The ectoparasite mite Varroa destructor Anderson and Trueman in southeastern Brazil apiaries: effects of the hygienic behavior of Africanized honey bees on infestation rates Ciências Agrárias

Soil invertebrates in southern Brazilian Araucaria forest - grassland mosaic: differences between disturbed and undisturbed areas Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Frainer,André; Duarte,Marcelo M..
Soil invertebrate distribution in Araucaria forest, grassland and edge habitats was studied in both disturbed and undisturbed areas in southern Brazil. Mean-density and taxa compositions were verified. Invertebrate densities differed between grassland and the other two habitats in the undisturbed area but not across the disturbed one. At the disturbed area taxa differed between the grassland and the other two habitats. The undisturbed area, on the other hand, presented taxa differences only between the grassland and the forest habitats. Acari, Arachnida and Collembola were the most sensitive taxa for detecting differences across habitats in both areas. At the disturbed area, these taxa presented densities lowering from the forest to the grassland. At the...

Abundância de microartrópodes do solo em fragmentos de mata com araucária no sul do Brasil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Duarte,Marcelo Maisonette.
The abundance of soil microarthropods from seven fragments of Araucaria Forest, Muitos Capões, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, was compared. The size of the fragments ranged from 0.25 ha to 35 ha, the two largest fragments are situated within the Aracuri Ecological Station and the remaining five are situated in a cattle ranching farm. In June 2000, three plots (10 m x 10 m) were established in the central area of each patch, and three soil cores (7 cm diameter x 6 cm deep) were taken per plot. The abundance of microarthropods in the upper six centimeters (soil + litter) varied between 63209 and 102704 ind.m-2, with oribatid mites (Acari, Cryptostigmata) being dominant in all fragments (between 46.9 % and 61.3 % of total individuals). Most microarthropod groups...

Geographic variation in ectoparasitic mites diversity in Tadarida Brasiliensis (Chiroptera, Molossidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Pesenti,Tatiana C.; Gomes,Sâmara N.; Rui,Ana M.; Müller,Gertrud.
Tadarida brasiliensis (Geoffroy, 1824), the Brazilian free-tailed bat, is an insectivorous bat that occurs from southern United States of America to southern South America. In this study we present the first data on diversity of ectoparasitic mites of T. brasiliensis in Brazil. A compilation and analysis of the studies of mite diversity conducted in different points the geographic distribution this bat species are provided. The mites were collected from March 2010 to November 2011 on 160 T. brasiliensis adult bats captured in southern Brazil. Four species of mites have been found: Chiroptonyssus robustipes (Ewing, 1925), Ewingana longa (Ewing, 1938), Ewingana inaequalis (Radford, 1948), and specimens of Cheyletidae. Chiroptonyssus robustipes was the most...

Mitotic and meiotic chromosomes of a southern Brazilian population of Boophilus microplus (Acari, Ixodidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Garcia,Rosane Nunes; Garcia-Fernandez,Casemiro; Garcia,Sonia Maria Lauer; Valente,Vera Lúcia S..
Using conventional staining with acetic orcein and C-banding techniques it was investigated constitutive heterochromatin chromosomal polymorphisms and the mitotic and the meiotic behavior of male and female chromosomes of Boophilus microplus (Canestrini, 1887). Some differences were detected in the population of southern Brazil as compared to the data of other authors for populations in other latitudes. The differences being mainly concerned with the distribution of constitutive centromeric heterochromatin and variation in the length of heterochromatic blocks in the pericentromeric regions of some chromosome pairs.

New histochemical and morphological findings in the female genital tract of Boophilus microplus (Acari, Ixodidae): an attempt toward the elucidation of fertilization in ticks Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
García-Fernández,Casimiro; Garcia,Sonia M. Lauer; Garcia,Rosane Nunes; Valente,Vera L. da Silva.
At present not only is the site of fertilization in ticks still unknown but it is also unclear as to how this mystery can be solved. Signs of fertilization can be observed throughout the female genital tract and these can be clues for the elucidation of the unsolved questions relating to ticks fertilization. In Boophilus microplus (Canestrini, 1887) the most important signs are the following: the final eversion of the acrosomal canal in females ready for oviposition; the presence of small tubules, resembling the subplasmalemal process of the spermatozoon between the oviduct cells; budding nuclei throughout the female genital tract; and the two Feulgen and DAPI positive areas in the oocyte at vitelogenesis. These morphological characteristics suggest that...

Provisional checklist of the astigmatic mites of the Netherlands (Acari: Oribatida: Astigmatina) Naturalis
Siepel, H.; Cremers, H.J.W.M.; Vierbergen, G..
Astigmatic mites probably form the most diverse cohort of mites. At present the former order of Astigmatina is ranked within the suborder Oribatida or moss mites. However astigmatic mites occupy a much wider range of habitats than other oribatid mites: from marine coasts to stored food, plant bulbs and houses. The vast majority live as commensals or parasites on a variety of hosts, ranging from insects to birds and mammals, inhabiting the fur, feathers, skin and even lungs and stomach. This first checklist for the Netherlands contains 262 species, but many more are to be expected. Brief data on occurrence and nomenclature are provided for each species.

New mossmites from The Netherlands (Acari: Oribatida) Naturalis
Siepel, H.; Dimmers, W.J.; Smits , N.A.C.; Vierbergen, G..
Mossmites are small micro-arthropods which live in the soil. In a number of ongoing Alterra-projects and checks of the Plant Disease Control Unit nine mossmite species have been recorded which were not yet included in the recently published Dutch checklist, nor in the supplements. The total number of mossmite species in the Netherlands is now 336. More species are to be expected in underexplored areas and habitats, some of which are to be investigated in the near future.
