Rainfed lowland rice condition in northeast Thailand is diverse; hence understanding of rice genotype response to environmental condition is important. The objective of this study was to identify rice varieties suitable for rainfed lowland under variable climatic conditions in Northeast. Environmental conditions were classified under variable climatic conditions. Total of 6 rice varieties were used; 3 varieties from each group of photoperiod sensitivity and insensitivity. The experiment was conducted under upper positions (14 locations) and lower positions (13 locations) in wet season 2013-2014. Combined analysis across environments showed that, there was difference adaptation of genotypes to different group of environmental conditions. Percent of...

In wet season, rainfed area in Lower Northern of Thailand has has an abundance of soil and water availability which is suitable for growing a photoperiod-sensitive rice with high yield potential. However, favorite rice varieties often have low yield and are susceptible to rice pests. Breeding for high yield and resistance to disease and insect pests while maintaining good eating quality is, therefore, the major approaches in changing rice varieties for good qualities, increased yield and adequate consumption. A promising lines, PSL97060-17-CNT-1-2-1, was obtained from three-way cross between KLG88028-22-1-2-2 and F1 of SPR88096-17-3-2-2 and IR60 at Phitsanulok Rice Research Center. Selection in F4-F6 was subsequently conducted at Chai Nat Rice Research...

Purification and improvement of local non-glutinous rice is a sub-project under the Rainfed Lowland Rice Breeding in Southern Region aim s to improve local rice varieties with high yielding potential and specific good grain qualities for niche markets. The experiment s were conducted by using randomized complete block design with four replications. Inter-station yield trials were located in Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pattani and Krabi rice research centers during 2010-2012. Regional yield trials were experimented in Phatthalung, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkla during 2011-2012 wet season. The results from the intra-station yield trials showed the average yield of Chaw Jangwat higher than Chiang Phatthalung by 21 percent and in regional yield trial,...

The program on research and development of rainfed lowland rice in north eastern Thailand in collaboration with the National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) have carried out the project to develop an early maturing, blast resistant, non-glutinous rice variety. The cross between IR57514-PMI-5-B-1-2 and RGDU99016-MAS-77 was developed and the progenies were backcrossed to IR57514-PMI-5-B-1-2 for 3 time at RGDU, BIOTEC. The selected promising line; RGDU06337-MAS-24-B-B, was finally obtained. This line is a non-glutinous, photoperiod sensitive, early maturing line which flowers approximately on October 8 and is ready for harvest on November 11. The average number of panicles per hill is 11 panicles. The average plant height is 114 cm....

Lodging causes yield reduction of rainfed lowland rice, particularly for the two popular varieties; KDML105 and RD6. Improving lodging resistance varieties has been in slow progress due to lack of understanding of morpho-physiological characters related to lodging resistance and also employing inappropriate protocol to evaluate lodging resistant among breeding lines. Experiments in wet season 2012 at UBN-RRC, NRM-RRC and UDN-RRC, were carried out to study plant characters in association with lodging resistance. Rice lines used for the study were breeding lines derived from the cross between IR68586/Leuang Hawm/KDML105, a group of short plant height lines together with a group of high yielding lines. Four standard check cultivars, i.e. Niaw Ubon 2,...

Anuchart Kotchasatit.
Elite line, IR57514-PMI-5-B-1-2 was bred at International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in 1987. Then it has been selected at Phimai Rice Research Station. After that, yield trials were conducted under rainfed lowland condition in North and Northest Thailand. When grown in famer field under drought prone during 1996 - 1999, this line gaved the highest yield by average 542 kg/rai and inter-station yield trials during 2002 - 2014 it yielded by average 598 kg/rai which were 22 and 17% higher than KDML105 in the tested field conditions. The adventages of this line are drought resistance, submergence tolelance, resistant to rice blast disease and high adaptation to grow under rainfed condition. Therefore, it is suitable for reducing the risk from climate...

Population dynamic of golden apple snails related in rice planting phase at Chiang Rai provinces was conducted at irrigated rice field and rainfed rice field in Pan District from January 2012 – November 2014. The objective of this research is to determine the dynamics of golden apple snail population, which snails (applied removal sampling method) were randomly sampled consecutively by Quadrat sampling (1x1 m) at two-week interval. The results showed that the highest snails - density at irrigated rice field was in after harvesting phase but at rainfed rice field the highest density was in booting stage. Snail density showed slightly correlated with water level in rainfed rice field (rs = 0.517, P = 0.011, n = 23) but there was no correlation observed at...

High variation occurs due to climate changes includes low rainfall and uncertain distribution pattern. This affects rice production system. Farmers currently adjust their production system in order to minimize risks of crop losses. This study aims to develop the most suitable cultural practices and chemical fertilizer application for delayed transplanting crop. The adjusted production system to deal with the climate change includes a choice of varieties, cultural practices, water management, and nutrient management. The results from the farmers' interview at the beginning of the project indicated that most farmers faced the problem related to insufficient amount of water for the whole cropping season, late rainfall, dry spell or even drought problem. The...

Blast and bacterial leaf blight diseases are major diseases, which cause severe losses to yield and quality of rice in north eastern region. An evaluation of reaction of rice cultivars/lines to blast and bacterial leaf blight is one of the activities under the program of germplasm improvement in north eastern region with the objective of selecting for the rice lines resistant to leaf and neck blast and to bacterial leaf blight. The experiments were carried out in 2013 at Sakon Nakorn Rice Research Centre using 99 rainfed lowland rice lines and 35 irrigated rice lines. An evaluation of leaf blast at seedling stage was conducted under the upland, short-row conditions. An evaluation of neck blast was conducted at flowering stage by spraying a spore suspension...
