Corals from an elevated marl of Talaud (East Indies) Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..
As a member of the Expedition on board H.M. „Willebrord Snellius" Dr. Ph. H. Kuenen had the opportunity to collect a suite of corals from a marine marl, deposited in an old valley now elevated above sea level, near Mahammanale, on the island Talaud, to the North of Celebes. He kindly entrusted to me the identification of the collection, which is now in the National Museum of Geology at Leiden. The following list shows the 15 species, which could be identified, and their stratigraphical distribution. 1. Flabellum rubrum (Q. et G.), Miocene, Pliocene, Pleistocene, Recent. 2. Flabellum pavoninum Less. var. paripavoninum (Alcock), Recent. 3. Acanthocyathus grayi E.H., Miocene?, Pliocene, Pleistocene, Recent. 4. Caryophyllia spec. (probably the recent species...

De atollen en barrière-riffen der Togian-eilanden Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..

Umbgrove, J.H.F..
Only one eruption of the island Una-Una (Gulf of Tomini, Northern Celebes), in 1898, has been recorded in historical time; it was described in 1902 by Wichmann (l. c.) after data gathered from different witnesses. No lava flowed out, it was an ash-eruption. During that eruption large mud streams, called lahars, descended along the slope of the volcano and some broad flat-bottomed valleys were eroded (Pl. 44, fig. 4) which are known so very well from some Javanese volcanoes, especially from Mount Kelut. With the latter Una-Una shows many points of resemblance, in shape, structure and in type of the latest eruption. Along one of the large typical lahar valleys we climbed the volcanoe starting near Kololio. Fig. 6 and 7 show the higher parts of our road,...

Verschillende typen van tertiaire geosynclinalen in den Indischen Archipel Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..

The End of Sluiter’s Coral Reef at Krakatoa Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..
It is well known that before the famous eruption of August 1883 took place, the island Krakatoa consisted of three volcanoes, the basaltic volcano Rakata and the andesitic volcanoes Danan and Perbuwatan. With the great explosion of August 28th of that year Danan, Perbuwatan and the northwestern part of Rakata were entirely destroyed. Since then a coral reef began to grow on the Northwestern slope of the Rakata ruïn at a spot called Black Point (Zwarte Hoek), a place where the basaltic lava of Krakatoa is exposed.

De Koraalriffen van Emmahaven (W. Sumatra) Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..
In the bay of Emmahaven near Padang (W. Sumatra) is a small coral reef. On the North side of this reef a small, sandy island occurs called Pasir Ketjil. It has lately been surrounded by brick walls, besides which a stone pier has been built in a S.W. direction (cf. fig. 1, a map of 1899 and fig. 2 and 3, the present condition). Since the building of that pier, coral sand has accumulated against it on the S-side. This reef lacks shingle ramparts. From this situation of the sandy island with regard to the reef, and from the placing of the younger coral sand accumulations (A in fig. 3), it may be concluded that the maximal wind-effect is strongest from the direction of the open sea, about S.W. Data about the wind frequency kindly supplied by the director of...

Heterospira, a new foraminiferal genus from the Tertiary of Borneo Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..
In thinsections of tertiary limestones from Borneo I studied numerous specimens of a new genus of foraminifera showing an interesting and rather complicated structure. The material belongs to the Geological Survey of the Netherlands East Indies („Dienst van den Mijnbouw in Nederlandsch Indië”) at Bandoeng, Java. Syntypes 1) are in the palaeontological collection of the „Instituut voor Mijnbouwkunde” at Delft. My thanks are due to Mr. A.C. de Jongh, formerly director of the geological survey in the East Indies, who kindly lent me these rocks.

De Pretertiaire Historie van den Indischen Archipel Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..

The first days of the new submarine volcano near Krakatoa Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..
The geological history of the Krakatoa volcano, especially the eruption of 1883, is amply described in the great work “Krakatau” by R. D. M. Verheer (1885), the Report of the Krakatoa Committee (Royal Soc. London 1888) and in the publications of B. G. Escher (Handel. 1e Nederl. Indisch Natuurwet enschapp. Congres 1919). In the last named the history of the Krakatoa-volcano is clearly shown in a block diagram series, which Professor Escher kindly permitted me to reproduce here as text figure 1. Before the famous Krakatoa-eruption of August 1883 took place, there were three islands: Lang-eiland (Long island), Verlaten-eiland (Deserted island) and Krakatau (Krakatoa).

Über die obersenone Gattung Rhombodus einen durophagen Stachelrochen Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..

Madreporaria from the Togian Reefs (Gulf of Tomini, North-Celebes) Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..
INTRODUCTION The coral reefs of the Togian islands grow up as steep barrier reefs and atolls. Moreover small fringing reefs occur along the islands. The geological structure of the islands, as well as the history and morphology of the reefs are treated in a separate paper 1). I will here mention only one of the striking features of the reefs. The reefs are situated in a zone, famous for the unruffled calm and undisturbed quiet of the sea, because they are protected from the influence of both monsoons. In a curve from West to North they are sheltered against the North monsoon by the Northern arm of Celebes; on the South of this group the Eastern arm of Celebes breaks the influence of the South East monsoon, which, blowing across the Banda Sea is only...

Miocene corals from Flores (East Indies) Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..
Dr. Ph. H. Kuenen kindly entrusted me with a suite of corals collected by him on the island Flores during his cruise with the Expedition on board of H.M. „Willebrord Snellius”. The exact locality is North coast near Papang where the road Papang-Rioeng-Rawoe forkes, 550 m above sea level. Nine different species were collected. Among these is one new species, Fungophyllia millepunctata. Of one coral, a Porites, the species could not be identified with certainty, though it strongly resembles a Porites species from the Miocene Progo-beds of Java. From the other 7 corals the following data on their stratigraphical distribution are known.

2. Tertiary Foraminifera Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..
In his review of the palaeozoology of Java, K. Martin could in 1919, record 49 foraminifera from tertiary strata of Java, on the strength of a critical study of the existant literature, and especially on the strength of his own studies and knowledge of the above mentioned fossils (Bibl. 49). In composing the following list of the Foraminifera I have only been able to perform such a critical study for a few families. For the greater part, however, I have had to restrict myself to recording the results obtained by others, and even therein I have been obliged to restrict myself.

A new name for the foraminiferal genus Heterospira Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..
A short time ago I described a new foraminiferal genus from the Tertiary of Borneo 1). I gave this genus the name of Heterospira. Mr. P. H. Oehser of Washington drew my attention to the fact that E. Koken as early as 1896²) had used the name Heterospira for a genus of triassic gastropoda from Hallstatt. Therefore according to the international rules of zoölogical nomenclature, the name Heterospira for a foraminiferal genus being a homonym has to be rejected.

Madreporaria from the Bay of Batavia Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..
INTRODUCTION In the Bay of Batavia there are patch-reefs and cays in different stadia of development. Some are small reefs still rather deep below sea level, other reefs bear a small sand cay. On the larger coral sand islands vegetation has developed ; moreover shingle ramparts and a moat have come into existence. The islands and reefs considered in this paper are situated South of a line which may be thought passing from Cape Pasir towards the Island Edam, so forming a boundary between the reefs in the Bay of Batavia and the northern group of Thousand Islands („Duizend eilanden"). The author studied these reefs in some detail and the results were published as early as 1928 1). In that amply illustrated paper data and considerations may be found on...

Over Lithothamnia in het Maastrichtsche Tufkrijt Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..

A second species of Biplanispira from the Eocene of Borneo Naturalis
Umbgrove, J.H.F..
In 1928, when studying the genus Pellatispira 1), I found some sections of the foraminifer described below in a limestone from S.E. Borneo (no. 1446 B. 414). The foraminifer resembles Pellatispira in many respects, but the distal part of the test shows a different structure, consisting of a double arrangement of median chambers on either side of an equatorial system of pores. Because the material was insufficient I put it aside. Some time afterwards a more intense study was made possible, as another limestone from S.E. Borneo (no. 1408 B. 404) was crowded with the same interesting species. It was, however, not before now that I had the opportunity of finishing this study and to publish the results. I now describe this foraminifer as Biplanispira absurda....

Umbgrove, J.H.F..
The Coral Reefs of the Spermonde Archipelago (S. Celebes). 1. — The coral reefs of the Spermonde archipelago, West of Makassar (S. Celebes) are distributed over a submarine plateau, the so called Spermonde shelf, which to the landward side, gradually passes into the coastal plain of Makassar and Maros. To the East of Maros tertiary limestone mountains form the boundary of this plain; up till now we know Eocene and Miocene marine strata from these mountains. At the foot of these limestone mountains we find fossil coves about 30 meters above the present level of the sea, probably caused by a pleistocene abrasion and thus showing a pleistocene or postpleistocene negative shift of the strandline of about 30 meters. The coastal plain consists of volcanic...
