Extended evaluation of polymeric and lipophilic sorbents for passive sampling of marine toxins ArchiMer
Zendong, Zita; Herrenknecht, Christine; Abadie, Eric; Brissard, Charline; Tixier, Celine; Mondeguer, Florence; Sechet, Veronique; Amzil, Zouher; Hess, Philipp.
Marine biotoxins are algal metabolites that can accumulate in fish or shellfish and render these foodstuffs unfit for human consumption. These toxins, released into seawater during algal occurrences, can be monitored through passive sampling. Acetone, methanol and isopropanol were evaluated for their efficiency in extracting toxins from algal biomass. Isopropanol was chosen for further experiments thanks to a slightly higher recovery and no artifact formation. Comparison of Oasis HLB, Strata-X, BondElut C18 and HP-20 sorbent materials in SPE-mode led to the choice of Oasis HLB, HP-20 and Strata-X. These three sorbents were separately exposed as passive samplers for 24 h to seawater spiked with algal extracts containing known amounts of okadaic acid (OA),...

PCDD/F and PCB multi-media ambient concentrations, congener patterns and occurrence in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon (Etang de Thau, France) ArchiMer
Castro Jimenez, J; Deviller, Genevieve; Ghiani, A; Loos, R; Mariani, G; Skejo, H; Umlauf, G; Wollgast, J; Laugier, Thierry; Heas Moisan, K; Leaute, Frederique; Munschy, Catherine; Tixier, Celine; Tronczynski, Jacek.
Ambient concentrations, congener patterns and multi-media distribution of PCDD/Fs and PCBs were determined in air, water, sediment and mussels in a semi-enclosed marine ecosystem (Thau lagoon, France). Sigma 2,3,7,8-PCDD/F and Sigma 7ICES PCB air concentrations (0.2-1.4 and 31-57 pg m(-3), respectively) were typical of rural areas. Concentrations in the water column were very low for PCDD/Fs (163-476 fg L-1) and low for PCBs (138-708 pg L-1). PCDD/F and PCB concentrations found in surface sediment (0.15-1.6 and 2.5-33 ng g(-1) d.w., respectively) and mussel (13-21 pg g(-1) d.w. and 10-39 ng g(-1) d.w., respectively) were medium levels. PCDD/F congener patterns observed in air, water particulate phase and sediments were similar suggesting direct coupling...

Classic and novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in common sole (Solea solea L.) from main nursery zones along the French coasts ArchiMer
Munschy, Catherine; Moisan, Karine; Tixier, Celine; Boulesteix, Lara; Morin, Jocelyne.
Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) were investigated in juvenile common sole from nursery zones situated along the French coast in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Extensive identification was performed with regard to PBDEs, novel BFRs 1.2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE) and decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE), and other non-PBDE BFRs, namely, hexabromobenzene (HBB) and 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexabromobiphenyl (BB-153). Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) concentrations (E 14 congeners) ranged from 0.01 ng/g to 0.16 ng/g wet weight (ww) in muscle, and 0.07 ng/g to 2.8 ng/g ww in liver. Concentrations were in the lower range of those reported in the literature in other European locations. Lower PBDE concentrations, condition indices and lipid contents were observed in...

Mise en place d’un site marin (Etang de Thau) dans le cadre de l’essai interlaboratoires sur les échantillonneurs passifs (EIL AQUAREF) - Rapport d'étape - Convention 2010 - Action 9 ArchiMer
Munaron, Dominique; Hubert, Morgane; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Tixier, Celine.
Passive samplers for monitoring priority micropollutants in surface waters: a national scale study ArchiMer
Mathon, Baptiste; Togola, Anne; Mazella, Nicolas; Lardy-fontan, Sophie; Dabrin, Aymeric; Ghestem, Jean-philippe; Tixier, Celine; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Botta, Fabrizio; Miège, Cécile.
The implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires the monitoring of micropollutants in the aquatic environments to prevent any damages to both human health and ecosystems. In this context, a number of organic and inorganic compounds have been selected as priority pollutants and their measurement is necessary to ensure that water-quality standards are maintained (EC, 2008; EC, 2013; EC, 2015). For two decades, passive sampling methods have been developed for the monitoring of organic and inorganic compounds. Passive samplers allow measuring these compounds at trace levels by accumulation and concentration over long-term exposure. Moreover, the use of integrative passive samplers (IPS) allows a better representativeness of measurements...

Dietary exposure of juvenile common sole (Solea solea L.) to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs): Part 2. Formation, bioaccumulation and elimination of hydroxylated metabolites ArchiMer
Munschy, Catherine; Moisan, Karine; Tixier, Celine; Pacepavicius, G.; Alaee, M..
The uptake, elimination and transformation of six PBDE congeners (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -209) were studied in juvenile common sole (Solea solea L) exposed to spiked contaminated food over a three-month period, and then depurated over a five-month period. Methoxylated (MeO-) and hydroxylated (OH-) PBDEs were determined in fish plasma exposed to PBDEs and compared to those obtained in control fish. While all MeO- and some OH- congeners identified in fish plasma were found to originate from non-metabolic sources, several OH- congeners, i.e., OH-tetraBDEs and OH-pentaBDEs, were found to originate from fish metabolism. Among these, 4 '-OH-BDE-49 was identified as a BDE-47 metabolite. Congener 4 '-OH-BDE-101, identified here for the first time, may be...

Comparison of five integrative samplers in laboratory for the monitoring of indicator and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls in water ArchiMer
Jacquet, Romain; Miege, Cecile; Smedes, Foppe; Tixier, Celine; Tronczynski, Jacek; Togola, Anne; Berho, Catherine; Valor, Ignacio; Llorca, Julio; Barillon, Bruno; Marchand, Philippe; Coquery, Marina.
This study aimed at evaluating and comparing five integrative samplers for the monitoring of indicator and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in water: semi-permeable membrane device (SPMD), silicone rubber, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) strip, Chemcatcher and a continuous-flow integrative sampler (CFIS). These samplers were spiked with performance reference compounds (PRCs) and then simultaneously exposed under constant agitation and temperature in a 200 L stainless steel tank for periods ranging from one day to three months. A constant PCB concentration of about 1 ng·L−1 was achieved by immersing a large amount of silicone rubber sheets (“dosing sheets”) spiked with the target PCBs. The uptake of PCBs in the five samplers showed overall good...

Passive Sampling in Regulatory Chemical Monitoring of Nonpolar Organic Compounds in the Aquatic Environment ArchiMer
Booij, Kees; Robinson, Craig D.; Burgess, Robert M.; Mayer, Philipp; Roberts, Cindy A.; Ahrens, Lutz; Allan, Ian J.; Brant, Jan; Jones, Lisa; Kraus, Uta R.; Larsen, Martin M.; Lepom, Peter; Petersen, Joerdis; Proefrock, Daniel; Roose, Patrick; Schaefer, Sabine; Smedes, Foppe; Tixier, Celine; Vorkamp, Katrin; Whitehouse, Paul.
We reviewed compliance monitoring requirements in the European Union, the United States, and the Oslo-Paris Convention for the protection of the marine environment of the North-East Atlantic, and evaluated if these are met by passive sampling methods for nonpolar compounds. The strengths and shortcomings of passive sampling are assessed for water, sediments, and biota. Passive water sampling is a suitable technique for measuring concentrations of freely dissolved compounds. This method yields results that are incompatible with the EU's quality standard definition in terms of total concentrations in water, but this definition has little scientific basis. Insufficient quality control is a present weakness of passive sampling in water. Laboratory performance...

PCB concentrations in plankton size classes, a temporal study in Marseille Bay, Western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Tiano, Marion; Tronczynski, Jacek; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille; Tixier, Celine; Carlotti, Francois.
PCB levels in plankton were investigated in the Bay of Marseille, Western Mediterranean Sea, between September 2010 and October 2011. Concentrations of PCB congeners (CB 18, CB 52, CB 101, CB 118, CB 138, CB 153, CB 180) were determined in three plankton size-classes (60–200, 200–500 and 500–1000 μm) together with different parameters: chlorophyll content, plankton dry-weight biomass, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios and plankton-community structure. The ∑PCB7 concentrations ranged between 14.2 and 88.1 ng g−1 d.w., for all size classes and all sampling periods. The results do not show the biomass dilution effect and indicate moderate but significant biomagnification with plankton trophic position estimated by δ15N signatures. Equilibrium with...

PCDD/F, PBDE, and nonylphenol contamination in a semi-enclosed bay (Masan Bay, South Korea) and a Mediterranean lagoon (Thau, France) ArchiMer
Hong, Sang Hee; Munschy, Catherine; Kannan, Narayanan; Tixier, Celine; Tronczynski, Jacek; Moisan, Karine; Shim, Won Joon.
Chemical contamination of the coastal marine environment by polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) was assessed along with emerging contaminants such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in an industrially well-developed country (France) and a fast-developing country (Korea). Other chemicals, i.e. nonylphenol (NP) and 5 beta(H)-cholestan-3 beta-ol (coprostanol) were determined to trace industrial waste and/or domestic inputs. These compounds were analyzed in coastal sediments and mussels in two enclosed coastal water bodies: Masan Bay (South Korea) and Thau lagoon (France). The overall levels of target organic contaminants were higher in Masan Bay than in Thau lagoon. The mean concentrations of 17 PCDD/Fs,...

Dietary exposure of juvenile common sole (Solea solea L.) to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs): Part 1. Bioaccumulation and elimination kinetics of individual congeners and their debrominated metabolites ArchiMer
Munschy, Catherine; Moisan, Karine; Tixier, Celine; Olivier, Nathalie; Gastineau, Olivier; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Buchet, Vincent.
The uptake and elimination of six PBDE congeners (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -209) were studied in juvenile common sole (Solea solea L) exposed to spiked contaminated food over a three-month period, then depurated over a five-month period. The results show that all of the studied PBDEs accumulate in fish tissues, including the higher brominated congener BDE-209. Several additional PBDE congeners were identified in the tissues of exposed fish, revealing PBDE transformation, mainly via debromination. The identified congeners originating from PBDE debromination include BDE-49 and BDE-202 and a series of unidentified tetra-, penta-, and hepta- BDEs. Contaminant assimilation efficiencies (AEs) were related to their hydrophobicity (log K-ow) and influenced by...

Modeling of PCB trophic transfer in the Gulf of Lions; 3D coupled model application ArchiMer
Alekseenko, Elena; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Tronczynski, Jacek; Carlotti, F.; Garreau, Pierre; Tixier, Celine; Baklouti, Melika.
3D coupled modeling approach is used for the PCB dispersion assessment in the Gulf of Lion and its transfer to zooplankton via biogeochemical processes. PCB budgets and fluxes between the different species of PCB: dissolved, particulate, biosorbed on plankton, assimilated by zooplankton, which are governed by different processes: adsorption/desorption, bacteria and plankton mortality, zooplankton excretion, grazing, mineralization, volatilization have been estimated. Model outputs were compared with the available in situ data. It was found that the Rhone River outflows play an important role in the organism contamination in the coastal zone, whereas the atmospheric depositions are rather more important in the offshore zones. The transfer of the available...
