The subalpine and alpine flora of Mount Jaya (New Guinea): status and threats Naturalis
Utteridge, T.M.A.; Edwards, P.J..
The highest mountains in South-East Asia are in the Sudirman range of Indonesian New Guinea; the highest is Mt Jaya which rises to 4 884 m and is still partly glaciated. The geological history of the region has left it rich in mineral deposits and the alpine area is currently being mined for copper. In 1997 a project was initiated by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in conjunction with the mining companies Rio Tinto and PT-Freeport Indonesia, to study the region’s flora. An introduction to the region, including geology, glaciation and past exploration will be given, as well as the history and objectives of the Kew project. During the project, Kew made several collaborative expeditions to the area, as well as a database of all historical collections from Mt...

A new species of Maesa (Primulaceae-Maesoideae) from New Guinea Naturalis
Utteridge, T.M.A..
A new species of Maesa (Primulaceae-Maesoideae) is described from Indonesian New Guinea. Maesa megistophylla is unique in the genus in the combination of the very long elliptic leaves, and racemes with subsessile flowers. The species is illustrated, taxonomic affinities are discussed, and is assessed as Data Deficient according to the criteria of IUCN.

Revision of the genus Cyathostemma (Annonaceae) Naturalis
Utteridge, T.M.A..
The genus Cyathostemma Griff., occurring from SW China to NE Australia, is revised, and a total of ten species is recognised. One new species, C. siamensis, is described. The status of the genus Tetrapetalum Miq. is discussed and reduced, in part, to synonymy with Cyathostemma, and in part to Uvaria L. A key to taxa is given, with new descriptions and distribution maps.

Three new species and a new name in Southeast Asian Gomphandra (Stemonuraceae / Icacinaceae s.l.) Naturalis
Schori, M.; Utteridge, T.M.A..
Three new species of Gomphandra (Stemonuraceae / Icacinaceae s.l.) are described from Malesia, and a new name is proposed for a misidentified species. Gomphandra palustris is known from peat swamp forests in Borneo, Sarawak, G. halconensis is known from the Philippines, Mindoro, Mt Halcon, and G. conklinii from the Philippines, Ifugao Province, Banaue. Gomphandra rarinervis is offered as a new name for Stemonurus puberulus, which was incorrectly synonymised with G. papuana by Sleumer. This commonly collected taxon is known from Madang and Morobe Provinces in Papua New Guinea and does not overlap in distribution with G. papuana.

Large-scale patterns of plant diversity and conservation priorities in South East Asia Naturalis
Marsh, S.T.; Brummitt, N.A.; Kok, R.P.J. de; Utteridge, T.M.A..
In the absence of a complete floristic inventory, conservation priorities within South East Asia must often be based on incomplete knowledge or a rough approximation of diversity such as habitat cover. To help overcome this, a database containing distribution data for all 3 523 known flowering plant genera across 53 geo-political regions covering all of Indo-China, Malesia and the Pacific has been compiled from regional floras and herbarium specimens at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Our database is currently 85 % complete and has been used in this preliminary analysis to show the broad patterns of plant diversity and floristic relationships in the South East Asian region. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the floristic richness, at genus level...

A new species of Alphonsea (Annonaceae) from Peninsular Malaysia Naturalis
Turner, I.M.; Utteridge, T.M.A..
Alphonsea rugosa sp. nov. is described from eastern Peninsular Malaysia. It is similar to Alphonsea elliptica but has fruits that are dry wrinkled and glabrous rather than smooth and tomentose. A conservation assessment of Vulnerable based on collections from four locations is made.
