Hoplostethus cadenati sp. nov. Pisces, Beryciforme, Trachichthyidae, poisson nouveau de l'Atlantique Est. ArchiMer
Quero, Jean-claude.
A new trachichthyid fish of the genus Hoplostethus Cuvier, 1829 is described. The new sp, H.cadenati, differs from H.mediterraneus Cuvier, 1829 and H.atlanticus Collett, 1889 but it presents some affinities with H.atlanticus. Mensurations and meristic counts of holotype and 12 paratypes are given. H.cadenati is distributed in the waters along the coast of north-west Africa at South of 27{degree}N, at depths of 200-800 m.

ArchiMer
Marcaillou-le Baut, Claire; Le Dean, Loic; Truquet, Philippe.
Following exceptional outbreak of toxic dinoflagellate species in Vilaine Bay (summer 1983) a survey was carried out: variations in phytoplankton abundance and distribution in water and in mussel guts were followed. In the same time toxicity studies using mouse-test were performed with contaminated shellfishes, and mouse-test calibration was attempted. In spite of sampling and analysis conditions could be open to criticism, results obviously showed relation between shellfishes toxicity and occurrence of responsible species: Dinophysis acuminata.

Spitz, J; Quero, Jean-claude; Vayne, Jean-jacques.
The genus Pseudoscopelus Lutken, 1892 is easily distinguished from the other Chiasmodontidae by the presence of well-defined rows of photophores. Until 2005, eight species were known. Pseudoscopelus scriptus was the first described by Lutken in 1892, then P. sagamianus by Tanaka in 1908, P. stellatus by Beebe in 1932 and P. altipinnis by Parr in 1933. Later in 1934, Fowler described three new species: P. microps, P. cephalus, and P. obtusifrons. These three species, known from only one specimen each, have not been recorded since. Lastly, an easily distinguishable species, P. scutatus, was discovered by Krefft in 1971. In a recent review, Prokoviev and Kukuev (2005, 2006) confirmed the validity of all species and described a new one P. aphos,...

Quero, Jean-claude; Cendrero, O.
Estimation of changes in the relative abundance of fish species in catches off Arcachon, on the shelf and in the Bassin d'Arcachon, from 1727 to the present day, shows that some previously dominant species are becoming scarce. Some are actually not caught now in the south of the Bay of Biscay. Among these are the large bottom-living elasmobranchs with low reproduction rates, such as Echinorhinus brucus, Squatina squatina, Raja batis, Raja brachyura, Dasyatis pastinaca, Myliobatis aquila, Galeorhinus galeus, Mustelus asterias, Raja clavata, ,.. and some actinopterygians, such as Trigla lyra, while catches of Eutrigla gurnardus are much reduced. Bottom trawling is principally responsible for these reductions but all fishing methods used there have...

Alimentation du merlan Merlangius merlangus L. en Mer Celtique ArchiMer
Du Buit, Marie-henriette; Merlina, Frédéric.
The importance of predation by the whiting (Merlangius merlangus ) from the Celtic Sea has been studied by analysis of stomach contents. Eight hundred and thirteen whitings have been examined during 1984-1986 period. Fish food totalizes 97% of food. It is chiefly a swimming species: no cannibalism has been observed. The daily food index varies between 2 and 4% according to the length and the annual consumption on fishes of nominal catches (11230 t for 1983) would reach 135,000 t corresponding to species already fished for human consumption and the fish meal industry.

Parlier, Emmanuel.
Coastal fish populations settle more or less frequently, at various stages, estuarine systems. Tidal marshes are one of the components of these mosaics of habitats. The first part of this work describes fish assemblages through the utilisation of these systems by fishes analysed in order to propose a revised functional classification of ecological guilds. T h i s new classification is used to compare fish communities of four estuarine systems in the western coast of France: the Mont Saint- Michel Bay, the Saint-Brieuc Bay, the Loire estuary and the Aiguillon Bay. The second part aims at characterizing the nursery function as defined by Beck et al. (2001). Acombinative approach based on gut content analysis, and stable isotope analysis shows that Yo Y s e a...

ArchiMer
Marchand, Jocelyne.
Continuous observations of a natural population of R.harrisii tridentatus in the canal from Caen to the sea, and dissections of these crabs permitted the discovery of a protozoan parasite belonging to the fam Haplosporidiidae: Minchinia sp. The parasite exists in the American sp R.harrisii in Chesapeake Bay. The sporocysts are localized in the gills, muscles, general cavity, appendages and pericardial sinus. The harmful action of Minchinia sp. induced an important reduction of R.h.tridentatus population on behalf of a Carcinus maenas one, inversions of sex-ratio and a diminution of the numbers of young crabs (<5.5 mm) imperilling the future of the Xanthid population.

Pinczondusel, G; Daguzan, J.
The specific analysis of preys allows to determine the composition of cuttlefishes alimentary diet in natural conditions. This analysis based on exploitation of stomachal contents shows a majority of Fishes and Brachyura Crustaceans consumed. The alimentary diet with a Fish dominance in winter area (off Belle-Ille island) becomes a Crustacea dominance when adult cuttlefishes come in Morbihan Bay, in March, for reproduction. As for newly-born, they eat exclusively Crustacean Amphipoda and Macrura.

ArchiMer
Grizel, Henri; Comps, Michel; Raguenes, D; Leborgne, Y; Tige, Gilbert; Martin, A.
Following the mass mortality of Ostrea edulis, some experiments were conducted with O. chilensis broodstock and spat coming from Chiloe Island (Chile). Concurrently, spat of th same species produced in a hatchery was cultivated. After a small period of growth, these oysters died during the summer. Microscopic observations showed Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae in the oysters' tissue. For these reasons, Ostrea chilensis has not been retained to temporarily replace O. edulis.

Verin, Yves.
Since 1976, France participates to the International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS), coordinated by the International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES). The main objective of these surveys, which are carried out on board of research vessels, was to obtain annual forecasts of recruitment for the various commercial fish species of the North Sea. These estimates were used by ICES Working Groups to assess these various stocks and to propose management measures for the following year. In addition, the data collected during these surveys concerned biological and abundance analysis of main commercial fish species exploited by European countries in the North Sea. The results of studies were published in scientific papers and have improved knowledge in this...

Age estimation and growth of some deep-sea fish from the northeast Atlantic ocean ArchiMer
Allain, Valerie; Lorance, Pascal.
Age is a necessary parameter used in population dynamics to assess the state of exploited resources. This parameter is poorly known for most deep-sea species (depth > 400 m). This work focused on age estimation from otoliths of Alepocephalus bairdii (Alepocephalidae), Coryphaenoides rupestris (Macrouridae), Helicolenus dactylopterus (Sebastidae) and Hoplostethus atlanticus (Trachichthyidae), which French fishery exploitation, off the west coasts of the British Isles, began the late 1980's. Considering otolith growth zones as annual, the four species all show high longevity: 38, 54, 43 and 130 years, respectively, together with slow growth. The differences in growth between sex were estimated and difficulties in accurately estimating the age were...

ArchiMer
Paulmier, Gerard; Joly, Jean-pierre.
Numerous cases of food poisoning were observed in South Normandy during the summer 1983 and attributed to shellfish consumption. At the same time a dinoflagellate Dinophysis acuminata was found in the Bay of Seine and in north Normandy where high concentrations induced "red waters". The observation of the stomach contents of the mussels showed that this Dinophysis was one of the main constituents of the alimentary bolus. The toxicity of type DSP, determined by the mouse-test, is more or less correlated with the abundance coefficient of D. acuminata . Its space distribution also seems connected to the tidal movements.

Jacq, Estelle; Prieur, D.
Studies concerning the respective role of free-living and particle-bound bacteria in pelagic ecosystems, sometimes gave opposite results. The comparative distribution of these bacterial patterns was studied in two sites of Brittany. In the Bay of Brest, a shallow and semi-enclosed area, the bacterial communities were dominated by the free-living forms, except during the phytoplankton bloom, which was accompanied by a clear increase of the particle-bound forms. Off the west coasts of Brittany, the Ushant front separates stratified water masses from mixed water masses. The distribution of particle-bound bacteria fluctuated according to the structure of the water masses and in mixed waters, was related to particulate matter from different origins. Results...
