Fatty acid methyl esters extracted from the cuticular surface of Artemia franciscana (Kellogs, 1906) (Crustacea: Anostraca) increase the swim speed of conspecific males Gayana
Tapia,Carola; Parra,Leonardo; Mutis,Ana; Gajardo,Gonzalo; Quiroz,Andrés.
ABSTRACT Previous researches have established that the swim speed of some microcrustaceans is influenced by chemical compounds emitted by conspecifics. We examined the hypothesis that cuticular compounds present on the body surface of A. franciscana, the most widespread member of Artemia genus, play a role in the swim speed of conspecific males. The movements (swim) of one male confronted to a sponge soaked with female or male cuticular extract, were recorded during 30 minutes and the swim speed was determined using a behavioral tracking software (Ethovision 3.1, Noldus Technologies). As a control, the movements of one male confronted to a sponge soaked with salty water or with a mixture of the solvents used in the extraction (chloroform-methanol), was...

IBSS Repository
In 2004 Iranian endemic species Artemia urmiana, Gunther 1890 (Anostraca, Аrtemiidae) was recorded in large numbers in Lake Koyashskoe (Crimea, Ukraine; 45°2’4” N, 36°11’ 44” E), which is the first finding of the crustacean outside its original range. It was previously thought to be confined exclusively to the water area of Lake Urmia (NW Iran; 37°35’ 28” N, 45°28’ 24” E). Considering the distance (1,111 km) and direction (NW) of spread (Fig. 1) we speculate on the possible role of migratory waterbirds in transporting viable cysts of A. urmiana over the Black Sea based on the analysis of relevant literature and own observations. We came to the conclusion that cysts were spread to the Koyashkoe Lake during spring migration most likely by Shelduck (Tadorna...

Genetic structure of bisexual and parthenogenetic populations of Artemia from Italian brackish-hypersaline waters ArchiMer
Nascetti, G; Bondanelli, P; Aldinucci, A; Cimmaruta, R.
Eight populations of Artemia displaying different reproduction modalities (amphigonic vs. parthenogenetic) and ploidies (diploid vs. polyploid) have been collected from Italian salt-works or brackish coastal lagoons, and their genetic structure has been investigated using allozyme electrophoresis. The results obtained on genetic differentiation showed that the Tyrrhenian bisexual samples (A. salina) are genetically homogeneous even between populations located in relatively faraway sites (Sardinia-Latium), having a moderate gene flow assisted by migratory waterfowl. The parthenogenetic samples (A. parthenogenetica) are genetically well differentiated both from the bisexual ones and among them, even when characterised by the same ploidy. Each sample presents...

Buchet, Vincent; Palvadeau, Hubert; Boussard, O..
Trials on the seabass weaning in atlantic marshes (Roux, 1993), have shown that the use of frozen prey improved this step and reduced his resulting stress. During the present study, which must confirmed these preliminary results, three alimentary sequences were tested. 1) natural zooplankton, weaning pellets, as control, 2) natural zooplankton, inert artemia (intensively produced), weaning pellets, 3) natural zooplankton, natural frozen zooplankton (harvested), weaning pellets. The achieved results show that weaning with intermediary phases (sequences 2 or 3) yield best results. Furthermore the phase with artemia yields, systematically, better results than with harvested zooplankton ; then artemia seems a excellent substitute food representing a...

Hernandorena, A.
Heat shocks at 40 degree were delivered to Artemia at the end of embryonic development and at the beginning of postembryonic development and their effects on subsequent development examined. Heat shocks delivered during preemergence development have no effect on subsequent development. Heat shocks delivered to newly hatched nauplii induce anomalies on the morphogenesis of thoracic and genital appendages. The induction of morphological anomalies by thermal conditions prevailing during early larval life makes it easier to integrate the morphological effects previously induced by nutritional conditions imposed to older feeding stages.

Selection of lactic acid bacteria as candidate probiotics and in vivo test on Artemia nauplii ArchiMer
Lamari, Faouzi; Sadok, Khouadja; Bakhrouf, Amina; Gatesoupe, Joel.
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from rotifer cultures in a marine hatchery to search for potential probiotics for marine animals. Fifteen strains were first selected among a total of 55, according to antibacterial activity against Vibrio sp. Among eight strains identified as Lactobacillus casei, four were highly adhesive, suggesting some ability for surface colonization. The other strains were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus dextrinicus, and Leuconostoc sp. To validate probiotic potential, Artemia were challenged against pathogenic Vibrio alginolyticus, with or without one of six selected LAB strains. The six strains protected Artemia against the pathogen, to some extent on condition that nutrient enrichment was provided.

Lamari, Faouzi.
Diseases cause major production losses in fish farms. Bacteria of the genus Vibrio are known as opportunistic pathogens, and have been associated with mass-mortality episodes. To cope with these disease outbreaks, fish farmers often resort to the use of antibiotics. However, preventive overuse has led to the emergence of resistant strains and frequent treatment failures. Probiotic lactic acid bacteria are increasingly used to improve the quality of seed production in aquaculture, while limiting antibiotic treatments. Microbial strains must fulfil several criteria to be evaluated as potential probiotics. In a first step, we selected and characterized 55 strains of lactic acid bacteria isolated from fish hatchery. The first selection criterion focused on the...

Probiotic and formaldehyde treatments of Artemia nauplii as food for larval pollack, Pollachius pollachius ArchiMer
Gatesoupe, Joel.
Formaldehyde was used to disinfect Artemia cysts and nauplii, while introducing two probiotics in the enrichment process: Bactocell (Pediococcus acidilactici) and Levucell (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). The disinfectant was selected due to its potential compatibility with probiotics, since it was more effective against Gram-negative bacteria than against lactic acid bacteria and yeast. However, the presence of formaldehyde reduced the intake of P. acidilactici in Artemia. Consequently, the disinfection was stopped before Bactocell supplementation to the nauplii fed to pollack (Pollachius pollachius) larvae. The mean weight of pollack was higher with this probiotic treatment. Growth was even better with the combination of Levucell and Bactocell, but the yeast...

Evaluation of microdiets versus live feeds on growth, survival and fatty acid composition of larval haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) ArchiMer
Blair, Tammy; Castell, Fisheries And Oceans Canada; Neil, Steven; D'Abramo, Louis; Cahu, Chantal; Harmon, Paul; Ogunmoye, Kehinde.
Until recently, it was considered impossible to feed newly hatched marine fish species with a compound diet. Substituting a compound diet for live prey was performed several weeks after hatching, depending on the species. Compound diets were well ingested at the early stage but larvae died with a gut full of food, suggesting that larvae were unable to digest the compound diet. The hypothesis was that younger larvae have insufficient digestive enzymes to thrive on compound diets, and that exogenous enzymes, provided from live prey, are necessary for early stages. The organogenesis of marine fish larvae is not completely achieved at hatching and histological studies have revealed that the anatomy of the digestive tract undergoes developmental changes over...

ArchiMer
Campillo, Albert.
The growth of post-larval P. serratus has been studied until the appearance of secondary sexual characters, in order to eliminate the influence of sex ratio on the mean wt. The influence of temp on intermolt period and number of molts was observed in male and female kept individually. Different sorts of food of natural origin have been tested. The rearing of post-larval lots metamorphosed at different times of the yr showed that the growth of P. serratus is conditioned not only by the temp, but also by the season. The food conversion ratio was defined in relation to the sex and age of the prawns. Shelters allowed the author to obtain a ratio of survival which varied post-larvae per square meter. The sex ratio established from several breedings as soon as...

Ben Naceur, H.; Ben Rejeb Jenhani, A.; Romdhane, M .S..

Artemia in aquatic toxicology: a review OMA
Persoone, G.; Wells, P.G..
Due to commercial availability of dried cysts from which live test material can be hatched at will, Artemia is used extensively in research and applied toxicology.Despite the extensive literature on dose-effect relationships of chemicals on brine shrimp, it was not until 1980 that an experimental protocol was developed for a simple acute toxicity test with Artemia nauplii, meeting the prerequisites for standardization. The reliability and accuracy of this short-term test were determined during an intercalibration exercise involving 80 laboratories and were found to be quite satisfactory. Consequently, the so-called ARC-test, which is one of the very few standardized marine toxicity tests, is now used routinely at the...

International study on Artemia : 17. Energy consumption in cysts and early larval stages of various geographical strains of Artemia OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Variations in dry weight, caloric content and ash content during cyst hatching and early larval development have been studied for various geographical strains of Artemia . In general, decapsulated cysts contain 30 to 40% more energy than freshly hatched nauplii; for Chaplin Lake and Buenos Aires Artemia this difference amounts to 57%. Ash contents increase as decapsulated cysts hatch into instar I and molt into instar II-III nauplii. Over a 24h larval developmental period individual dry weights and energy content of the nauplii decrease with 16-34% and 22-37% respectively.A small but significant correlation exists between the survival rate of starved nauplii and either the energy content of instar I and instar II-III...

Improvements in the decapsulation of Artemia cysts OMA
Bruggeman, E.; Baeza-Mesa, M.; Bossuyt, E.; Sorgeloos, P..
As described in our previous paper (Sorgeloos et al. , 1977) hypochlorite can be used as reactive agent to dissolve the lipoproteic chorion of Artemia cysts. Two commercial products are available worldwide, i.e. bleaching powder, chloride of lime Ca(OCL)2 and bleaching water NaOCl solutions. In Western Europe the latter product is the cheapest, whereas in the USA and Southeast Asia bleaching powder should be considered. Because the decapsulation process is a much more critical operation with bleaching powder, especially with regard to the viability of the embryos (Bruggeman et al., in preparation; Manzi, personal communication), we studied the use of technical NaOCl solutions in detail.

International study on Artemia: 55. Cyst membrane protein composition as a discriminant character in the genus Artemia OMA
Abatzopoulos, T.J.; Triantaphyllidis, G.; Beardmore, J.A.; Sorgeloos, P..
Isolated embryonic membranes (i.e. the outer cuticular membrane, the fibrous layer, the inner cuticular membrane and the hatching membrane) and homogenates of incubated, decapsulated cysts of 16 populations from five Artemia species (Crustacea, Anostraca) were examined by sodium dodecyl-sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Characteristic differences in major polypeptides between 45 and 205 kD were seen. These differences might be used as markers for identification of different Artemia species. The validity of this approach in characterizing Artemia populations is discussed.

Monitoring Biolog patterns and r/K-strategists in the intensive culture of Artemia juveniles OMA
Verschuere, L.; Dhont, J.; Sorgeloos, P.; Verstraete, W..
Artemia juveniles were cultured under intensive conditions in three series of six tanks at different times. Both plate counts and Biolog GN microtitre plates were used to monitor the microbial community. Repetitions of the Artemia cultures in time revealed significant differences in Biolog patterns and bacterial counts, showing that normal culture practices, including chlorination of the sea water, does not allow control of the associated microbial community. However, the similarity among the Biolog fingerprints of all 18 tanks as determined by the Pearson correlation coefficient was always high. Both observations together indicate that the microbial community which colonizes the culture tanks seems to be determined by...

Roles and potentials of Artemia in coastal saltworks OMA
Sorgeloos, P.; Tackaert, W..
The recent developments in aquaculture production of fish and shrimp have resulted in increased demands for Artemia cysts and biomass as valuable sources of life food. Solar salt works are suitable biotopes for the integrated exploitation of salt, Artemia and eventually fish or shrimp. Artemia may be present as a natural resource in local saltworks; however in some situations characteristics of the endemic strain might justify the introduction of another Artemia species to increase productivity.
