FACTORS INFLUENCING THE RESPONSES OF Tetranychus urticae Koch (ACARINA: TETRANYCHIDAE) TO THURINGIENSIN Agricultura Técnica
Vargas,Robinson; Chapman,Bruce; Penman,David R..
The effects of temperature, host plant, active ingredient mobility, surfactant, residue age and larval age on the response of Tetranychus urticae Koch to thuringiensin were evaluated in laboratory bioassays. T. urticae larvae were significantly more susceptible to thuringiensin at 13°C than at 28°C. A significantly different response of T. urticae larvae to thuringiensin residues was found on peach and apple leaves. Older T. urticae larvae were significantly more susceptible than younger larvae when exposed to thuringiensin residues. No systemic or translaminar effects of thuringiensin were detected; the leaf surface (upper or lower) and the addition of Silwet L-77 surfactant did not affect the efficacy of thuringiensin. The use of thuringiensin in spider...

TOXICITY OF THURINGIENSIN ON IMMATURE AND ADULT STAGES OF Tetranychus urticae KOCH AND Panonychus ulmi (KOCH) (ACARINA: TETRANYCHIDAE) Agricultura Técnica
Vargas,Robinson; Chapman,Bruce; Penman,David R..
The direct and residual toxicity of thuringiensin on different stages of Tetranychus urticae Koch and Panonychus ulmi (Koch), and the influence on T. urticae reproduction and population development were evaluated in laboratory bioassays. Direct toxicity was higher than residual toxicity to T. urticae for all life stages. Immature stages of T. urticae and P. ulmi were more susceptible to thuringiensin than adults. P. ulmi was more susceptible to thuringiensin than T. urticae. Fecundity of T. urticae was significantly reduced when females were exposed to residues for 2 days. Complete suppression of T. urticae population development was achieved when the F1 generation was exposed to thuringiensin residues, however, the level of suppression was concentration...

EFFECT OF THURINGIENSIN ON CUTICLE DEVELOPMENT OF IMMATURE STAGES OF Tetranychus urticae Koch. (ACARINA: TETRANYCHIDAE) Agricultura Técnica
Vargas,Robinson; Chapman,Bruce; Penman,David R..
The effect of thuringiensin on the ultrastructure of Tetranychus urticae Koch cuticle was studied using an transmission electron microscope (TEM). Thuringiensin was found to affect epicuticle synthesis in larvae, protonymphs and deutonymphs. Its disruptive effects on larval cuticle formation were observed from 12 h onwards, indicating that the effect of the exposure time of mites to thuringiensin is related to the stage of cuticle development. The results suggest that the effects of thuringiensin occur in a relatively short time.

Effect of Pollen from Different Plant Species on Development of Typhlodromus pyri (Sheuten) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Bermúdez,Paulina; Vargas,Robinson; Cardemil,Antonieta; López,Eugenio.
Typhlodromus pyri (Sheuten) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is a phytoseiid mite with a high potential in controlling the false Chilean mite (Brevipalpus chilensis Baker; Acari: Tenuipalpidae). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of different plant species pollen as a complementary food in the development of T. pyri when its prey is in low levels of availability. Mites were individually placed on black plastic boxes with pollen and maintained at a temperature of 26 ± 2 °C, 70 ± 5% relative humidity (RH), and a photoperiod of 16:8 h (L:D). Postembryonic development of T. pyri was studied in 11 pollen species, as well as in a mixed diet of Hirschfeldia incana (L.) and B. chilensis. Results show that H. incana was the only pollen in which there was no...

Biological parameters of Cydnodromus picanus and Phytoseiulus persimilis raised on the carmine spider mite, Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Acari: Phytoseiidae, Tetranychidae) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Tello,Víctor; Vargas,Robinson; Araya,Jaime; Cardemil,Antonieta.
The postembryonic development, consumption and life table parameters of Cydnodromus picanus Ragusa and Phytoseiulus persimilis (Athias-Henriot) were studied at 29.44 ± 1.47 °C and 42.35 ± 5.01% of RH with a photoperiod of 14:10 h (L:D) in order to evaluate the potential of these predators for feeding on the carmine spider mite Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisduval). Eggs, larvae and protonymphs of T cinnabarinus may be optimal food for C. picanus, which obtained survival rates of 100%, 97% and 93%, respectively, on them. The survival of P persimilis was around 6.7% with diets based on eggs, larvae and protonymphs, showing a high mortality level by dehydration when fed with eggs. The time of the postembryonic development was significantly shorter (p <...
