Hydrothermal multivariable approach: Full-scale feasibility study Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Pérez-Elvira,Sara I; Fernández-Polanco,Fernando; Fernández-Polanco,María; Rodríguez,Pilar; Rouge,Philippe.
A process configuration combining thermal hydrolysis (TH) and anaerobic digestion (AD) of sludge has been studied with the objective of analysing the feasibility of the technology for full scale installations. The study has been performed through pilot scale experiments and energy integration considerations, and a scheme of the most profitable option is presented: thermal hydrolysis unit fed with 7% total solids (TS) secondary sludge, anaerobic digestion of the hydrolysed sludge together with fresh primary sludge, and a cogeneration unit to produce green electricity and provide hot steam for the thermal hydrolysis process. From a technical and practical point of view, the process scheme proposed is considered to be feasible. Based on the results of the...

Macromolecular composition and anaerobic degradation of the sludge produced in a sequencing batch reactor Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Chelme,Susana; Fonseca,Pamela; Mercado,Rodrigo; Alarcon,Nelson; Sánchez,Omar.
The effect of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) operating conditions on sludge macromolecular composition and the effect of sludge macromolecular composition on the anaerobic degradation of the sludge produced in SBR was investigated in this work. A SBR, fed with synthetic wastewater, was operated at different air flow rates. The resulting sludge was analyzed in terms of protein, carbohydrate, phospholipid and polyhydroxybutyrate concentrations. Methane production during anaerobic digestion of the sludge was also measured. Ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved oxygen and chemical oxygen demand (COD) track studies in the SBR were carried out in order to relate SBR performance and sludge macromolecular composition. The lowest air flow rate at which the SBR was...

Effect of sulphate concentration and sulphide desorption on the combined removal of organic matter and sulphate from wastewaters using expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Valdés,Freddy; Muñoz,Edmundo; Chamy,Rolando; Ruiz,Gonzalo; Vergara,Christian; Jeison,David.
During the application of anaerobic processes to high sulphate concentration wastewaters, operational problems are expected due to the occurrence of sulphate reduction. Sulphide production reduces effluent quality and may produce inhibition. The application of Expanded Granular Sludge Bed (EGSB) reactors for the combined removal of organic matter and sulphate was studied at different COD/sulphate and 3 values of pH. During the EGSB reactor operation, most of the sulphide remains in the liquid phase reducing effluent quality. The inclusion of a desorption column in the recirculation of the EGSB reactor promotes mass transfer to the gas phase, reducing the sulphide concentration in the liquid phase, significantly decreasing the chemical oxygen demand of the...

16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA)-targeted fluorescent in situ hybridization combined with polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-cloning, light microscopy using Gram stains, scanning electron microscopy and denatured gradient gel electrophoresis were used to reveal the distribution of methanogens within an anaerobic closed digester tank fed with palm oil mill effluent. For specific detection of methanogens, 16S rRNA-cloning analysis was conducted followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) for presumptive identification of methanogens. To cover the drawbacks of the PCR-cloning study, the organization of the microorganisms was visualized in the activated sludge sample by using fluorescent oligonucleotide probes specific to several different methanogens,...

Cassava starch extraction effluent treatment in a one phase tubular horizontal pilot reactor with support medium REA
Kuczman,Osvaldo; Tavares,Maria H. F.; Gomes,Simone D.; Guedes,Luciana P. C.; Grisotti,Geovane.
The cassava starch industries generate a large volume of wastewater effluent that, stabilized in ponds, wastes its biogas energy and pollutes the atmosphere. To contribute with the reversion of this reality, this manipueira treatment research was developed in one phase anaerobic horizontal pilot reactor with support medium in bamboo pieces. The reactor was excavated into the ground and sealed with geomembrane in HDPE, having a volume equal to 33.6 m³ and continuous feeding by gravity. The stability indicators were pH, volatile acidity/total alkalinity ratio and biogas production. The statistical analyses were performed by a completely randomized design, with answers submitted to multivariate analysis. The organical loads in COD were 0.556; 0.670; 0.678 and...

ENERGY POTENTIAL OF BIOGAS FROM PIG FARMS IN THE STATE OF MINAS GERAIS, BRAZIL REA
Sousa,Izabelle de P.; Rosa,André P.; Borges,Alisson C.; Renato,Natália dos S..
ABSTRACT Pig farming stands out as an alternative for decentralized electrical energy production from the use of biogas energy. However, its use is still limited. Thus, this study aimed to estimate and map the biogas production, as well as determine the electric power originated by the use of biogas produced in covered lagoon biodigester from pig farms of different sizes in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The research was based on data provided by the Instituto Mineiro de Agropecuária (IMA). Three forms of electric power were estimated, as follows: (i) total, (ii) current, and (iii) installed. They were estimated from the volume of manure generated at each development stage of the animals. The total electric power corresponded to 31 MW, while the...

Carbon conversion efficiency and population dynamics of a marine algae–bacteria consortium growing on simplified synthetic digestate: First step in a bioprocess coupling algal production and anaerobic digestion ArchiMer
Vasseur, Christophe; Bougaran, Gael; Garnier, Matthieu; Hamelin, Jérôme; Leboulanger, Christophe; Le Chevanton, Myriam; Mostajir, Behzad; Sialve, Bruno; Steyer, Jean-philippe; Fouilland, Eric.
Association of microalgae culture and anaerobic digestion seems a promising technology for sustainable algal biomass and biogas production. The use of digestates for sustaining the growth of microalgae reduces the costs and the environmental impacts associated with the substantial algal nutrient requirements. A natural marine algae–bacteria consortium was selected by growing on a medium containing macro nutrients (ammonia, phosphate and acetate) specific of a digestate, and was submitted to a factorial experimental design with different levels of temperature, light and pH. The microalgal consortium reached a maximum C conversion efficiency (i.e. ratio between carbon content produced and carbon supplied through light photosynthetic C conversion and acetate)...

開発途上国における家畜糞尿からのバイオガス生産とその展望 OAK
Ishibashi, Kenichi; Day, Donald L; Zhang, Ruihong; Hironaka, Kazunori; Koaze, Hiroshi.
Fuel, feed, and fertilizer are critical resources that often must be imported. Especially for agriculturalists in developing countries, the high cost of these resources and high interest rates create significant economic problems. These economic problems, the decreased availability of renewable sources of fuel, and the need for pollution control and fertilizer conservation have forced people to look for new sources of these resources. Methane fermentation technology is one alternative that has received widespread interest in developing countries because it converts locally available byproducts into fuel, feed, and fertilizer. Through a microbial process, agricultural waste material and byproducts can be converted into valuable products. This conversion...

Expanding biogas on UK dairy farms: a question of scale AgEcon
Butler, Allan J.; Hobbs, Phil; Winter, Michael.
Expanding Anaerobic Digestion (AD) in the UK will not only depend upon finding appropriate economic structures to support on‐farm developments but also an appreciation of environmental issues such as less Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions; reduced use of artificial fertilisers; and better management of farm wastes. At the core of this paper is the Anaerobic Digestion Analytical Model (ADAM) that examines the economic and environmental impacts of integrating AD into UK farming systems. However, the average dairy farm in the UK is not of sufficient size to enable profitable biogas production. Indeed, farm size, as represented by FBS/FAS data used in ADAM, needs to be scaled by three to four times for a biogas enterprise to break‐even. To boost profitability,...

Economic feasibility of converting cow manure to electricity: A case study of the CVPS Cow Power program in Vermont AgEcon
Wang, Qingbin; Thompson, Ethan; Parsons, Robert L.; Rogers, Glenn.
A case study of the Central Vermont Public Service Corporation (CVPS) Cow Power program examines the economic feasibility for dairy farms to convert cow manure into electricity via anaerobic methane digestion. The study confirms that it is technically feasible to convert cow manure to electricity on dairy farms but the economic returns highly depend on the base electricity price paid by CVPS, premium rate paid by CVPS customers, financial supports from government agencies and other organizations, and sales of the by-products of methane generation. Lessons learned from this program will be useful to other dairy farms and communities interested in converting cow manure into electricity.
