Studies in Annonaceae. IV. A taxonomic revision of Tetrameranthus R.E. Fries Naturalis
Westra, L.Y.Th..
The small genus Tetrameranthus R.E. Fries, occurring in the Amazon region, is revised. Two new species are described, in addition to the three already known. Available data still indicate that this genus belongs in Annonaceae, but takes up an isolated position within that family.

Nyctaginaceae Naturalis
Westra, L.Y.Th.; Stoffers, A.L..
Herbs, shrubs or trees with abnormal secondary growth. Leaves often opposite or subopposite to alternate, simple. Stipules absent. Flowers cymosely arranged in panicles or corymbs, rarely in umbels or subcapitate, hermaphrodite or unisexual, commonly 5-merous, subtended by a variable number of bractlets which may be small, mostly, or large and conspicuous as in the well-known cultivated genus Bougainvillea, sometimes forming a gamophyllous involucre as in Mirabilis. Perianth single, gamophyllous, often corolla-like, the lower part enclosing the ovary and accrescent with the fruit. Stamens essentially in 1 or 2 whorls, but often irregular in number due to reduction or multiplication; filaments often filiform, more or less united at the base; anthers...

A taxonomic survey of Guatteria section Mecocarpus including the genera Guatteriopsis and Guatteriella p.p. (Annonaceae) Naturalis
Maas, P.J.M.; Westra, L.Y.Th..
This paper deals with a group of species of the Neotropical genus Guatteria (Annonaceae) which are characterized by leaves with tiny warts (verruculae) on both surfaces and by elongate and short-stipitate monocarps (i.e., the length of the monocarp body surpassing the length of the stipe). These species were placed by Fries in Guatteria sect. Mecocarpus (Fries 1939) (the name derives from Ancient Greek μηκων = Poppy and καρπος = fruit: fruit resembling that of Papaver species). All occur in South America, none having been found elsewhere so far. Although there is much doubt nowadays about the taxonomic significance of Fries’s sections, we maintain sect. Mecocarpus at present for convenience’s sake. Additionally, the former genus Guatteriopsis, united with...

Revision of Oxandra (Annonaceae) Naturalis
Junikka, L.; Maas, P.J.M.; Maas-van de Kamer, H.; Westra, L.Y.Th..
A taxonomic revision is given of the Neotropical genus Oxandra (Annonaceae). Within the genus 27 species are recognized, 4 of which are new to science. Most of the species are occurring in tropical South America, whereas a few (6) are found in Mexico and Central America and two in the West Indies (Greater and Lesser Antilles). A key to all species is provided. The treatment includes chapters about the history of the genus and morphology. All species are fully described, including full synonymy, notes on distribution and ecology, field observations (when available), vernacular names (when given), and mostly short notes about relationships of the species concerned. For each species a distribution map is made. At the end of the revision a complete list of...

Studies in Annonaceae. II. A monograph of the genus Anaxagorea A. St. Hil. Part 2 Naturalis
Maas, P.J.M.; Westra, L.Y.Th..
Anaxagorea A. St. Hil. is distinct from other Annonaceae by the fruits. Unlike most members of the family, it occurs both in the Neotropics and in the Palaeotropics. Several chapters are devoted to a.o. morphology, anatomy, karyology, palynology, chemistry, pollination and seed dispersal, geography and ecology, economic uses and vernacular names, partly compiled from existing literature or collectors’ notes, partly as a result of own investigations. A cladistic analysis of intrageneric relationships is given. The taxonomic part provides descriptions, synonyms (nomina nuda are not included), dichotomous keys. For practical reasons, separate keys are given for neotropical and palaeotropical taxa. For neotropical species, a synoptic key is also provided....

Revision of the Neotropical genus Pseudoxandra (Annonaceae) Naturalis
Maas, P.J.M.; Westra, L.Y.Th..
A taxonomic revision is made of the Neotropical genus Pseudoxandra. This genus forms part of the Cremastosperma alliance which consists of Bocageopsis, Cremastosperma, Ephedranthus, Klarobelia, Malmea, Mosannona, Onychopetalum, Oxandra, Pseudephedranthus, Pseudomalmea, Pseudoxandra, Ruizodendron, and Unonopsis, all from the Neotropics. Within Pseudoxandra 22 species are recognized, four of which were described quite recently by the first author (Maas et al., 1986). Fourteen species are described here as new. Two dichotomous keys are provided, one for the genera of the Cremastosperma alliance, and the other for the species of Pseudoxandra. The species treatments include descriptions, geographical and ecological notes, distribution maps, synonymy, taxonomic...

Studies in Annonaceae. IX. New species from the Neotropics and miscellaneous notes Naturalis
Maas, P.J.M.; Heusden, E.C.H. van; Koek-Noorman, J.; Setten, A.K. van; Westra, L.Y.Th..
This paper follows upon an earlier paper in the series “Studies in Annonaceae” (Maas et al. 1986). Twelve new species are described, viz. 2 in Duguetia, 1 in Ephedranthus, 5 in Guatteria, 2 in Hornschuchia, 1 in Tetrameranthus, and 1 in Unonopsis. A new combination is made in Enicosanthellum. Some amendments and additions to the revision of Tetrameranthus (Westra 1985), including an updated key, are given. Monocarpia euneura Miq. appears to have priority over M. marginalis (R. Scheffer) James Sincl. Additional collections have been made of the rare species Bocagea longepedunculata Martius, Xylopia crinita R.E. Fries, and Xylopia excellens R.E. Fries. Attention is drawn to several recent collections from Bahia, Brazil, which are perhaps referable to...

Studies in Annonaceae. VII. New species from the Neotropics and miscellaneous notes Naturalis
Maas, P.J.M.; Heusden, E.C.H. van; Koek-Noorman, J.; Setten, A.K. van; Westra, L.Y.Th..
Several species in neotropical genera are described, viz. 1 in Bocageopsis, 2 in Cremastosperma, 1 in Hornschuchia, 1 in Oxandra, 4 in Pseudoxandra, and 2 in Unonopsis. Cremastosperma anomalum R.E. Fries is transferred to Malmea. Cremastosperma pacificum R.E. Fries is recorded for Panama for the first time. Xylopia ulei Diels, X. neglecta (O. Kuntze) R.E. Fries, and X. intermedia R.E. Fries are brought into synonymy with X. benthamii R.E. Fries, X. parviflora Spruce, and X. sericea A. St.Hil. respectively. The African Xylopia parviflora (A. Rich.) Benth., non Spruce, now has to bear the name X. longipetala De Wild, et T. Durand.

Studies in Annonaceae V. Additional notes on Anaxagorea A. St. Hil Naturalis
Maas, P.J.M.; Westra, L.Y.Th.; Koek-Noorman, J..
After completion of the monograph of Anaxagorea, a number of new collections were studied and annotated. Among this material there appeared to be a new species from Venezuela, at the same time the first true rheophyte in Annonaceae. The rare and hitherto incompletely known A. silvatica has now turned up from the state of Espirito Santo, Brazil. The flower of this species is described for the first time. New records are mentioned insofar as they add to previously existing information.

Studies in Annonaceae. VIII. A cladistic analysis of Tetrameranthus Naturalis
Koek-Noorman, J.; Zandee, M.; Westra, L.Y.Th..
The small genus Tetrameranthus (five species) stands isolated within the Annonaceae. A cladistic analysis was carried out using macromorphological characters in order to find possible apomorphies and to attempt a phylogenetic reconstruction. In the “best” cladograms there appear two subsets, one formed by T. duckei, T. macrocarpus, and T. pachycarpus, the other by T. laomae and T. umbellatus. Both are supported by a number of apomorphic character states. Any other conclusions remain speculative.

Revision of the Neotropical genera Bocageopsis, Onychopetalum, and Unonopsis (Annonaceae) Naturalis
Maas, P.J.M.; Westra, L.Y.Th.; Vermeer, M..
(Annonaceae). The closeness of these three genera was expressed by Fries when he placed them in his (informal) Unonopsis group (Fries, 1959), and the close relationship is supported by more recent phylogenetic research as well. Four species are recognized in Bocageopsis and two species in Onychopetalum. Unonopsis is by far the largest of the three genera with close to 50 species, of which no less than 23 species are here described as new. One species (Unonopsis umbilicata) had to be shelved as insufficiently known for lack of data, and another, obviously new, species from Colombia is too incomplete and is described provisionally as Unonopsis spec. A. Several keys are provided, one for the genera and one each for the species of Bocageopsis and...
