Branchiodrilus hortensis, an exotic worm new for the Dutch fauna (Annelida: Oligochaeta) The peculiar naidid worm Branchiodrilus hortensis (Stephenson, 1910) is recorded new for the Netherlands. In 2002 and 2003 several specimens were collected from three localities in and near the Giessen, a small, slow-flowing river near Gorinchem (province of Zuid-Holland). In 2004 numerous specimens were collected in the small river Aa in the city of Den Bosch (province of Noord-Brabant). These freshwater localities (Cl 50-143 mg/l) are eutrofic, slightly alkaline (pH 7.3-8.6) and with a reasonable oxygen-level (saturation > 70%). Branchiodrilus hortensis is known from southern Asia, Australia and Africa. It is not known how this species has become... |

INTRODUCTION Two years ago I found two specimens of a curious animal in a sample of coral sand from Curaçao. It superficially resembled the larva of priapulids, animals that are restricted to cold water. The condition of the specimens did not permit of a description and I did not succeed in determining the group to which the species could possibly belong. Later I happened to see a paper by Remane (1963) in which he gives a simple figure of "a not yet described animal from the sandy bottom of the Red Sea". I immediately recognized it as a relative of the species from Curaçao. Upon request Professor Remane informed me that he had fixed some specimens, but that these were lost. He had not found more material of the species and he had not heard of these... |

Does the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis feel well in the Netherlands (Hirudinea)? This paper provides information on the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis Linnaeus, 1758 particularly in The Netherlands. Although this species was common in The Netherlands in the 18th century, nowadays it is very rare. Most animals were found in waters on sandy soil (71%): dune pools (10%) and pleistocene sandy areas (61%), where it inhabits especially soft water moor and heathland pools. About 20% of the records originate from river areas, where the species can be found in breakthrough ponds and oxbow lakes. Only 9% of the records are from fen and clay areas. Records of single specimens are not proof of an established population, because these specimens could also... |

The occurrence of the earthworm Allolobophora cupulifera in the Netherlands (Oligochaeta: Lumbricidae) First records are described of the occurrence of the earthworm Allolobophora cupulifera (Tétry, 1937) in the Netherlands. One population of this rare species was found in a grassland site on peaty clay soil in the Kortenbroek polder along the river Lek in the south-western part of the Netherlands. Another population was found in a grassland site on clay loam soil in the Afferdensche en Deestsche Waarden, a flood plain area (river foreland) of the river Waal in the centre of the Netherlands. The finding in moist habitats situated near water agrees with an ecological classification of A. cupulifera as a hygrophilous and relatively acid-tolerant riparian... |

The bivalves of the Noordzeekanaal (Mollusca: Bivalvia) In recent years, the macrobenthos of the Noordzeekanaal area, west of Amsterdam, has been surveyed intensively. The area consists of a main, brackish channel and a set of deep sea harbours. It was discovered that several bivalve species were present in large numbers. Many findings came as a surprise. Especially noteworthy is the presence of a (formerly unknown) sizeable population of lagoon cockle Cerastoderma glaucum. This species has only a sparce distribution in the Netherlands (and surrounding countries). Also, the sand gaper Mya arenaria was found to be remarkably common in many places. The false dark mussel Mytilopsis leucophaeata was already known to be abundant on stony substrate... |

Tardigrades or ‘water-bears’ live in moist environments with a high degree of gaseous exchange. In tardigrades, locomotion is essential, e.g. for feeding, to find sexual partners and to adjust the level of hydration by moving to wetter or dryer environments. Here we report on the movement behaviour of Milnesium tardigradum in automated experiments using custom-made video tracking software. The experiments involved 754 hours of recording involving 32 individuals. No significant differences in mobility were observed under infrared versus visible light conditions, representing night and day, respectively. The mean recorded velocity was 23.3 ± 7.38 mm/h, with a maximum of 1166.4 mm/h. |

The distribution of the land snails of the province of Zeeland, with special emphasis on Vertigo angustior (Mollusca: Gastropoda) In 2005 the land snail fauna of the coast of the province of Zeeland was mapped. In total 98 soil and litter samples were taken and on 54 localities records were gathered on sight. In total 55 land snail species were found, eight of which are on the Dutch red list. Five species, Helicodiscus singleyanus, Boetgerilla pallens, Cernuella cisalpina, Paralaoma servilis and Balea heydeni, were recorded for the first time in the province of Zeeland. Vertigo angustior was rediscovered on most of the known sites and was recorded at several new sites. |

Faunistic overview of the entoprocts of the Netherlands (Entoprocta) Five species of entoprocts are known to occur in the Netherlands: Pedicellina cernua, Barentsia benedeni, Barentsia gracilis, B. matsushimana and B. ramosa. Barentsia ramosa is recorded here for the second time from Europe, from the Nieuwe Waterweg, leading to the port of Rotterdam. The species was found for the first time in Europe in the Westerschelde (near Doel, Belgium), leading to the port of Antwerp. It could not be rediscovered at this locality, but may still be present. Pedicellina nutans has been recorded, but may be a synonym of Pedicellina cernua. As the validity of Pseudopedicellina mutabilis is questioned, the single record of this form from the Netherlands is treated... |

The distribution of the land snails of the province of Noord-Brabant (Mollusca: Gastropoda) In 2003 and 2004 the landsnail fauna of the province of Noord-Brabant (in the south of the Netherlands) was mapped. In total 251 soil and litter samples were taken and on 272 localities records were gathered on sight. The large amount of new records contributes significantly to the knowledge of the land snail fauna of the province of Noord-Brabant and the Netherlands. In total 72 species were found in 2003 and 2004. No less than 13 species of the 41 land snails from the Dutch red list have been found in Noord-Brabant. Three of these could not be recovered during the inventories in 2003 and 2004. Of these, Limacus flavus probably is still present and was... |

Herrn Professor Dr. Boschma zum 70. Geburtstag freundlichst gewidmet. |
