Effect of replacing organic grass-clover silage from primary growth with regrowth on feed intake and milk yield of dairy cows Organic Eprints

Under Norwegian conditions, diets based on primary growth (PG) silage typically increase milk yield compared to silage prepared from the regrowth (RG). Organic PG, dominated by immature grasses, is often high in energy and low in crude protein (CP), whereas the opposite is the case for organic RG harvests, dominated by clover. Here, we tested the hypotheses that increasing proportions of RG will reduce the total supply of metabolizable energy, but increase the CP intake, and that there is a dietary optimal mix of PG and RG to meet requirements for optimal milk production. Sammenhengen mellom engdriftssystemer og melkekvalitet i økologisk landbruk skal undersøkes i et nytt prosjekt. Valget mellom kortvarig og langvarig eng er avgjørende for den botaniske sammensetningen i drøvtyggerfôret og en kan forvente at melkas kvalitetsegenskaper påvirkes. Tolv økologiske melkebruk ble paret med 12 konvensjonelle i Midt-Norge og inngår i en toårig feltstudie som startet i januar 2007. Seks gårder i hver gruppe er valgt ut blant gårder med kortvarig eng og 6 blant gårder med langvarig eng. Annenhver måned skal det samles inn melkeprøver fra gårdstanken og fôrprøver på alle gårdene. Tap av nitrogen (N) er et stort problem i landbruket, og i Europeiske direktiver blir det krevd forandring i landbrukspraksis for å redusere avrenningen. Ekstensiv mjølkeproduksjonen basert på heimeprodusert fôr er den mest effektive måten å bedre N-effektiviteten på. N-effektiviteten på gardsnivå reduseres dersom innkjøpet av fôr er høgt i forhold til planteproduksjonspotensialet på garden.

Hydrogenering av fettsyrer i vomma - effekt av botanisk sammenstening av surfôret Organic Eprints

Surfôr fra kortvarig eng (KS) hadde lavere innhold av C18:3c9,12,15 enn surfôr fra langvarig eng(LS)og raigrassurfôr. Likevel ga surfôr fra KS høyest innhold av C18:3c9,12,15 i melk. Årsaken var redusert hydrogenering i vomma. Dette gjaldt også summen av alle umettede C18-fettsyrer men ikke C18:1c9 eller C18:2c9,12. Årsaken til redusert hydrogenering for KS kan være rødkløverens innhold av PPO.

White or red clover-grass silage in organic dairy milk production:Grassland productivity and milk production responses with different levels of concentrate Organic Eprints

Red (RC) or white (WC) clover were grown in mixture with grasses, ensiled and offered to dairy cows in early lactation over two successive years (48 cows per year) to compare grassland yield, feed intake, milk production and milk quality. The crops were ensiled in round bales and proportional mixtures of the second and third cut prepared each year were used to ensure that the silage treatments were representative of the crop. In addition to silage type, concentrate supplementation, without and with (10 kg/day), was included as a factor in a 2×2 factorial, continuous experiment. Phytoestrogens are hormone-like substances in plants that can substantially influence human health (positively or negatively), and when fed to dairy cows are partly transferred to their milk. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of varying the botanical composition and regrowth interval of legume-grass silage on phytoestrogen intake and milk phytoestrogen concentrations. In one experiment, 15 Swedish Red dairy cows were fed two- or three-cut red clover-grass silage, or two-cut birdsfoot trefoil-grass silage. Sulphur supply: a limiting factor in organic roughage-based livestock production? Organic Eprints

Abstract - The herbage sulphur (S) content on 28 organic farms was monitored in order to evaluate the S supply for plants and ruminants in organic livestock production. The S content and the protein content were generally low. S fertilisation improved the yield and protein content of red clover only when the initial S supply was very low. Increasing S application rates did not increase the S content of red clover above a certain level that depended on other soil and environmental factors. Instead of an increase in the shoots with increasing S supply, there was an accumulation of S in the roots.

Prosjektet «BeiteRessurs» har vært ledet av Norsk Institutt for Bioøkonomi (NIBIO). Norsk senter for økologisk landbruk (NORSØK) og Senter for bygdeforskning har vært samarbeidsparter. Prosjektet ble gjennomført 2013-2016. Hovedmålet var å teste mulighetene for å ta i bruk marginale jordbruksområder som har ligget brakk, til beite for sau. Denne rapporten tar for seg de økonomiske konsekvensene av å ta i bruk et nedlagt innmarksbeite til vår- og høstbeite på sauegarder i Midt-Norge.

There are differences in grass-clover proportions and chemical composition between herbage from primary growth (PG) and regrowth (RG) in grass-clover leys. Mixing silages made from PG and RG may provide a more optimal diet to dairy cows than when fed separately. Feed nitrogen conversion in lactating dairy cows on pasture as affected by concentrate supplementation Organic Eprints

The effect of concentrate supplementation on nitrogen (N) intake and excretion in grazing lactating dairy cows was determined in three herds in Norway. Grazing trials were conducted with each herd in June and August for two consecutive years. The average supplementation was 1.8 (S.D. 2.1) kg DM/day, and the concentrate was based on grain with a N content ranging from 18.7 to 24 g/kg DM. Herbage DM and N intake were reduced with increasing supplementation, but total DM and N intake increased. Milk yield and protein content increased by 1.1 kg milk and 0.28 g protein per kg milk for each kg extra concentrate. Milk N excretion increased with increasing supplementation (6.5 g N/kg DM), and N utilisation improved by 11.7 g N per kg N intake per kg extra...

Effekten av kløverart og høstetid på innhold og sammensetning av fettsyrer i avlingen fra økologisk kløvereng ble undersøkt. Kløverart påvirket ikke innholdet av fettsyrer men økende innhold av rødkløver økte andelen av alfalinolensyre. Tidlig 1. slått førte til høyere innhold av fettsyrer og større andel av alfalinolensyre enn normal høstetid.

Omsetjing av planteøstrogen hos mjølkeku - effekt av botanisk samansetjing av surfôret Organic Eprints

Planteøstrogena formononetin og daidzein blir i stor grad omsatt til equol og vidare til ukjende sambindingar i vomma. Nedbrytinga av planteøstrogena i vom var sterkare i surfôr laga på raigras og langvarig artsrik eng enn i surfôr laga av timoteieng eller kortvarig eng med raudkløver. Attfinninga av planteøstrogena var størst i gjødsel og minst i mjølk. Omsetjinga av equol i kroppen (intermediær) var avgrensa av fart (rate limiting) medan dette synest ikkje å vere tilfelle i vom og tarm.

In vitro anthelmintic effects of bark extracts from Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris against sheep nematodes Organic Eprints

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in sheep are a common cause of reduced animal welfare and performance, and thus, high economical losses. The emerging drug resistance in GIN prompts for new methods in combating infections. Several studies have indicated an anti-parasitic effect of tannin-rich plants when included in the diet. The objective of this study was to assess the potential in vitro anthelmintic efficacy of tannin-rich extracts from bark of common Norwegian trees (spruce and pine) against GIN of sheep.

Equol and enterolactone – two mammalian phytoestrogens with estrogenic potency found in organically produced milk Organic Eprints

Cows fed red clover yield milk with high concentrations of the isoflavandiol equol, a phytoestrogen with high estrogen potency. Soy products have much higher content of isoflavones than milk, but not all humans are able to produce equol from isoflavones. Many plant lignans can be metabolised to enterolactone, and milk concentrations tend to be higher during grazing season than indoor feeding season. Therefore, milk produced on feed containing red clover and milk produced on pasture may be considered a functional food. However, more documentations on possible effects in humans, including unwanted side effects are needed.

Forage botanical and chemical composition on dairy farms with different grassland systems and production systems Organic Eprints

Thirty-two dairy farms in Middle-Norway with different grassland systems (short-term (<4 years) grassland (S) or long-term (>7 years) grassland (L)) and different production systems (organic (O) or conventional (C)) were compared in a field study in 2007. In a principal component analysis on variables including farm details, botanical composition and chemical forage composition, the farms were separated into organic and conventional farms with the exception of one farm. Amongst the organic farms most SO farms were distinguished from LO farms. Concentration of forage crude protein was positively correlated with proportion of grass. Effect of pasture botanical composition on milk composition in organic production Organic Eprints

Milk samples from sixteen Norwegian Red dairy cows grazing mixed swards of either grass-red clover (GR) or mixed swards of sown and unsown species of grass, clover and other herbs (GCH) were collected during four periods. Both pastures were organically managed. Pasture botanical composition had no effect on milk fat, protein or vitamin concentration and only minor effects on fatty acid composition. Milk from GR had higher concentrations of the phytoestrogens equol, genistein and biochanin A than the milk from GCH. Concentrations of equol in milk from GR were higher than concentrations reported from experiments with red clover silage. The oxidative stability of the milk lipids was not affected by pasture type.
