Copper-induced adaptation, oxidative stress and its tolerance in Aspergillus niger UCP1261 Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Cavalcanti Luna,Marcos A; Rodrigues Vieira,Edson; Okada,Kaoru; Campos-Takaki,Galba Maria; do Nascimento,Aline Elesbão.
Background The effects of exposure to copper, during growth, on the production of biomass, total protein, catalase, glutathione-S transferase, glutathione peroxidase, peroxidase, polyphosphate, acid and alkaline phosphatases, ultrastructure and the ability to remove this metal from Aspergillus niger, obtained from caatinga soil, were evaluated. Results All parameters tested were influenced by the concentration of metal in the culture medium. The presence of metal induced high levels of antioxidant enzymes, including lipid peroxidation, thereby revealing the appearance of an oxidative stress response. The variation in polyphosphate levels indicates the participation of the polymer in response to stress induced by copper. The activities of the phosphatases...

Protective role of vitamins C and E in diclorvos-induced oxidative stress in human erythrocytes in vitro Biol. Res.
Eroglu,Sema; Pandir,Dilek; Uzun,Fatma G; Bas,Hatice.
Organophosphate (OP) pesticides such as dichlorvos (DDVP) intoxication has been shown to produce oxidative stress due to the generation of free radicals, which alter the antioxidant defense system in erythrocytes. In this study, the effects of DDVP (1, 10, 100 µM) or DDVP + vitamin C (VC; 10 µM) or vitamin E (VE; 30 µM), on the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities in human erythrocytes were examined in vitro. There were no statistical differences between all groups for 1 µM concentration of DDVP. Treatment with DDVP alone produced an increase in the level of MDA and decreased activities of antioxidant enzymes (P < 0.05). Groups treated with vitamins and DDVP showed...

Impact of cyclic water stress on growth, physiological responses and yield of rice (Oryza sativa L.) grown in tropical environment Ciência Rural
Zain,Nurul Amalina Mohd; Ismail,Mohd Razi; Puteh,Adam; Mahmood,Maziah; Islam,M Robiul.
A series of water stress cycles [5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 days of irrigation intervel including control flooded (CF), control saturated (CS)] were exposed to investigate the impact of cyclic water stress on growth, physiological responses and yield of a famous Malaysian rice variety, MR220. The study also aimed to determine optimum irrigation schedule for better production of rice. It was observed that grain yield, total biomass, filled spikelet, 1000 grain weight, total panicle, tillers mortality, plant height and number of tillers per plant reduces with increased duration of water stress cycles. Grain yield was higher both in CF and CS condition and those are statistically identical to 5 days of stress cycle or irrigation intervel. The present experiment...

Multiple stresses on the oxidative metabolism of sugarcane varieties Ciência Rural
Morais,Marciana Bizerra de; Camara,Terezinha Rangel; Ulisses,Cláudia; Carvalho Filho,José Luiz Sandes; Willadino,Lilia.
ABSTRACT: The exposure of plants to multiple stress conditions can cause over production of reactive oxygen species promoting an imbalance in the redox system. The aim of this study was to examine the antioxidant response from varieties of sugarcane under adverse conditions, to understand the defense mechanisms of tolerant and sensitive genotypes. Micropropagated sugarcane of six genotypes, RB966928, RB98710, RB855453, RB99395, RB867515, and RB855156, were subjected to isolated action of high-temperature stress and a combination of water and saline stress, and effects were evaluated. Activities of enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), as well as stress indicators such as lipid peroxidation (MDA content)...

Applications of 5-aminolevulinic acid on the physiological and biochemical characteristics of strawberry fruit during postharvest cold storage Ciência Rural
Li,Yi; Li,Zhiqiang; Wang,Liangju.
ABSTRACT: The compound 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is a key precursor in the biosynthesis of porphyrins, such as chlorophyll, heme and phytochromobilin, and has multiple physiological effects on plants. Varying concentrations of ALA (50mg L-1, 100mg L-1, and 150mg L-1) and water (control) were applied to white stage 'Sweet Charlie' strawberry fruit. All ALA treatments delayed senescence and improved the qualities of strawberries fruit during storage. Among the treatments, 150mg L-1 ALA was the most effective dosage concentration. Exogenously applied ALA significantly reduced the decay index, respiration rate, O2 - production rate (O2 -), H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, increased superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase activities (APX),...

Oxidative stability, fatty acid composition and health lipid indices of Longissimus dorsi muscle from Aberdeen Angus steers produced in different feeding systems Ciência Rural
Terevinto,Alejandra; Cabrera,María Cristina; Saadoun,Ali.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative and anti-oxidative status of unaged and aged Longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle obtained from a commercial abattoir. Also, fatty acid composition and calculated health lipid indices of meat were compared. Animals slaughtered were Aberdeen Angus steers raised in three typical feeding systems of Uruguay: (1) Pasture (n=10), (2) Pasture + Supplement (P+S) with corn grain (n=10), and (3) Feedlot (n=10). Feeding had no effect on lipid and protein oxidation but the antioxidant enzymes activities were affected as follows: superoxide dismutase (SOD): Pasture, Feedlot > P+S; catalase: Pasture > P+S, Feedlot; glutathione peroxidase (GPx): Feedlot > P+S > Pasture. Total antioxidant potential,...
