In view of the need'for research on the practical use of the brine shrimp Artemia salina in aquaaulture, our research team at the State University of Ghent (Belgium) is studying the following aspects : 1- The automatized mass-culturing of larvae. 2- The controlled production of cysts. 3- The comparative study of geographical strains. 4- The study of the metabolism of the cysts. |

Artemia cysts have been collected from different saltworks and natural salt lakes in Tunisia. The cyst material was processed and used for the following characterization analyses: cyst and naupliar biometrics, cyst hatching characteristics, fatty acid pattern of the nauplii, nutritional value of the nauplii for mysid shrimp, naupliar growth rate and temperature resistance, mode of reproduction, and characterization of sibling species. The cross-breeding tests and cyst biometrics reveal that only Artemia tunisiana occurs in Tunisia. Although quality improvements may be expected through improved harvesting, Tunisian Artemia have acceptable hatching characteristics and are a good food for mysid shrimp.... |

The possibility to develop a routine batch culturing method for the production of cysts has been examined at laboratory scale. The influence of abiotic and biotic parameters on the mode of reproduction has been studied and the following facts have been noted: - cyclic low oxygen tensions induce haemoglobin synthesis with subsequent shift of the mode of reproduction from ovoviviparity to oviparity; - addition of ferric-EDTA stimulates haemoglobin synthesis;- a correlation exists between the color of the animals and the type of reproduction; - neither the food source nor the water salinity per se control the mode of reproduction. However, cysts produced at low salinity appear to have a low hatchability. The effect on the hatchability of... |

Automatization in the food distribution is necessary for the controlled culturing of filter feeders in high densities. Numerous devices have been described to distribute specific quantities of food suspension at preset time intervals (cf. review in Kinne, 1977). The number of systems which, however, add food whenever a preset critical turbidity of the medium is exceeded are rather limited. They furthermore are either very expensive (sophisticated equipment) or have to be cleaned very often (cf. review in Sorgeloos et al., 1976). We tried to simplify the technological complexity of the existing systems and developed an inexpensive, automatic, self cleaning food distributor. This apparatus measures the turbidity of the culturing medium which is pumped into a... |
