The interannual variability of the Kuroshio Current intrusion into the South China Sea is investigated using a combination of satellite remote sensing data and in situ measurements. This research was conducted as part of the Asian Seas International Acoustic EXperiment (ASIAEX). The circulation of the South China Sea has been studied for years and is predominantly wind-forced by the northeast winter and southwest summer monsoons. There remains some uncertainty to the interannual nature of the circulation and the effect of Kuroshio intrusions on mesoscale features in the northeast South China Sea. Satellite observations of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Sea Surface Height Anomalies (SSHA) from... |

Global warming projections using a range of climate models included in the IPCC 4th assessment report (AR4) suggest the oceans will warm, the stratification of the upper ocean will increase and the ventilation of the ocean interior will change. These physical changes will impact dissolved oxygen levels in the ocean. Using a global warming projection from the CSIRO (Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Research Administration) climate model linked to a simple ocean biogeochemical model I investigated how dissolved oxygen levels in the ocean interior change under global warming. The climate simulations project the low oxygen regions like the eastern equatorial Pacific will expand. By the end of the century it is projected that the volume of hypoxic water... |

A direct radiative transfer model, 478 radiosondes complimented by the cloud liquid water content profiles and the underlying surface temperatures and emissivities were used to simulate the brightness temperatures T Bs over the Marginal Ice Zone at ADEOS-II AMSR and Aqua AMSR-E frequencies. The precipitable water V varied from 0.63 to 18.5kg/m², the total cloud liquid water content Q<=0.25kg/m² and SST£1°C. The mean experimental values of emissivity and its fluctuations for several types of the first-year ice at ice temperature of 263 to 271K were used in a model. The sea surface emissivity was computed taking into account wind action. 10 values of ice concentration C uniformly distributed from 0.0 to 1.0 were selected for each radiosonde. The... |

This is a review on some biological and ecological characteristics of the early life stages of myctophids that exemplify their adaptations to coastal upwelling zones and oceanic nearby areas. The approach has been, however, not to make an exhaustive list of all possible research subjects but, in a more pragmatic way, a) to identify relevant aspects that can be approached with currently available methods in the region and, b) through examples of studies published nationally and regionally, to stimulate future research in larval ecology in the Humboldt Current. Three major themes were assessed: taxonomy and systematics, population ecology and reproductive strategies and, ecophysiology of the early life stages. Among the former, we detected a lack of... |

An extensive spatial survey metal content to study the spatial distribution of Cu, Pb and Zn concentration in nearshore waters of San Jorge Bay, along the coast of Antofagasta City, Chile was carried out located near the Atacama desert, which represent the largest populated urban settlement in northern Chile (~ 260,000 inhabitants). The coastal zone of this area is under an intensive use as discharge location of pollutants of different sources. Dissolved Cu varies between 0.97 to 1.65 mug l-1, in the southern part of the study area and in front of an industrial discharge, respectively. The dissolved Pb shows a narrow concentration range (0.019 to 0.029 mug l-1) and Zn content varies between 1.7 mug l-1 in the northern part of the study area to 2.0 mug l-1,... |

There is scarce basic biological data on native freshwater fish species from Chile and next to zero on growth, gonad development and reproduction, which are critical for the purposes of the conservation of their natural populations. Seasonal analysis of sub-individual (oocyte development) and population (length frequency, growth rates) endpoints in Trichomycterus areolatus and Percilia gillissi were evaluated from February 2007 to January 2008. Oocyte development has a marked seasonality for P. gillissi, with mature eggs in October and declining frequency of mature oocytes into January. For T. areolatus we found some mature eggs in July, with highest number of mature eggs in October, coincident with previous data on maximum gonad size. Both species showed... |

The demand for reliable information on wave conditions, in particular at coastal sites, is increasing. WorldWaves is a newly completed software package, developed by Fugro OCEANOR with funding from industry and within the framework of various European Commission sponsored contracts, notably EnviWave. The system simplifies the modelling of wave conditions in coastal waters, resulting in more timely, lower cost but reliable data. Thus, WorldWaves should be particularly beneficial in developing countries. In WorldWaves, the following are integrated under a single Matlab toolbox: · High quality long-term wave data offshore all global coasts. · Global bathymetric and coastline data. · Two shallow water wave models: SWAN, a third generation wave model and a... |
