Reviews Naturalis
Ooststroom, S.J. van; Touw, A..
The Rijksherbarium received this finely illustrated book from Mr. Anghelos N. Goulandris, chairman of the Board of Governors of the Goulandris Botanical Museum, Kifissia, Greece. In the accompanying letter Mr. Goulandris wrote that this is the first publication of the recently (1963) founded Museum, an institution which has the object of promoting and assisting plant taxonomic activity and research in Greece. The beautiful botanical paintings were made by Mrs. Niki Goulandris, of Athens. They depict many Greek endemics but also species of a much wider distribution. All illustrations are, however, as the author’s introductory note says, of outstanding native wild flowers, especially collected for this purpose by the late Dr. C. N. Goulimis, who also drew up...

Note on Ulmus in Malesia (Ulmaceae) Naturalis
Touw, A.; Steenis, C.G.G.J. van.
Already in 1922 the Netherlands Indian Forest Service had collected Ulmus in North Sumatra and in South Celebes, which was published by F. H. Endert in his Keys to Neth. Indian Trees based on Vegetative Characters (Med. Proefst. Boschwezen 20, 1928, 163). Subsequently Merrill identified the N. Sumatran specimens collected by the Banghams as U. lanceaefolia Roxb. (Contr. Arn. Arb. 8, 1934, 44). We have now several collections but they are all sterile.

Bryology and Bryophytes at the Rijksherbarium Naturalis
Touw, A..
The main task of the first directors of the Rijksherbarium consisted of the preparation of a catalogue of its Dutch East Indian and Japanese collections (cf. van Steenis-Kruseman’s paper in this volume). Among those who contributed to this catalogue was J. H. Molkenboer, a young physician who had graduated on a botanical thesis in 1840. From that year until 1846 he worked on vascular plant collections of the Rijksherbarium and got permission from its director (C. L. Blume) to devote part of his time to bryophytes. He sorted and arranged the Asian collections and started their identification together with his friend and colleague F. Dozy. In 1844 their first precursory paper appeared (‘Muscorum frondosorum novae species ex archipelago indico et Japonia’)....

De Nederlandse soorten van Pleuridium (Musci, Ditrichaceae) Naturalis
Touw, A..
Up to the present Pleuridium subulatum (Hedw.) Rab. sensu Lindb. has been considered a rare species in the Netherlands, whereas P. acuminatum was said to be rather common. The author has re-examined all available Dutch specimens and has reached the conclusion that both species are rather common, P. subulatum being a little more common and distinctly more widespread than P. acuminatum. A list of specimens is given together with a distribution map, and notes concerning nomenclatural problems, differential characters, ecology and periodicity. In the Netherlands, ripe spores of P. acuminatum have been collected between March and September, those of P. subulatum between April and July.

A taxonomic revision of the Hypnodendraceae (Musci) Naturalis
Touw, A..
A revision is made of the genera Hypnodendron and Braithwaitea. Mniodendron and Sciadocladus are reduced to Hypnodendron, Limbella is excluded from the Hypnodendraceae, and Dendro-Hypnum is considered to be not validly published. Hypnodendron rigidum Mitt. is transferred to Pterobryella. The species of Hypnodendron are grouped into nine sections. Five of these are monotypic, viz. Leiocarpos Dix. and four new ones: Lindbergiodendron (including H. arcuatum), Tristichophyllum (H. diversifolium), Mniodendropsis (H. milnei), and Pseudomniodendron (H. fusco-mucronatum). The circumscription of the family also needs revision, but has been maintained unchanged for the time being in the absence of information regarding assumedly related families. A number of...

Een nieuw Nederlands bladmos: Eurhynchium angustirete (Broth.) Kop Naturalis
Touw, A..
Eurhynchium angustirete (Broth.) Kop. (syn. E. zetterstedtii Storm.) is reported as new to the flora of the Netherlands; it was found near Steenwijk (prov. Overijsel). The author measured 33 capsules of E. striatum s. str. and 26 of E. angustirete from various parts of Europe. Those of E. striatum proved to be narrower (0,9—1,0(—1,1) mm) and usually less dark coloured than those of E. angustirete, measuring (0,9—) 1,0—1,4(—1,6) mm. No marked differences were found in the length of the urn.

Siebel, H.N.; Aptroot, A.; Dirkse, G.M.; Dobben, H.F. van; Melick, H.M.H. van; Touw, A..
Red Data List of extinct, endangered and vulnerable mosses and lichens in the Netherlands. Lists are presented of threatened bryophytes and lichens in the Netherlands. The threatened species are classified into 5 Red Data categories (0 Extinct, 1 Endangered, 2 Most vulnerable, 3 Vulnerable, 4 Potentially threatened). The list of threatened bryophytes comprises 274 species and varieties, which is about 50% of the bryophyte flora of the Netherlands. The list of threatened lichens comprises 367 species, 58% of the lichen flora of the Netherlands. Not only epiphytic species are heavily threatened, but also species growing on soil and stones. Among the most threatened bryophyte and lichen habitats many are characteristic for the Netherlands, like roadside...
