The anthochron as a building block of flower development PAB
Streck,Nereu Augusto; Schwab,Natalia Teixeira.
Abstract: Plant vegetative development has been widely described using the phyllochron concept, but little effort has been made to describe flower development during the reproductive phase. The objective of this work was to present the anthochron, through a review of the literature, as a building block of flower development, mainly during the flower opening phase. The anthochron is the time interval needed for two subsequent flowers to achieve the same developmental stage, with units of time in days or in ºC day per flower. The concept of anthochron fulfills part of the lack of studies on flower development, since it is considered a building block of the flower opening process. The anthochron can be measured from field experiments or estimated by a simple...

Cuticle and cuticular wax development in the sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) pericarp grown at the field under a moderate water deficit Phyton
Franchini1,MC; Hernández,LF; Lindström,LI.
Wax in the sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) pericarp is an important morphological feature that interferes with oil quality and varies with crop management and environmental conditions. We studied the effect of a moderate water deficit (MWD) generated from early to late anthesis on quantitative development of the cuticle, and qualitative and quantitative development of the cuticular waxes (CW) of the pericarp in two hybrids grown under field conditions. The experiment was repeated during two consecutive seasons (Exp-I and Exp-II). At harvest maturity (HM), plants grown under a MWD showed higher CW content (31 to 47%) and thicker cuticles (13%) in both experiments compared to controls. Epicuticular wax (ECW) crystals showed a granular morphology. Also a...

Lemos,Lorena Moreira Carvalho; Salomão,Luiz Carlos Chamhum; Siqueira,Dalmo Lopes de; Pereira,Olinto Liparini; Cecon,Paulo Roberto.
Abstract There are little information in the scientific literature on flowering and fruiting of ‘Ubá’ mango trees. These information enables to know the proportion of hermaphrodite flowers in inflorescence, fruit set percentage and developmental stages of the fruit. In this study evaluations on inflorescence and fruit development of the ‘Ubá’ mango tree (Mangifera indica L.) were carried out, as well as the determination of the required number of heat units for full fruit development. Thirty branches whose terminal buds were swollen were selected from five mango trees. With the aid of a camera and a caliper, the panicle and fruit development were evaluated weekly until full fruit development. A digital thermometer was used to record ambient temperatures...

Maturation of Physalis peruviana L. seeds according to flowering and age of the fruit Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Diniz,Fábio Oliveira; Novembre,Ana Dionisia da Luz Coelho.
ABSTRACT It is important to understand the seed maturation process to determine the time point at which the seeds achieve optimum quality and the ideal time for harvest. This study aimed to study the maturation of Physalis peruviana L. seeds, based on flowering time and age of the fruit. This study was conducted from March to October of 2016 and 2017, in the city of Piracicaba, São Paulo. The plants were cultivated in four blocks using four stems, with spacing of 1.0 m between the plants and of 2.5 m between the rows. As experimental treatments, two flowering time points were defined: 55 and 105 days after transplanting (DAT); in each period, the flowers were marked at the anthesis and the respective fruits and seeds were evaluated at 45, 60, 75, and 90...

Physiological maturity of Physalis angulata L. seeds Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Santiago,Willen Ramos; Gama,Juliana Simões Nobre; Torres,Salvador Barros; Bacchetta,Gianluigi.
ABSTRACT Determination of seed physiological maturity allows predicting the most appropriate time for harvest, aiming to obtain seeds with high physiological potential. Physalis angulata (Solanaceae) has pharmacological and agro-industrial potential, but there is little information on its reproductive phenology. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the physiological maturity of P. angulata seeds according to fruit age. Fruits were harvested at 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days after anthesis (DAA) and the following evaluations were conducted: fruit weight and diameter, seed moisture content, 100-seed dry weight, 1000-seed weight, electrical conductivity, germination, germination first count, emergence, and seedling dry weight and length. The experimental design was...

Rice cold tolerance at the reproductive stage in a controlled environment Scientia Agricola
Cruz,Renata Pereira da; Milach,Sandra Cristina Kothe; Federizzi,Luiz Carlos.
Cold tolerance of rice (Oryza sativa L.) during the reproductive stage is important to guarantee high yield under low temperature environments. Field selection, however, does not allow identification of adequate tolerance sources and limits selection of segregating lines due to variable temperature. The objective of this study was to devise methods for distinguishing rice genotypes as to their cold tolerance at the reproductive stage when evaluated under controlled temperature. The effect of cold temperatures was investigated in six rice genotypes at 17°C for varying length of time (three, five, seven and ten days) at two reproductive stages (microsporogenesis and anthesis). Cold tolerance was measured as the percentage of reduction in panicle exsertion...

Pollination of Peltogyne chrysopis: an endemic tree of the Atlantic Forest Acta Botanica
Souza,Isys Mascarenhas; Funch,Ligia Silveira; Queiroz,Luciano Paganucci de.
ABSTRACT Peltogyne chrysopis is an arboreal legume endemic to the Atlantic Forest and known only from the state of Bahia, Brazil. Focal observations were made of anthesis, pollen availability, stigma receptivity, nectar production, and the presence of osmophores and UV-reflective pigments for the species. Floral visitors were also observed and classified based on the timing and frequency of their visits and their foraging behavior. The breeding system was inferred from the pollen-ovule ratio and pollen tube growth after pollination treatments. Peltogyne chrysopis was found to be melittophilous, with anthesis occurring from 02h00min to 05h00min, and protogynous and xenogamous, with flower scent emission and pollen release before sunrise. Xenochlora...

Morphology and anatomy of the flower and anthesis of Metrodorea nigra St. Hill. (Rutaceae) BABT
Souza,Luiz A. de; Moscheta,Ismar S.; Mourão,Káthia S. M.; Rosa,Sonia M. da.
Studies on the morphology and anatomy of the flower and anthesis of Metrodorea nigra St. Hill. (Rutaceae) showed perfect flowers, which occurred in panicle. The peak of the flowering was August and September. The anthesis was diurnal and the species presented protandrous flowers. The green sepals and the red petals presented papillose epidermis with stomata and parenchymatic mesophyll. The tetrasporangiate anther presented a papillose epidermis too, endothecium cells with secondary parietal thickenings, two middle layers and binucleate tapetum. The only pistil presented an ovary wall with nectariferous tissue and a meristematic ventral epidermis, a solid style and an inconspicuous stigma. The ovules were anatropous, bitegmic and crassinucelate and...

Implementation and Evaluation of an Image Analysis System for Determining Viability of Pollen Grains in Temperate Rice Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Ortega B,Rodrigo; Aresti E,Macarena; Pereira R,Iris.
Geographical and climatic factors limit the production of temperate rice (Oryza sativa L.) in Chile. Large thermal fluctuations of air and water temperatures affect the viability of pollen, causing high levels of spikelet sterility (”blanking”), resulting in reduced yields per hectare. Counting viable pollen grains, at the time of anthesis, may allow determining, ahead, whether there will be yield losses by spikelet sterility; besides, knowing the potential pollen viability serves as a powerful tool for material selection in breeding programs, and for determining which management factors may influence ”blanking”. If performed manually, counting total and viable pollen grains can be extremely tedious, producing highly variable results. The present work had...

Martins,Emanoel Sanches; Davide,Livia Maria Chamma; Miranda,Gian José; Barizon,Jefferson de Oliveira; Souza Junior,Francisco de Assis; Carvalho,Rafael Pelloso de; Gonçalves,Manoel Carlos.
ABSTRACT: In the present study, we aimed to assess the in vitro viability of pollen grains from maize cultivars collected at different times and days in the field. Four cultivars (Sol da Manhã, XB 6012, XB 8010, and BRS 2020) were evaluated from the second to fifth day of anthesis in three times. Pollen samples were evaluated for their in vitro viability through standard germination test in liquid and solid media and tetrazolium staining. The experimental design was completely randomized, in 4x4x3 split-split plots with four replicates. Data were subjected to analysis of variance followed by a means clustering test and linear regression analysis. The average percentage of viable pollen varied according to the day, collection time, and cultivar. In general,...
