Notes on oriental Vespinae, including some species from China and Japan (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) Naturalis
Vecht, J. van der.
Since the publication of my revision of the Vespinae of the Indo-Malayan and Papuan areas (1957), I have had the opportunity to study a considerable amount of additional material of this subfamily. Part of this material originated from the areas treated in my previous paper, and in so far as the following notes refer to these specimens, they may be regarded as a first supplement to that revision. The present paper, however, also contains some information on the Vespinae occurring in India, China, and Japan. At first I had hoped to round off my studies of the Vespinae by preparing a more or less complete revision of the Vespa species of the Asiatic continent, but so far it has proved impossible to accumulate sufficient material for this purpose. The males...

A perliminary revision of the Oriental species of the genus Ceratina (Hymenoptera, Apidae) Naturalis
Vecht, J. van der.
The Oriental bees of the genus Ceratina Latr. are difficult to identify. Until now our knowledge of these insects consisted mainly of a considerable number (about 90) of isolated descriptions, scattered through several scientific journals. Most of these descriptions are based on colour characters and although these are certainly not without taxonomic value, they must be used with great care on account of their intra-specific variability. The structural and sculptural characters which are much more reliable for distinguishing the species have thus far not received sufficient attention. There exist a few keys, dealing with the species occurring in certain parts of the region, but none of these contains more than 11 species and the characters used are often...

Hymenoptera Sphecoidea Fabriciana Naturalis
Vecht, J. van der.
INTRODUCTION In the early years of systematic entomology Johann Christian Fabricius (1745-1808) described an enormous number of insects, including several hundreds of Hymenoptera, from various parts of the world. His descriptions are generally short and incomplete, the classification of the species is often unsatisfactory, and the author himself frequently misidentified species which he had described in previous works. His work has thus raised a considerable number of problems, which in most cases can be solved only by a study of the typical specimens. Workers in some insect groups have realised this at an early date, and by a detailed study of the Fabrician collections they have made important contributions to our knowledge of many doubtful species. A...

A catalogue of the genera of the Vespidae (Hymenoptera) Naturalis
Vecht, J. van der; Carpenter, J.M..
A comprehensive generic catalogue of the Vespidae is presented. New nomenclatural changes include synonymy of Alastoroides Saussure, 1856, with Paralastor Saussure 1856; Araucodynerus Willink, 1968, with Hypodynerus Saussure 1855; and Paranortonia Bequaert, 1940, with Parazumia Saussure, 1855. Paravespa Bell, 1936, non Radoszkowski, 1886, is a synonym of Eustenogaster van der Vecht, 1966.

That part dealt with the morphology and the distribution of the species which are distinguished by having a more or less distinct raised carina separating the anterior and...

The Rhynchium species of the Philippine Islands (Hymenoptera, Eumenidae) Naturalis
Vecht, J. van der.
It has generally been accepted that the Philippine Islands are inhabited by only a single species of the Eumenid genus Rhynchium. In Miss Baltazar's valuable catalogue (1966) it is listed as a subspecies, atrum Saussure, of R. haemorrhoidale (Fabr.). However, when in 1963 I examined an extensive collection of Eumenidae from these islands in the U.S. National Museum, Washington ), the available material of this genus proved to consist of two very similar, though readily separable, species. The question thus arose, to which of these should be applied the name atrum Saussure. This species was described from "Les Indes Orientales, les Iles de la Sonde, la Nouvelle Guinée [Warou]. (Musée de Paris)". Unfortunately I did not find any specimens of this certainly...

The geographic variation of Polistes (Megapolistes subg. n.) rothneyi Cameron Naturalis
Vecht, J. van der.
The species discussed in this paper has been generally misidentified by previous authors. BINGHAM (1897) and DOVER (1929, 1931) confused it with the closely related P. hebraeus (F.) (a junior synonym of P. olivaceus (DeGeer)). Bequaert correctly separated this species from its close relatives (P. olivaceus and P. jadwigae Dalla Torre), but unfortunately he did not publish his conclusions. Specimens in various collections have been labelled by him as P. jokahamae Radoszkowski, 1887, a name that has also been used by Japanese authors (SONAN, 1943; TSUNEKI, 1957, 1962; YOSHIKAWA, 1962; mostly emended as “yokohamae”). The original description of P. jokahamae, however, does not apply to the present species and leaves no doubt that Radoszkowski’s species must be...

The East-Asiatic and Indo-Australian species of Polybioides Buysson and Parapolybia Saussure (HYM., Vespidae) Naturalis
Vecht, J. van der.
In 1913 A. von Schulthess published under the title "Parapolybia Saussure" a revision of the Old World social wasps which in general appearance are similar to certain species of the American genus Polybia. Only a few months later R. du Buysson described some new species of "Polybia" from Asia and created a new genus Polybioides for one African and two Oriental species. Apart from the treatment of two African species of Polybioides in Bequaert's excellent work on the Vespidae of the Belgian Congo (1918; see also Bequaert, 1922) this group of wasps has since then received little attention. A detailed study of the Oriental wasps which at different times have been described or recorded as Polybia has led me to the conclusion that many of these belong to the...

On Eumenes Arcuatus (Fabricius) and some Allied Indo-australian wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) Naturalis
Vecht, J. van der.
In a study on the variation of Polistes and other Vespidae, K. Zimmermann (Zeitschr. Morph. Oek. Tiere, 22, 1931, pp. 173-230) concluded that the variation of the Indo-Australian Eumenes arcuatus (Fabricius) differs in a remarkable way from that of several European species of wasps. The geographic variation of the palaearctic Polistes, Odynerus and Eumenes was found to be strongly influenced by external factors: black pigments increase in cold and humid environments, whereas the yellow pigments dominate in hot and dry areas. According to Zimmermann, there is considerable individual variation in this respect in the palaearctic region, and no constant geographic races have developed here. On the other hand, the Indo-Australian Eumenes arcuatus occurs in a...

On some Hymenoptera from the collection of Guerin-Méneville in the Leiden museum Naturalis
Vecht, J. van der.
About thirty years ago, while studying the Sphecinae of the Leiden Museum, I found two species of Sphex, described by F. E. Guérin-Méneville, represented here by specimens originating from the collection of this author. A note on these species, Sphex lanierii Guérin and Sphex paulinieri Guérin, was published a few years ago (van der Vecht, 1954). Recently I came across a few more specimens from the same origin, and this has stimulated me to make a thorough search in the entire collection of Hymenoptera in this Museum. Since this work has led to the discovery of a few types which have generally been regarded as lost, the results appear to be well worth publication. According to Horn & Kahle (1935-7), the Hymenoptera of GuérinMéneville, who died in 1874,...

The cerceris species of Java (Hymenoptera Sphecoidea) Naturalis
Vecht, J. van der.
The genus Cerceris Latreille contains several hundreds of species and is represented in all zoological regions, in temperate areas as well as in the tropics and subtropics. In 1942 Arnold stated that about 650 specific names had been proposed in this genus; since then another 125 new species have been described. The species of certain parts of the world are well known. In recent years De Beaumont (1950, 1951, 1958) and others have published some important revisions of the species of Europe and North Africa, while Tsuneki (1961) studied the species of North Eastern Asia (for further references see pp. 19-21 of Tsuneki's paper). The Ethiopian Cerceris have been monographed by Brauns (1926) and by Arnold (1931, 1942). The species of the Nearctic region have...

A review of the new genus Anischnogaster in the Papuan region (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) Naturalis
Vecht, J. van der.
The Stenogastrinae, a group of subsocial wasps currently regarded as a subfamily of the Vespidae (Richards, 1962: 4), have a remarkable distribution. Most of the species are inhabitants of the Oriental region, where their range extends from Southern India eastward to the Philippine Islands, Celebes, Sumba and Flores. No Stenogastrinae have ever been collected in the Moluccas, but the group is well represented in the Papuan area, occurring throughout New Guinea and in the neighbouring islands of Waigeo, Misool and Aru. From 1831 to 1913 nine species have been described from this area, but from examination of the types we have learned that only six of these may be regarded as good species. Various collections made in New Guinea during the last forty years...
