Cryobanking of aquatic species ArchiMer
Martinez-paramo, Sonia; Horvath, Akos; Labbe, Catherine; Zhang, Tiantian; Robles, Vanesa; Herraez, Paz; Suquet, Marc; Adams, Serean; Viveiros, Ana; Tiersch, Terrence R.; Cabrita, Elsa.
This review is focused on the applications of genome cryobanking of aquatic species including freshwater and marine fish, as well as invertebrates. It also reviews the latest advances in cryobanking of model species, widely used by the scientific community worldwide, because of their applications in several fields. The state of the art of cryopreservation of different cellular types (sperm, oocytes, embryos, somatic cells and primordial germ cells or early spermatogonia) is discussed focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure according to different applications. A special review on the need of standardization of protocols has also been carried out. In summary, this comprehensive review provides information on the practical details of...

Les échanges internationaux de crevettes pénéidés vivantes entre les pays du Pacifique, de l'Atlantique et de l'Europe ArchiMer
Michel, Alain.
The tremendous development of penaeid shrimp culture across the world over the past twenty years has led to international trade in eggs, larvae and spawners of the best shrimp species for aquaculture. Trade has involved, in particular, the following species: - Penaeus japonicus from Japan to Europe, the Pacific Islands and South America - P. monodon from South-East Asia to almost all tropical countries - P. vannamei and P. stylirostris from countries along the Pacific coast of South and Central America to the United States of America, the islands of the South Pacific, countries along the Atlantic coast of the Americas and certain countries in Africa. In the 1980s, research conducted by American and French teams enabled the breeding of stocks of spawners in...

Traceability of aquatic animals ArchiMer
Hastein, T; Hill, Bj; Berthe, Franck; Lightner, Dv.
Effective methods of traceability are urgently required for use in research as weil as in different types of aquaculture operations and to control trade in aquatic animais and praducts. In regard to the marking of fish, many different tagging methods have been described and the method to be used depends on the purpose and need for tagging. In contrast, for molluscs and crustaceans, only a few methods of marking such animais have been described, due to the practical difficulties. The authors first describe the different methods for tracing fish and fishery products, by means of external tags, such as Floy tags, Carlin tags and passive integrated transponder tags; chemical marking using inorganic substances su ch as silver nitrate or potassium nitrate,...

Infiltrated plaques resulting from an injury caused by the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris): a case report J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Haddad Jr,Vidal; Magalhães,Claudia Alves de.
Several species of octopus are considered venomous due to toxins present in the glands connected to their “beak”, which may be associated with hunt and kill of prey. Herein, we report an accident involving a common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) that injured an instructor during a practical biology lesson and provoked an inflamed infiltrated plaque on the hand of the victim. The lesion was present for about three weeks and was treated with cold compresses and anti-inflammatory drugs. It was healed ten days after leaving a hyperchromic macule at the bite site. The probable cause of the severe inflammation was the digestive enzymes of the glands and not the neurotoxins of the venom.

Fecundidad y primeras fases del desarrollo larval de la ascidia Ecteinascidia turbinata (Ascidiacea: Perophoridae) en Cuba OceanDocs
García-Cagide, A.; Hernández-Zanuy, A.; Cárdenas, A..
Zooids (the total amount of ovocytes, embryos, and larvae in larval release stage zooids), colonial (zooids mean fecundity per number of mature zooids on resorption or releasing larvae colonies) fecundity and the characteristics and duration of the early larval stages of the ascidian Ecteinascidia turbinata (Ascidiacea: Perophoridae) are given. The ascidian colonies were collected from non-estuarine mangroves in the NW region of Cuba. An average of 41 ± 12 ovocytes, embryos, and larvae were counted in 200 zooids of 17-31 mm length from 20 colonies gathered during different months and sites. Ascidian colonies of163 mm length and 252 zooids average produced 10590 larvae as average per colony during each generation-degeneration cycle that lasts about 40 days....

Assessing East African trade in seahorse species as a basis for conservation under international controls OceanDocs
Vincent, A.C.J.; McPherson, J.M..
1. Seahorses (Hippocampus spp.), many of which are listed as Vulnerable or Endangered on the IUCN Red List, are traded worldwide as souvenirs, aquarium fish and, primarily, for use in traditional medicines. Given concern over the sustainability of this trade, the genus was added to Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in May 2004. 2. This paper reports findings of the first ever survey of seahorse trade in Africa, conducted in Kenya and Tanzania in May and June 2000. 3. Seahorse trade in Kenya was found to be negligible, with approximately 10 live seahorses exported as aquarium fish annually. Until 1998, however, Kenya may have imported somewhere from 1 to 2.3 t of dried seahorses...

Pelegrín Morales, E.; Alvarez Capote, J.S..

Selected bacterial strains protect <i>Artemia</i> spp. from the pathogenic effects of <i>Vibrio proteolyticus</i> CW8T2 OMA
Verschuere, L.; Heang, H.; Criel, G.R.J.; Sorgeloos, P.; Verstraete, W..
In this study <i>Vibrio proteolyticus</i> CW8T2 has been identified as a virulent pathogen for <i>Artemia</i> spp. Its infection route has been visualized with transmission electron microscopy. The pathogen affected microvilli and gut epithelial cells, disrupted epithelial cell junctions, and reached the body cavity, where it devastated cells and tissues. In vivo antagonism tests showed that pre-emptive colonization of the culture water with nine selected bacterial strains protected <i>Artemia</i> juveniles against the pathogenic effects. Two categories of the selected strains could be distinguished: (i) strains providing total protection, as no mortality occurred 2 days after the experimental infection with <i>V....
