Protective effects of lycopene on oxidative stress, proliferation and autophagy in iron supplementation rats Biol. Res.
Liu,Chongbin; Wang,Rui; Zhang,Bo; Hu,Chen; Zhang,Hong.
Lycopene is common in diet and known for its antioxidant activities. However, the impact of lycopene on iron metabolism is poorly investigated. In this study, we hypothesize that lycopene can prevent iron-mediated oxidative stress, proliferation and autophagy in liver and use a rat model of nutritional iron supplementation to confirm its intervention in these defence mechanisms. We found that iron supplementation induced cell proliferation predominantly in non parenchymal cells compared with hepatocytes, but not apoptosis. In addition, iron was accumulated within the hepatic lysosomes where it triggered autophagy as evidenced by the formation of autophagic vesicles detected by LC3-B staining. Iron supplementation also induced morphologic alterations of the...

Role of hyaluronic acid and laminin as serum markers for predicting significant fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B BJID
Li,Feng; Zhu,Chang-Lai; Zhang,Hong; Huang,Hua; Wei,Qun; Zhu,Xiang; Cheng,Xiao-Yang.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of serum HA and LN as serum markers for predicting significant fibrosis in CHB patients. METHODS: Serum HA and LN levels of 87 patients with chronic hepatitis B and 19 blood donors were assayed by RIA. Liver fibrosis stages were determined according to the Metavir scoring-system. The diagnostic performances of all indexes were evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. RESULTS: Serum HA and LN concentrations increased significantly with the stage of hepatic fibrosis, which showed positive correlation with the stages of liver fibrosis (HA: r = 0.875, p < 0.001; LN: r = 0.610, p < 0.001). There were significant differences of serum HA and LN levels...

Serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae causing noninvasive diseases in a Children's Hospital, Shanghai BJID
Pan,Fen; Han,Lizhong; Kong,Jing; Wang,Chun; Qin,Huihong; Xiao,Shuzhen; Zhu,Junying; Zhang,Hong.
Background: Streptococcus pneumoni ae, which cause noninvasive pneumococcal diseases, severely impair children's health. This study analyzed serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance of S. pneumoni ae from January 2012 to December 2012 in a Children's Hospital, Shanghai. Methods: A total of 328 pneumococcal isolates were serotyped by multiplex sequential PCR and/or capsule-quellung reaction. The minimum inhibitory concentrations for 11 antimi- crobial agents were determined by broth microdilution method. Results: Among 328 strains, 19F (36.3%), 19A (13.4%), 6A (11.9%), 23F (11.0%), 14 (5.8%), 6B (5.2%), and 15B/C (4.3%) were the most common serotypes. The coverage rates of 7-, 10-, and 13-valent conjugate vaccines (PCV7, PCV10, and PCV13) were...

Recurrent pulmonary mucormycosis after lobectomy in a non-smoking patient without predisposing risk factors BJID
Zhang,Lu; Tian,Xinlun; Wang,Peng; Zhang,Hong; Feng,Ruie.
Pulmonary mucormycosis is a very rare clinical condition in patients without underlying risk factors. A limited number of cases have been reported in predominantly elderly patients; history of smoking appears to be a common feature. A case of non-smoking male who developed pulmonary mucormycosis with the longest reported follow-up is presented. In addition, this is also the first reported case with disease recurrence after lobectomy (two years) in an immunocompetent host. Treatment with an additional lobectomy and amphotericin B was successful in this patient.

Lichen planus with multiple system involvement including the mouth, vagina, urethra, and scalp: a case report BJMBR
Mi,Lan; Zhang,Hong; Zhang,Dai; Zhang,Miao.
This is a case report of lichen planus (LP) with multiple system involvement. A 35-year-old female patient was admitted in November 2014 with a 5-year history of painful/difficult sexual intercourse and loss of oral mucosa, and an 8-year history of focal hair loss. Earlier, the patient had been unable to adhere to corticosteroid therapy because of severe adverse side effects. In September 2014, labia minora mucosa defects and stricture of the urethral orifice (with dysuria), vaginal orifice, and vagina were identified. Biopsy was performed and a diagnosis of erosive LP was made. The patient was treated with an oral immunosuppressant (cyclosporine A) and urethral/vaginal dilatation. Urine flow rate and sex life were improved after 6 months and she...

Endophytic fungus Purpureocillium sp. A5 protect mangrove plant Kandelia candel under copper stress BJM
Gong,Bin; Liu,Guixiang; Liao,Rquan; Song,Jingjing; Zhang,Hong.
Abstract Mangrove is an important ecosystem in the world. Mangrove ecosystems have a large capacity in retaining heavy metals, and now they are usually considered as sinks for heavy metals. However, the mechanism of why the soil of mangrove ecosystems can retain heavy metal is not certain. In this research, endophytic fungus Purpureocillium sp. A5 was isolated and identified from the roots of Kandelia candel. When this fungus was added, it protected the growth of K. candel under Cu stress. This can be illustrated by analyzing chlorophyll A and B, RWC and WSD to leaves of K. candel. Purpureocillium sp. A5 reduces uptake of Cu in K. candel and changes the pH characterization of soil. Furthermore, A5 increase the concentration of Cu complexes in soil, and it...
