A PROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF THE POTENTIAL EFFECT OF BIO-ENGINEERED GRAINS ON COMMODITY MARKETING SYSTEMS AgEcon
Sonka, Steven T.; Schroeder, R. Christopher; Cunningham, Carrie J..
The goal of the analyses described in this paper is to explore market system changes that could result from adoption of bioengineered crops, if that adoption occurs. The analysis results reported are prospective in nature with the overall purpose of identifying questions and key issues, rather than predict specific outcomes.

UNDERSTANDING TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION THROUGH SYSTEM DYNAMICS MODELING: IMPLICATIONS FOR AGRIBUSINESS MANAGEMENT AgEcon
Fisher, Donna K.; Norvell, Jonathan; Sonka, Steven T.; Nelson, Mark J..
This work demonstrates the utility of sophisticated simulation tools in aiding agribusiness managers' decision making. The system dynamics model developed here provides insight into the use of such models to evaluate potential adoption rates and diffusion patterns of yield mapping and monitoring technologies. The model allows for comparative analyses of the possible effects of different profit assumptions on adoption and diffusion.

NE- 165 Case Study : CANOLA AS AN EMERGING INDUSTRY: A Processor and Producer Perspective AgEcon
Coaldrake, Karen; Sonka, Steven T..
The canola industry in the United States has been very small with a limited canola oil demand being met through imports. However, an apparent increase in consumer demand for more healthful alternatives to traditional vegetable oils has sparked an interest among domestic processors desiring to be among the first entrants to a U.S. canola oil market. Processor interest has in turn led to some producer experimentation with the crop. This case study documents the early activities of U.S. Canola Processors (USCP), one of two companies processing the U.S. crop, and Ralph King, a Central Illinois canola producer. USCP, a joint venture of Central Soya and Calgene, describes their role in terms of "building an industry," according to General Manager Larry Horn. The...

MACHINERY INVESTMENT DECISIONS: A SIMULATED ANALYSIS FOR CASH GRAIN FARMS AgEcon
Gustafson, Cole R.; Barry, Peter J.; Sonka, Steven T..
A combination of experimental and simulation procedures identify important factors in an Illinois cash grain farmer’s machinery investment decisions. In an experiment setting, a panel of farmers based investment decisions on their own expectations, farm situations, and varying policy scenarios. In general, the results show investment levels statistically related to the tenure and leverage of operators, the economic conditions they faced, and the age of existing machinery. Alternative public policies of lower commodity price supports, tax reform, and interest rate subsidies influenced the timing of purchases but did not alter total investment amounts.

FARMERS' PREFERENCES FOR CROP CONTRACTS AgEcon
Lajili, Kaouthar; Barry, Peter J.; Sonka, Steven T.; Mahoney, Joseph T..
An empirical approach combining elements of principal-agent theory and transaction cost economics is used to determine farmers'’ preferences for contract terms in crop production. The approach is tested by asking grain farmers to rank contract choices and specify price premiums in simulated case situations. The statistical results indicate that farmers'’ preferences for rates of cost sharing, price premiums, and financing arrangements are significantly influenced by asset specialization and uncertainty associated with the case situations, and by selected business and personal characteristics.

AN ANALYSIS OF THE RISK AVERSION OF FARM OPERATORS: AN ASSET PORTFOLIO APPROACH AgEcon
Lins, David A.; Gabriel, Stephen C.; Sonka, Steven T..
The absolute and relative risk aversion characteristics of a large sample of farm operators were estimated from the observed portfolio responses to changes in wealth. Regression estimates suggest that farm operators display decreasing absolute risk aversion. Relative risk aversion varies by type of farm. However, the definition of risky assets has an important bearing on relative risk aversion characteristics. Non-wealth variables are also important in explaining the holding of risky assets by farm operators.

HOW SOY LABELING INFLUENCES PREFERENCE AND TASTE AgEcon
Wansink, Brian; Park, Sea Bum; Sonka, Steven T.; Morganosky, Michelle A..
Using a “Phantom Ingredient” taste test, this article demonstrates how the use of soy labels and health claims on a package negatively biased taste perceptions and attitudes toward a food erroneously thought to contain soy. Consumers who ate products which mentioned soy on the package described the taste more grainy, less flavorful, and as having a strong aftertaste compared to those who ate the product but saw no soy label. Yet, while putting “soy” on a package negatively influenced taste-conscious consumers, when combined with a health claim, it improved attitudes among consumers who are health-conscious, natural food lovers, or dieters. Our results and discussion provide better direction for researchers who work with ingredient labeling as well as...

NE- 165 Case Study : LEANER PORK: Can New Sector Linkages Be Formed? AgEcon
Coaldrake, Karen; Sonka, Steven T..
A more demanding and evolving consumer is creating change in the market for pork and many working within the industry are predicting opportunities for leaner products. However, leaner pork enthusiasts also are frustrated by the established industry food chain that offers little incentive for modification. Modification would require change on the part of genetic suppliers, commercial producers, packers and processors, and retailers. However, many of these food chain participants traditionally have not collaborated with others in the sector. Yet the establishment of these new linkages may be key to the success of a leaner pork industry. This case study documents several of the activities currently occurring within the leaner pork industry and explores new...

SYSTEMS DESIGN PROCEDURES FOR FARM ACCOUNTING AgEcon
Schnitkey, Gary D.; Sonka, Steven T..
This paper presents a conceptual framework, known as systems development, for designing, selecting, and evaluating information systems. Techniques are developed that aid farm managers in choosing an accounting system. Six farmers took part in case studies testing the selection techniques. The participating farmers exhibited great diversity in the preferred design of their accounting systems and the manner in which they desired reports to be presented. This diversity suggests that system selection is an important aspect of implementing an accounting system.

ESTIMATING THE VALUE OF SEQUENTIAL UPDATING SOLUTIONS FOR INTRAYEAR CROP MANAGEMENT AgEcon
Mjelde, James W.; Dixon, Bruce L.; Sonka, Steven T..
Results of comparing updating versus nonupdating modeling assumptions call into question the use of models based on nonupdating strategies as valid representations of actual farmer actions. If farmers are sequential updaters, the results indicate that models assuming no updating are inaccurate. The degree of this inaccuracy ranges between 4% and 10% of profits for the study area. Further, the results indicate that updating appears to be important for both descriptive and prescriptive studies of farmer behavior.

Farmer Identification and Commitment Responses to Institutional Change in Marketing Channel Structures AgEcon
Gow, Hamish R.; Stevenson, Mark; Westgren, Randall E.; Sonka, Steven T..
The structure of the New Zealand merino industry has been through a period of rapid organizational change and marketing innovation over the past decade. This has seen it move away from a publicly regulated spot auction market structure characterised by undifferentiated product receiving pooled equilibrium commodity prices often at a discount to the international market price to a market structure composed of both privately controlled strongly vertically integrated marketing initiatives characterised by tight contractual relationships gaining substantial premiums over the international market place operating concurrently along side the traditional spot auction markets. The emergence of these new marketing structures has thus forced farmers to seriously...
