Effect of growth regulators on 'Brookfield' apple gas diffusion and metabolism under controlled atmosphere storage PAB
Brackmann,Auri; Thewes,Fabio Rodrigo; Anese,Rogerio de Oliveira; Both,Vanderlei.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of growth regulators on gas diffusion and on metabolism of 'Brookfield' apple, and to determine their correlation with quality characteristics of fruit stored in controlled atmosphere. A completely randomized design was used with four replicates. After eight months of storage, the effects of water (control), aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG), AVG + ethephon, AVG + naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), ethephon + NAA, sole NAA, 1-MCP, ethylene absorption by potassium permanganate (ABS), AVG + ABS, and of AVG + 1-MCP - applied at different rates and periods - were evaluated on: gas diffusion rate, ethylene production, respiratory rate, internal ethylene concentration, internal CO2 content, mealiness, and...

Responses of Dendrobium 'darrenn glory' and Mokara 'calypso jumbo' orchids to 1-methylcyclopropene and aqueous ozone postharvest treatments Bragantia
Almasi,Parviz; Mohamed,Mahmud Tengku Muda; Anwar,Parvez; Ahmad,Siti Hajar; Kadir,Jugah.
AbstractOrchids possess a very special place amongst ornamental plants. But high ethylene sensitivity and early flower senescence of orchid result in a short vase life and rapid quality deterioration which is of great concern for the growers, traders and consumers. An attempt was made to study the influence of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) (0 and 300 nL L–1) and аquеous ozone (0 and 5.2 nL L–1) in prolonging vase life and maintaining quality of two cut orchid hybrids Dendrobium 'Darren Glory' (DDG) and Mokara “Calypso Jumbo” (MCJ). Results showed that orchid hybrids exhibited differences in their ethylene sensitivity, vase life, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) content and ACC oxidase activities. Pre-treatment...

Increasing plant longevity and associated metabolic events in potted carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L. Clove Pink) Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Karimi,Mahnaz; Asil,Moazzam Hassanpour; Zakizadeh,Hedayat.
The effects of aminooxyacetic acid, benzyladenine, and 1-methylcyclopropene treatments on the post-production flower quality of potted carnation plants (Dianthus caryophyllus L. Clove Pink) were investigated considering ethylene production and antioxidant metabolism. Maximum plant longevity (17 days) was obtained using 70 ppb of 1-methylcyclopropene. As compared to control plants, ethylene production was significantly decreased by aminooxyacetic acid at concentrations over 100 mg L-1, benzyladenine at 20 or 30 mg L-1, and 1-methylcyclopropene at 70 and 140 ppb. A significant increase in 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic-acid concentration was observed in

Ripening of "Pedro Sato" guava: study on its climacteric or non-climacteric nature Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Azzolini,Marisa; Jacomino,Angelo Pedro; Bron,Ilana Urbano; Kluge,Ricardo Alfredo; Schiavinato,Marlene Aparecida.
Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is a tropical fruit exhibiting rapid post-harvest ripening. However, the physiological basis involved in the ripening process of guava is not totally clear, which makes it difficult to develop technologies to enhance fruit storability. Two experiments were carried out with the objective of determining the ripening behavior of 'Pedro Sato' guavas. In the first experiment, guava fruits at three maturity stages (I - dark green, II - light green and III - yellow-green) were stored at room temperature (23 ± 1°C and 85 ± 5 % RH). The respiratory rate, ethylene production, pulp and skin colours, and firmness were evaluated. In the second experiment, ethylene and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) were applied...

Effect of the Cooling System and 1-MCP on the Incidence of Superficial Scald in ‘Granny Smith’ Apples Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Moggia,Claudia; Hernández,Omar; Pereira,Marcia; A. Lobos,Gustavo; Yuri,José Antonio.
A study was carried out to determine the effects of two cooling systems and the application of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP, SmartFreshTM) on the incidence of superficial scald in apples (Malus domestica Borkh.) cv. Granny Smith. Fruit were collected from a commercial orchard (Colbún, Maule Region, Chile) during 2004-2005 season. A completely randomized design was used in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement, using cooling systems (normal and step-wise cooling) and application of 1-MCP (0 and 625 nL L-1 i.a.) as the main factors. Fruit from normal cooling were kept at 0 °C throughout the storage period (180 days). Step-wise cooling consisted of storing the fruit at 10 °C for 10 days; 4 °C for the next 20 days and 0 °C for the...

Effect of Ethylene Inhibitors on Quality Attributes of Apricot cv. Modesto and Patterson during Storage Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Valdés,Héctor; Pizarro,Melissa; Campos-Vargas,Reinaldo; Infante,Rodrigo; G. Defilippi,Bruno.
Apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) fruit are highly susceptible to flesh softening, loss of flavor and fruit decay, particularly during postharvest storage. Most of these quality changes observed during fruit ripening are under ethylene regulation. We performed a study with the objective of determining the effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) applications on quality attributes of Modesto and Patterson apricot cultivars. 1-MCP was applied at a rate of 1000 and 10 000 nL L-1 of SmartFresh™, and AVG at a rate 100 and 1000 mg L-1 of Retain®. Quality evaluations were performed after 20 and 30 days of cold storage and after a shelf-life period of 3-4 days at 20 °C. In general, both ethylene...
