is also found to be low. The policy reforms are not likely to lead to...

The Role Of Rural Women In Labor And Decision Making For Buffalo Enterprise In Egyptian Agriculture AgEcon
Soliman, Ibrahim.
This article investigated the rural woman share in labor use her role and in decision-making. of the expenditure pattern of the income generated from the milk activity from Egyptian buffaloes on the conventional Egyptian farm. The analysis dealt with answering the following questions: Who receives this income? What are the channels through which this income is spent (Consumption versus investment and saving)? The study focused upon the share of the farmer’s wife, the farmer himself, both together, other adult women members and other adult men members of the household. The study relied upon cross section seasonal data generated from a purposive sample survey conducted in three villages of Governorates (Sharkia and Gharbia) in Egyptian Nile Delta, in the...

Nonconventional Technology for Agricultural Development in Developing Countries AgEcon
Soliman, Ibrahim.
This paper concerns the economic assessment of a nonconventional technology to provide a cheap food and/or feed for many developing countries, using wasted resources, i.e. coastal arid areas irrigated directly with seawater to grow a halophyte crop(Salicornia-sos-7). It was cultivated for two successive years in Kuwait. The analysis showed that the harvested yield was 20 tons per hectare, which provided 12.42 MT of straw for sale and 1.7 MT of oil seeds for processing. Processed seeds of 1-hectare provide 425 kg of food oil and 1.1 MT of feed meal.Under Kuwait conditions, on per hectare basis, the total costs of production( fixed &variable costs)were $3088. However, simulation of this technology under a conventional developing country like Egypt with...

IMPACTS OF EGYPTIAN SOCIO-ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT ON DIETARY PATTERN AND ADEQUACY AgEcon
Soliman, Ibrahim; Eid, Nafissa.
Health and nutrition status including dietary adequacy are basic components of the human development and indicators for welfare in a certain community. The study focused upon how far a socio-economic environment would affect the dietary pattern and adequacy in Egypt. The current dietary pattern was compared with that before the economic reform adjustment, i.e. before 1986. Dietary adequacy of energy and protein was assessed to define the poverty line among urban and rural populations. The investigated changes in the socio-economic environment were income level, distribution, growth and price level by region; as well as demographic features of the household. Finally, the study discussed policy implications on both micro and macro level and provided...

Egypt’s Household Expenditure Pattern: Does It Alleviate a Food Crisis? AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Soliman, Ibrahim.
We estimated a system of Engel functions for two survey periods, 1999/2000 and 2004/2005, to quantify the impact of changes of income on household expenditure behavior and to investigate how expenditure responsiveness changes with income. We found that rural households have a higher expenditure share for food categories but a lower share for non-food categories compared to urban households. The expenditure share did not change so much between the two survey periods, with only a slight decline in the share of cereals-bread and the non-food category and an increase in the meat-fish-dairy category. All estimates have a good fit, and the total expenditure explanatory variable is significant in all equations. In general, households with lower incomes are...

A Review of Agricultural Policy Evolution, Agricultural Data Sources, and Food Supply and Demand Studies in Egypt AgEcon
Soliman, Ibrahim; Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Bassiony, Halah.
Over the years the control of the Government of Egypt on the agricultural sector has increasingly weakened with the progressive elimination of the input subsidy, area control, price control, procurement control, and the constraints in private sector participation in processing and trade. The only remaining major government involvement is the food subsidy in some wheat products, the “baladi” bread subsidy in particular. Policy analysis studies in Egypt have been made possible because the Government of Egypt collects and publishes significant amounts of agricultural data on a regular basis. Two of the most widely used data sets are the Household Budget Survey conducted and published by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, and the Food...
