The OdinPubAfrica project (FUST-project: - see) developed a repository for scientific literature of African marine science. During the project other Odin groups, in the first place OdinCarsa were interested to develop a similar repository project for their region. As a result the OdinPubAfrica repository was extended to accept other Odin groups and was renamed to OceanDocs (http://iodeweb1.vliz.be/odin - http://www.oceandocs.net). This program proposal is based on the experiences of OdinPubAfrica and the interest by new partners. |

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO is one of the United Nation’s co-sponsoring partners for the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA). This is an abstracting and indexing service covering the world's literature on the science, technology, management, and conservation of marine, brackish water, and freshwater resources and environments, including their socio-economic and legal aspects. The ASFA bibliographic database contains over 820,000 references, with coverage since 1971 (some 800,000 are computer searchable from 1973 onwards). About 3,500 new bibliographic references are added each month to the database. Each bibliographic reference includes: the title of the document in its original language (all non-English titles are... |

The past intersessional period has been marked by a very significant change in the fields of networking, and electronic publication of data and information. The Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) have attracted major attention and have become the way to do business for a broad community of data and information users who did not previously have the means to do such exchanges, either locally or globally. Since IODE-XIV in October 1992, a large number of IODE data and information centres have begun to use the Internet and have established various types of servers to display and deliver data, information, and services. The rate of advancement of technology is something that has to be noted and taken into account by IODE. If one thinks back to October 1992,... |

Due to the need of the general data collection and information system in I.R. Iran, through a resolution of the 27th session of UNESCO general conference, the establishment of a NODC in Iran was facilitated. In 1993 the draft resolution 153 was adapted. Finally in 1995 the Iranian Oceanographic Data Centre (IRODC) was established in the Iranian National Center for Oceanography (INCO) and introduced as the node of the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) in Iran. By the end of 1993 IRODC was equipped to three 486-66Mhz AST computers which worked in a LAN network with NOVELL operating system. In 1995 with collaboration of UNESCO two Pentium 75Mhz IBM computers, an optical drive and a digitizer were added to the system. Today IRODC... |

The Flanders Marine Data Centre acquires and processes oceanographic data and information, and redistributes these according to the users’ needs. It integrates various types of data, checks their consistency, and performs the quality control. To realize the objectives, agreements about data exchange are made with partners at the regional, federal and international level. VMDC actively participates in international networks, primarily through the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO. |

The Sixteenth Session of the IOC Committee on IODE was attended by nearly 100 participants from 37 countries and a number of partner organizations. The Committee recommended specific support to the IODE Regional Coordinators. In view of the success of the “Pilot Project on the Revision of MEDI” the Committee recommended to (i) make the MEDI a permanent IODE programme; (ii) establish a Steering Group for MEDI; and (iii) include the MEDI software tool in IODE training activities and capacity building products/projects. The Committee recognized the importance for IODE, through its data centres, to actively participate in the planning of marine scientific and monitoring programmes. The Committee thus recommended the establishment of a Steering Group on... |
