ALTERATION OF NITROGEN CYCLING BY AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES, AND ITS ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH CONSEQUENCES Gayana Botánica
Cleemput,Oswald van; Boeckx,Pascal.
The food demands of the increasing world population puts pressure on land use and N availability. In this paper an overview is given of the different N cycling processes affected by agricultural activities. Of the amount of N added to the soil, about half is removed from the field as harvested crop, while the remainder of the N is incorporated into soil organic matter or is lost to other parts of the environment. During the last decades there has been much research on environmental consequences of agricultural activities, mainly on emission of gaseous N compounds (NH3, NO, N2O and N2), but also on N leaching, runoff and erosion. Study of the factors controlling loss of N is complex because of their multiplicity and mutual interactions. More recently...

Carbonate system properties and anthropogenic carbon inventory in the Algerian Basin during SOMBA cruise (2014): Acidification estimate ArchiMer
Keraghel, Mehdia Asma; Louanchi, Ferial; Zerrouki, Mohamed; Kaci, Malik Ait; Aït-ameur, Nadira; Labaste, Matthieu; Legoff, Hervé; Taillandier, Vincent; Harid, Romaissa; Mortier, Laurent.
Recent studies have provided a better understanding of carbonate system parameters and their spatial and temporal variability in several areas of the Mediterranean Sea. This study uses a new dataset that covered the entire Algerian Basin during the summer of 2014 (SOMBA cruise) to describe the distribution of carbonate system parameters. The findings show that almost the entire basin was a source of CO2 to the atmosphere during the studied period. Besides the well-known TrOCA (Tracer combining Oxygen, Carbon and total Alkalinity) approach, the study proposes new parametrization for the standard back calculation method to assess the anthropogenic carbon concentration. The results of both approaches yield similar distributions and concentration ranges...

Seawater Acidification Affects Beta-Diversity of Benthic Communities at a Shallow Hydrothermal Vent in a Mediterranean Marine Protected Area (Underwater Archaeological Park of Baia, Naples, Italy) ArchiMer
Appolloni, Luca; Zeppilli, Daniela; Donnarumma, Luigia; Baldrighi, Elisa; Chianese, Elena; Russo, Giovanni Fulvio; Sandulli, Roberto.
One of the most important pieces of climate change evidence is ocean acidification. Acidification effects on marine organisms are widely studied, while very little is known regarding its effects on assemblages’ β-diversity. In this framework, shallow hydrothermal vents within a Marine Protected Area (MPA) represent natural ecosystems acting as laboratory set-ups where the continuous carbon dioxide emissions affect assemblages with consequences that can be reasonably comparable to the effects of global water acidification. The aim of the present study is to test the impact of seawater acidification on the β-diversity of soft-bottom assemblages in a shallow vent field located in the Underwater Archeological Park of Baia MPA (Gulf of Naples, Mediterranean...

Stratospheric ozone depletion reduces ocean carbon uptake and enhances ocean acidification ArchiMer
Lenton, Andrew; Codron, Francis; Bopp, Laurent; Metzl, Nicolas; Cadule, Patricia; Tagliabue, Alessandro; Le Sommer, Julien.
Observational and atmospheric inversion studies find that the strength of the Southern Ocean carbon dioxide (CO2) sink is not increasing, despite rising atmospheric CO2. However, this is yet to be captured by contemporary coupled-climate-carbon-models used to predict future climate. We show that by accounting for stratospheric ozone depletion in a coupled-climate-carbon-model, the ventilation of carbon rich deep water is enhanced through stronger winds, increasing surface water CO2 at a rate in good agreement with observed trends. We find that Southern Ocean uptake is reduced by 2.47 PgC (1987-2004) and is consistent with atmospheric inversion studies. The enhanced ventilation also accelerates ocean acidification, despite lesser Southern Ocean CO2 uptake....

Low pH reduced survival of the oyster Crassostrea gigas exposed to the Ostreid herpesvirus 1 by altering the metabolic response of the host ArchiMer
Fuhrmann, Marine; Richard, Gaëlle; Quere, Claudie; Petton, Bruno; Pernet, Fabrice.
Environmental change in the marine realm has been accompanied by emerging diseases as new pathogens evolve to take advantage of hosts weakened by environmental stress. Here we investigated how an exposure to reduced seawater pH influenced the response of the oyster Crassostrea gigas to an infection by the Ostreid herpesvirus type I (OsHV-1). Oysters were acclimated at pH 8.1 or pH 7.8 and then exposed to OsHV-1. Their survival was monitored and oyster tissues were sampled for biochemical analyses. The survival of oysters exposed to OsHV-1 at pH 7.8 was lower (33.5%) than that of their counterparts at pH 8.1 (44.8%) whereas levels of OsHV-1 DNA were similar. Energetic reserves, fatty acid composition and prostaglandin levels in oyster did not vary...

Freshwater and its role in the Arctic Marine System: sources, disposition, storage, export, and physical and biogeochemical consequences in the Arctic and global oceans ArchiMer
Carmack, E. C.; Yamamoto-kawai, M.; Haine, T. W. N.; Bacon, S.; Bluhm, B. A.; Lique, Camille; Melling, H.; Polyakov, I. V.; Straneo, F.; Timmermans, M. -l.; Williams, W. J..
The Arctic Ocean is a fundamental node in the global hydrological cycle and the ocean's thermohaline circulation. We here assess the system's key functions and processes: 1) the delivery of fresh and low salinity waters to the Arctic Ocean by river inflow, net precipitation, distillation during the freeze/thaw cycle and Pacific Ocean inflows; 2) the disposition (e.g. sources, pathways and storage) of freshwater components within the Arctic Ocean; and 3) the release and export of freshwater components into the bordering convective domains of the North Atlantic. We then examine physical, chemical or biological processes which are influenced or constrained by the local quantities and geochemical qualities of fresh water; these include: stratification and...

Chemical attributes of a Hapludox soil after nine years of pig slurry application PAB
Veiga,Milton da; Pandolfo,Carla Maria; Balbinot Junior,Alvadi Antonio; Spagnollo,Evandro.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the pig slurry application effects on chemical attributes of a Hapludox soil managed under no-tillage system. Treatments consisted of 50, 100 and 200 m³ ha-1 per year of pig slurry application, and a control with replacement of P and K exported through harvested grains. Attributes related to soil chemical reaction, exchange complex, and nutrient contents were determined in soil samples collected in the ninth year of experimentation from 0 - 0.025, 0.025 - 0.05, 0.05 - 0.10, 0.10 - 0.20, 0.20 - 0.40 and 0.40 - 0.60 m soil depths. The continuous application of high doses of pig slurry on the Oxisol surface under no-tillage acidifies the soil and increases Al, P, Cu, and Zn contents down to 0.2-m depth, and K levels...

Plant proton pumps as markers of biostimulant action Scientia Agricola
Zandonadi,Daniel Basílio; Santos,Mirella Pupo; Caixeta,Lisanne Santos; Marinho,Eduardo Barros; Peres,Lázaro Eustáquio Pereira; Façanha,Arnoldo Rocha.
ABSTRACT A standard protocol to evaluate the effects of biostimulants on plant physiology is still lacking. The proton pumps present in the vacuolar and plasma membranes are the primary agents responsible for the regulation of the electrochemical gradient that energizes the nutrient uptake system and acid growth mechanism of plant cells. In this study, two of these enzymes were characterized as biochemical markers of biostimulant activity. A simple and fast protocol based on the degree of root acidification using a pH sensitive dye and the Micro-Tom tomato as a plant model is proposed as an efficient methodology to prove the efficacy of biostimulants that are claimed to improve nutrient acquisition and root growth. The results agree with the data from more...

In-vitro assessment for ensilabillity of Tithonia diversifolia alone or with Pennisetum purpureum using epiphytic lactic acid bacteria strains as inocula Animal Sciences
Holguín, Vilma; Cuchillo-Hilario, Mario; Parra, Johanna Mazabel; Martens, Siriwans.
It is expected that the availability of forage for animals in the tropics will fluctuate in the future due to climate change. Ensiling of tropical forages constitutes a strategy to cope with food scarcity during long dry seasons. Tithonia diversifolia (TD), is a plant belonging to family Asteraceae, with a wide adaptation in tropical areas. A Rostock Fermentation Test (RFT) was performed to compare the ensilabillity potential among four epiphytic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains isolated from TD. Further, two experiments were designed 1) to evaluate the acidification potential of the best strain from the preliminary test (T735), and 2) to determine the ensilability of different levels of inclusion in the TD / PP mixture. For the first experiment, T735...

Synaptic vesicle cycling is not impaired in a glutamatergic and a cholinergic synapse that exhibit deficits in acidification and filling BJPS
Abreu,Bento João; Leite,Luciana Ferreira; Oliveira,Débora Lopes; Amaral,Ernani.
The purpose of the present work was to investigate synaptic vesicle trafficking when vesicles exhibit alterations in filling and acidification in two different synapses: a cholinergic frog neuromuscular junction and a glutamatergic ribbon-type nerve terminal in the retina. These synapses display remarkable structural and functional differences, and the mechanisms regulating synaptic vesicle cycling might also differ between them. The lipophilic styryl dye FM1-43 was used to monitor vesicle trafficking. Both preparations were exposed to pharmacological agents that collapse ΔpH (NH4Cl and methylamine) or the whole ΔµH+ (bafilomycin), a necessary situation to provide the driving force for neurotransmitter accumulation into synaptic vesicles. The results...
