The heterogeneous nature of even small communities has been acknowledged, yet how such heterogeneity is reflected in local ecological knowledge (LEK) among groups of resource users in a community is poorly studied. This study examines the ecological knowledge held by fisher groups using differing gear and operating in different subsystems of a coastal seascape in south Kenya. Knowledge is compared to that of nonfishing groups and is analyzed with respect to the scales of ecological processes and disturbances affecting the ecosystem to identify mismatches of scale between local knowledge and ecological processes, as well as points of convergence upon which emerging scientific and local community information exchange can build and develop. Results reveal... |

How users perceive the performance of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) is fundamental for the social acceptance of these zones. Moreover, their perceptions may be relevant for monitoring the effects of MPAs on extractive activities. This study analyzes artisanal fishers' perceptions of the performance of a north-western Mediterranean coastal MPA, which encompasses two no-take zones (NTZs). Three viewpoints have been considered: the effect on the personal activity of fishers, the effect on the local fishery and the effect on the ecosystem. In order to test the hypothesis that biomass export (spillover) - which had previously been evidenced from the two NTZs - may influence fishers' perceptions of NTZ effects, fishers' perceptions were compared with both... |

The communication between the Patos and Mirim lagoon systems occurs via a natural channel called São Gonçalo. In 1977, a dam was built in this channel to prevent entrance of saline waters from Patos Lagoon estuary into the Mirim Lagoon. Our results showed an abrupt discontinuity in salinity and fish species distribution along the study sites. Sites below the dam showed salinity values higher than zero, whereas sites above had zero salinity values across all sampling periods. Marine and estuarine fishes (e.g., mullets Mugil platanus, M. curema, silversides Odontesthes argentinensis, Atherinella brasiliensis, sardine Brevoortia pectinata, and white croaker Micropogonias furnieri) were not captured above the dam. If these juvenile fishes could enter the Mirim... |

Portunus spinimanus Latreille, 1819 is one abundant Portunidae speeies whieh are eaught by sea-bob-shrimps artisanal fishery in Armaçãodo Itapoeoroy,Penha, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Aiming to analyze its population strueture, a total of 995 males and 1925 fernaleswere eollected by means of overtrawl frorn January to Decernber 1995, between the depthsof 610 10meters,in lhe periodsof morning, afternoonand evening. The width variation of lhe carapaee ranged írom 3.0 to 14.0 em in the males and 3.0 to 11.0emin females. The species presents growth isometric and the males reach width and weight assintoticand bigger that lhe females. The estirnatedfirst maturation width was between 6.8 and 7.6 em, reached with lhe approxirnated age of 15 months. The artisanal fishery... |

Stellifer stellifer (Bloch, 1790) is one among the most abundant ictiofauna species which are caught by sea-bob-shrimp's artisanal fishery in Armação do Itapocoroy. Aiming to analyze its population structure, a total of 1459 specimens were collected from July/1996 to August/1997. Stellifer stellifer presented lengths varying between 3,7 and 17,7 cm, macroscopic sex differentiation started from 6,0cm, with a higher frequency of females (sex ratio = 1:3,2). The relationship between length and weight was Wt = 0,0073Lt3,1415. First maturation size was determined for females (7,5 cm) and males (8,1 cm). The fishery acts in a similar way on juveniles and adults. Stellifer stellifer presented two spawning seasons, one in spring and another in autumn. |

The investigation of bathymetric distribution of five snappers caught along the Brazilian Northeastern coast by artisanal fleets through the analysis of the catch composition and relative abundance (CPUE) showed that, on the overall, fished mean size increased along depth and that particular species dominated the catch according to the depth strata. Mutton snapper, L. analis, yellowtail snapper, L. chrysurus, and dog snapper, L. jocu were mainly caught at intermediate depth (20-80m) whereas lane snapper, L. synagris, and silk snapper, L. vivanus, inhabit respectively shallow (<20m) and deep (>80 m) waters. Each fleet category exploited preferentially a particular combination of species and their size range. The fleet dynamic of the Northeast Brazil... |
