Purification and improvement of local non-glutinous rice is a sub-project under the Rainfed Lowland Rice Breeding in Southern Region aim s to improve local rice varieties with high yielding potential and specific good grain qualities for niche markets. The experiment s were conducted by using randomized complete block design with four replications. Inter-station yield trials were located in Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pattani and Krabi rice research centers during 2010-2012. Regional yield trials were experimented in Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkla during 2011-2012 wet season. Pattani Rice Research center is the main center of Rice Department for developing the rice seeds in 5 special provinces of the southern parts based on southern rice seed research project. The study that aimed to investigate areas and need of rice seeds of farmers found that 75 % of local rice seeds were needed by farmers. Two most desirable rice seeds delete in the southern parts that studied by Pattani Rice Research Center Were Seebukabntang Rice Seed (PTNC09001) and Hawm Kradang-Ngah Rice seed (PTNC09002-59). This research aimed to access farmer participatory breeding in selecting the local upland rice varieties for desirable agronomic traits, good cooking and eating grain characteristics. The research carried out in the land reform area of amphoes Mueang, Lamae, Thung Tako in Chumphon province. The experiment comprised 12 upland rice varieties, 11 experimental lines and 1 standard check, by using the Randomized Complete Block design with 4 replications. Results indicated that farmers had selected Samdeaun, Phukhaotong, Nahngkruan, Lebnok and Dawkkham varieties for desirable agronomic traits with reasonable uniform panicle, good tillering ability, long panicle, many secondary branches, large and heavy grains. Integrated pest management trials were conducted in order to test pest management practices in Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla provinces during 2011-2013 wet seasons. The data on population of insect pests, natural enemies, percent damage of diseases, percent damage of animal pests, weed species with wet weight, grain yield per rai, input costs, price of paddy and net benefit were collected comparing to the farmers’ practice trials. The results showed that the integrated pest management trials having more natural enemies than the farmers’ practice trials. Hawm Gra Dang Ngah rice variety was collected from Tak Bai district, Narathiwat province. A promising line, PTNC09002-59 was selected as a uniform best plant type from the 59th row of 200 rows. It is a photoperiod – sensitive, non-glutinous rice which flowering occurs in mid February. It has 131 cm height and 10 panicles per hill. An average grain yield under intra-station yield trial (Pattani) was 501 kilograms per rai. Paddy hull is straw-colored and grain shape is slender. Brown rice is red and the grain length is 6.33 mm. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) trial sets were conducted at Phatthalung, Naknon Si Thammarat and Songkhla provinces from wet season year 2011 to wet season year 2013 included 5 crops in 3 years. The data population of insect pests and natural enemies, percent damage of diseases, percent damage of animal pests, species and wet weigh of weeds, yield per rai, costs, price of yield and net benefit were collected and compared with Farmer Practice (FP) trial.
