Supporting and Enhancing Development of Heterogeneous Ecological Knowledge among Resource Users in a Kenyan Seascape Ecology and Society
Crona, Beatrice Irene; Department of Systems Ecology; beatrice@ecology.su.se.
The heterogeneous nature of even small communities has been acknowledged, yet how such heterogeneity is reflected in local ecological knowledge (LEK) among groups of resource users in a community is poorly studied. This study examines the ecological knowledge held by fisher groups using differing gear and operating in different subsystems of a coastal seascape in south Kenya. Knowledge is compared to that of nonfishing groups and is analyzed with respect to the scales of ecological processes and disturbances affecting the ecosystem to identify mismatches of scale between local knowledge and ecological processes, as well as points of convergence upon which emerging scientific and local community information exchange can build and develop. Results reveal...

Spatio-temporal variation of the pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis (Crustacea, Decapoda, Penaeidae) associated to the seasonal overture of the sandbar in a subtropical lagoon Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Ferreira,Nicolle C; Freire,Andrea S.
On the southern Brazilian coast, the penaeid pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus paulensis (Pérez-Farfante, 1967) is intensively captured by both artisanal and industrial fisheries. In the Ibiraquera Lagoon, artisanal fishing of juvenile stocks has declined sharply over the last 15 years. The traditional management methods used by fishermen are no longer sustainable due to conflicts with the demands of tourism and weak environmental and public agencies. The dynamics of the timing of the artificial opening and natural reformation of a sandbar across the mouth of the lagoon are regarded as a central socio-ecological problem. We evaluated the abundance and biomass variation of F. paulensis throughout the year and along a spatial gradient measured from the sandbar...

Fishers' perceptions as indicators of the performance of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) ArchiMer
Leleu, Kevin; Alban, Frederique; Pelletier, Dominique; Charbonnel, Eric; Letourneur, Yves; Boudouresque, Charles F..
How users perceive the performance of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) is fundamental for the social acceptance of these zones. Moreover, their perceptions may be relevant for monitoring the effects of MPAs on extractive activities. This study analyzes artisanal fishers' perceptions of the performance of a north-western Mediterranean coastal MPA, which encompasses two no-take zones (NTZs). Three viewpoints have been considered: the effect on the personal activity of fishers, the effect on the local fishery and the effect on the ecosystem. In order to test the hypothesis that biomass export (spillover) - which had previously been evidenced from the two NTZs - may influence fishers' perceptions of NTZ effects, fishers' perceptions were compared with both...

Projet ANCRE-DMX2 : Indicateurs biologiques et écologiques pour une gestion durable des stocks de poissons DéMersauX profonds (100–700 m) d’intérêt halieutique à La Réunion ArchiMer
Roos, David; Aumond, Yoann; Huet, Jerome; Bruchon, Franck.

Evidence of habitat fragmentation affecting fish movement between the Patos and Mirim coastal lagoons in southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Burns,Marcelo D. M.; Garcia,Alexandre M.; Vieira,João P.; Bemvenuti,Marlise A.; Marques,David M. L. Motta; Condini,Vinicius.
The communication between the Patos and Mirim lagoon systems occurs via a natural channel called São Gonçalo. In 1977, a dam was built in this channel to prevent entrance of saline waters from Patos Lagoon estuary into the Mirim Lagoon. Our results showed an abrupt discontinuity in salinity and fish species distribution along the study sites. Sites below the dam showed salinity values higher than zero, whereas sites above had zero salinity values across all sampling periods. Marine and estuarine fishes (e.g., mullets Mugil platanus, M. curema, silversides Odontesthes argentinensis, Atherinella brasiliensis, sardine Brevoortia pectinata, and white croaker Micropogonias furnieri) were not captured above the dam. If these juvenile fishes could enter the Mirim...

Dolphin interactions with the mullet artisanal fishing on Southern Brazil: a qualitative and quantitative approach Zoologia
Simões-Lopes,Paulo C.; Fabián,Marta E.; Menegheti,João O..
A detailed analysis of the interactions between Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821) and the artisanal fishing of mullets (Mugil spp.) is presented at two localities in the south of Brazil: Laguna (Santa Catarina) and Inibé/Tramandaí (Rio Grande do Sul). Its behavioral strategies and the advantages of their association are re-described and quantified based on the success of the capture and on the selectivity of the prey sizes. The mullets are the main resource involved (92% to 75%) both at numerical level and as biomass. Twenty individuals of Tursiops truncatus participated in the interactions in Laguna and 9 in Imbé/Tramandaí. The participation and learning of calves is also reported.

Aspectos biológicos de Stellifer stellifer (Bloch) na pesca artesanal do camarão sete-barbas, Armação do Itapocoroy, Penha, Santa Catarina, Brasil Zoologia
Almeida,Laura Ribas de; Branco,Joaquim Olinto.
Stellifer stellifer (Bloch, 1790) is one among the most abundant ictiofauna species which are caught by sea-bob-shrimp's artisanal fishery in Armação do Itapocoroy. Aiming to analyze its population structure, a total of 1459 specimens were collected from July/1996 to August/1997. Stellifer stellifer presented lengths varying between 3,7 and 17,7 cm, macroscopic sex differentiation started from 6,0cm, with a higher frequency of females (sex ratio = 1:3,2). The relationship between length and weight was Wt = 0,0073Lt3,1415. First maturation size was determined for females (7,5 cm) and males (8,1 cm). The fishery acts in a similar way on juveniles and adults. Stellifer stellifer presented two spawning seasons, one in spring and another in autumn.

Bathymetric trends of northeastern Brazilian snappers (Pisces, Lutjanidae): implications for the reef fishery dynamic BABT
Frédou,Thierry; Ferreira,Beatrice Padovani.
The investigation of bathymetric distribution of five snappers caught along the Brazilian Northeastern coast by artisanal fleets through the analysis of the catch composition and relative abundance (CPUE) showed that, on the overall, fished mean size increased along depth and that particular species dominated the catch according to the depth strata. Mutton snapper, L. analis, yellowtail snapper, L. chrysurus, and dog snapper, L. jocu were mainly caught at intermediate depth (20-80m) whereas lane snapper, L. synagris, and silk snapper, L. vivanus, inhabit respectively shallow (<20m) and deep (>80 m) waters. Each fleet category exploited preferentially a particular combination of species and their size range. The fleet dynamic of the Northeast Brazil...

Evidences of El Niño effects on the mullet fishery of the Patos Lagoon estuary BABT
Vieira,João Paes; Garcia,Alexandre Miranda; Grimm,Alice Marlene.
Based on biological and meteorological long-term database (1979-1983 and 1996-2000), we analyzed the variation in the juvenile recruitment and artisanal fishery landings of the mullet (Mugil platanus) in the Patos Lagoon estuary and its relationships with the regional rainfall and estuarine salinity anomalies during two strong El Niño events (1982-83 and 1997-98). Juvenile and adult mullets declined in abundance under the high rainfall and near-zero salinity that prevailed in the estuary during both El Niño events. We proposed two different hypotheses to explain the El Niño-induced effects on the juvenile and adult stages of the mullet in the estuary. First, high freshwater outflow during a very strong El Niño might render ineffective the mechanism of...
