The naturally large annual fluctuation in the number of flowering individuals of Anacamptis pyramidalis in the water catchment- and conservation area the „Noordhollands Duinreservaat” tends to obscure the alternative possibility that this species, which was formerly locally very abundant, is at present severely threatened by drought, and now is almost extinct. The author argues that this, as well as the depauperation of the whole dune flora, is caused directly and indirectly by the excessive withdrawal of the groundwater. |

The genus Solena Lour. is redefined, and its 3 species and 1 subspecies are keyed out and described: S. amplexicaulis occurs in S India, S. heterophylla, with 2 subspecies is widespread, but does not occur in S India, and S. umbellata (Klein ex Willd.) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, comb. nov., occurs in S India and Sri Lanka. The status of S. heterophylla subsp. napaulensis (Ser.) W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes, comb. & stat. nov. needs further study as this subspecies is very similar to the more widespread subsp. heterophylla, but it is distinct by sigmoid thecae. Solena amplexicaulis is taxonomically more distinct from the other two species of Solena. In southern India Kedrostis foetidissima much resembles Solena in general habit, especially by the more... |

A comparison of the structure of the flowers of various genera of the tribe Passifloraceae-Passifloreae supported the view of staminodial origin of the disk. The East African genus Schlechterina is kept separate from the West African genus Crossostemma. The genus Efulensia from Equatorial Africa is recognized beside the Madagascan genus Deidamia. Revised key to the genera of the Passifloreae, together with short descriptions. |

The members of tribe Passifloreae of the Passifloraceae are assumed to be originally all tendril-climbers. They have essentially axillary cymose inflorescences, and the vegetative ramification occurs always through the accessory bud. In tribe Paropsieae and Flacourtiaceae (mostly shrubs or trees, no tendril-climbers) the inflorescences are axillary, most likely essentially racemose, and the vegetative ramification is mostly through the axillary bud. The tendril-climbing neotropical genus Ancistrothyrsus appeared to belong to Passifloreae. Though the tribe Paropsieae remains to occupy an intermediate position between Passifloraceae and Flacourtiaceae, they can best be classified with the Passifloraceae. A new key is proposed for the distinction of both... |

‘Blang’ is the Gayo name for the extensive, open, grassy, lowland savanna land of their area in Aceh, N Sumatra. By analogy, the open areas with heath-like vegetation high in the mountains are called ‘mountain blang’. There are two somewhat intergrading types: a wet and a dry one. They are believed to have been caused by regularly burning since immemorial times by hunters, but our explanation is that they have (at least largely) developed for edaphic reasons, i.e. are due to prevailing climatic conditions on very poor, leached-out and almost impermeable kaolinitic soils. Their extension was possibly enlarged by occasional frost and burning, which may account for the sometimes, but not at all always, sharp demarcation with the surrounding stunted forest.... |

As compared with the treatment in the Flora of Java (Backer in Backer & Bakhuizen van den Brink, 1963) with 8 species, a recent review of the genus Trichosanthes in Java resulted in the acceptance of 10 species for this island. Important changes are: the name T. trifolia has to be replaced by a later species name, T. wawrae Cogn.; T. anguina is a variety of T. cucumerina [T. cucumerina L. var. anguina (L.) Haines]; the name T. bracteata as used in the Flora of Java appeared to represent three other different species: T. tricuspidata Lour., T. quinquangulata A. Gray, and T. pubera Blume; and T. sumatrana Cogn., never recorded before, appeared to occur in Java. |

On October 1st, 1993 Professor Dr. Hermann Otto Sleumer died at the age of 87, after a short illness. His ashes have been interred at Liederbach (near Kirchberg), Germany. Dr. Sleumer had been our colleague at the Rijksherbarium and eminent contributor to Flora Malesiana for many years. He generously shared his vast knowledge and experience with many of us. For younger botanists the many anecdotes and intimate stories he indulged in telling about colleagues he had known, especially from the Englerian circles in Berlin, were always an enriching and entertaining experience. |

With the death of Andre (‘Dok’) Kostermans, at the age of 88, a truly extraordinary personality has passed away. Dok had bravely borne the inconvenience of an increasing number of ailments associated with high age, such as poor eyesight, and had just recovered from a broken hip when his heart condition (angina pectoris) once more became acute. He passed away on 10 July, 1994 in a hospital in Jakarta where he had been transported one day before from his residence at Pasir Muncang, Gadok, some 15 km out of Bogor. His remains have been interred in the small historical cemetery within the Kebun Raya, by special permission of the Government of Indonesia. Kostermans can be ranked as one of the most important post-war Southeast Asian botanists and was the leading... |

During a precursory study in the genus Saraca it became evident that the number of fertile stamens and the size and degree of persistency of the bracteoles are major characters in the delimitation of the species. The genus extends from India and Ceylon to S.W. China and Tonkin, and as far east as to Celebes. The Celebes material (4 collections) was found to represent a species new to science. In the group with 6—8(—10) stamens, and with small (2—8 mm long) bracteoles, of which the Indian material was hitherto mostly referred to Saraca indica L., it appeared that two species are concerned, viz.: I. Bracteoles erect, clasping the pedicel, persistent. India, Ceylon, E. Pakistan, Burma west of the Irrawaddy River; otherwise cultivated. Fig. 1A Saraca asoca... |

In this volume the author concentrates on the comparative study of tropical flowers. He gives a practical approach (see Introduction, page 3) to recognize tropical flowers at three levels: a) Organization (‘Bauplan’), with emphasis on history and macroevolution (see Chapter 2); b) Construction (‘Gestalt’), i.e. architecture (see Chapter 3); and c) Mode, with emphasis on ecology and microevolution (see Chapters 4 & 5). Its scope is the understanding or biological interpretation of characters and character variation of flowers for the phylogenetic reconstruction of the angiosperms at these levels. The author claims that knowledge of the phylogenetic history and of the interactions between animals and plants may be of vital importance for the evaluation... |

In this paper an account is given of all names in the genus Myristica Gronov. for New Guinea, including 71 new species, subspecies or varieties and 4 new names either by new combination or new rank. Sinclair (1968) accepted 40 species names with 7 varieties, Foreman (1974, 1978) admitted 45 names (38 species and 8 varieties). In the present census I have 95 species and 31 taxa of infraspecific rank, reflecting a more refined species definition as well as the intensified field collecting of the last decades. A key is given, based on male and female flowering and fruiting specimens. |
