Effect of potassium sources on potato tuber yield and chip quality Horticultura Brasileira
Silva,Giovani O; Bortoletto,Antonio C; Carvalho,Agnaldo DF; Pereira,Arione S.
ABSTRACT Many potato producers for fry industry changed from the use of potassium chloride to potassium sulfate, as there is a concept that the use of this source improves tuber quality. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of these two potassium sources on yield, specific gravity and chip color of potato chipping cultivars. The experiment was carried out on a Dystrophic Red Latosol, in Canoinhas, Brazil, in spring season 2016. Treatments consisted of two potato cultivars, BRSIPR Bel and Atlantic, and two sources of potassium, chloride and sulfate, applied in the furrow at the planting time, in rates based on soil analysis. Experimental design was a randomized complete block in a split-plot arrangement with four replications. Main plots were...

Factors determining the distribution of foraminiferal assemblages in Port Joinville Harbor (Ile d'Yeu, France): the influence of pollution ArchiMer
Debenay, Jean-pierre; Tsakiridis, Erica; Soulard, René; Grossel, Hubert.
Port Joinville harbor is located on an island. Thus, it receives only a few freshwater inputs, contrary to most of the areas where the influence of pollution on foraminiferal assemblages has been studied. The pollution in the harbor mainly results from the boats, including cleaning, painting and outfall of oil and motor-fuel.A total of 59 sediment samples was collected at three sampling periods (November-December 1997, May 1998 and September 1998). These samplings were supplemented by the study of algal flora and macrobenthos and by the study of water circulation by means of six stations where water was collected every hour during a tide cycle. Contaminants were analyzed in the last series of 17 samples. Total assemblages were used for this study. This...

Characterization and standardization of the Atlantic albacore French pelagic trawl fishery ArchiMer
Nikolic, Natacha; Lauretta, Matthew; Patucca, Audrey; Morandeau, Gilles.
We compiled and analysed logbook data from the French trawl albacore fishery covering the period 1991–2015. The dataset comprised catch and effort data for the French fleet operating in the Bay of Biscay and Celtic Sea, as well as spatiotemporal and gear characteristics. Generalized linear modelling was used to model spatial, seasonal, environmental, and gear covariates of fleet CPUE rates. A long-term index of relative abundance is provided that can be integrated into the stock assessment of North Atlantic albacore. The analysis revealed higher albacore CPUE associated with relatively low sea surface temperature and distinct seasonal effects. The derived abundance trend for the French trawl fishery agreed with the estimated time series of stock abundance...

Dynamic storage of glacial CO2 in the Atlantic Ocean revealed by boron [CO32-] and pH records ArchiMer
Chalk, T. B.; Foster, G. L.; Wilson, P. A..
The origin and carbon content of the deep water mass that fills the North Atlantic Basin, either Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) or North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) is suggested to influence the partitioning of CO2 between the ocean and atmosphere on glacial-interglacial timescales. Fluctuations in the strength of Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) have also been shown to play a key role in global and regional climate change on timescales from annual to millennial. The North Atlantic is an important and well-studied ocean basin but many proxy records tracing ocean circulation in this region over the last glacial cycle are challenging to interpret. Here we present new B/Ca-[CO32-] and boron isotope-pH data from sites spanning the North...

Beyond Post-release Mortality: Inferences on Recovery Periods and Natural Mortality From Electronic Tagging Data for Discarded Lamnid Sharks ArchiMer
Bowlby, Heather D.; Benoît, Hugues P.; Joyce, Warren; Sulikowski, James; Coelho, Rui; Domingo, Andrés; Cortés, Enric; Hazin, Fabio; Macias, David; Biais, Gerard; Santos, Catarina; Anderson, Brooke.
Accurately characterizing the biology of a pelagic shark species is critical when assessing its status and resilience to fishing pressure. Natural mortality (M) is well known to be a key parameter determining productivity and resilience, but also one for which estimates are most uncertain. While M can be inferred from life history, validated direct estimates are extremely rare for sharks. Porbeagle (Lamna nasus) and shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) are presently overfished in the North Atlantic, but there are no directed fisheries and successful live release of bycatch is believed to have increased. Understanding M, post-release mortality (PRM), and variables that affect mortality are necessary for management and effective bycatch mitigation. From 177...

Glacial-to-deglacial 14C reservoir ages of surface and deep waters from the mid- and low-latitude Atlantic ArchiMer
Blamer, Sven.
The 14C reservoir age of ocean surface waters shows small-scale spatial and temporal variations. Accordingly, correct estimates of reservoir ages are crucial for any reconstruction of a precise radiocarbon-based chronology of marine sediments. To meet this target in the mid- and low- latitude Atlantic we obtained both 14C reservoir ages and an absolute age model for the glacial-to-deglacial sections of four marine sediment cores by means of the ‘14C Plateau Tuning Technique’. This method is independent of any common conversion scheme of 14C ages. The resulting empiric reservoir ages were compared with reservoir age estimates based on model simulations.

Future change in ocean productivity: Is the Arctic the new Atlantic? ArchiMer
Yool, A.; Popova, E. E.; Coward, A. C..
One of the most characteristic features in ocean productivity is the North Atlantic spring bloom. Responding to seasonal increases in irradiance and stratification, surface phytopopulations rise significantly, a pattern that visibly tracks poleward into summer. While blooms also occur in the Arctic Ocean, they are constrained by the sea-ice and strong vertical stratification that characterize this region. However, Arctic sea-ice is currently declining, and forecasts suggest this may lead to completely ice-free summers by the mid-21st century. Such change may open the Arctic up to Atlantic-style spring blooms, and do so at the same time as Atlantic productivity is threatened by climate change-driven ocean stratification. Here we use low and high-resolution...

Macrophytobenthos des platiers rocheux intertidaux et semi-exposés da la région de Safi-Essaouira (Maroc occidental) ArchiMer
Birje, J; Verlaque, M; Poydenot, F.
In 1990, a study of the phytobenthos of the rocky intertidal platforms in the Safi-Essaouira region (Sidi Boulbra, Western Morocco) was carried out at three sites. The intertidal zonation was analysed along permanent transects, and a qualitative and quantitative study of two characteristic units of the eulittoral vegetation - the vegetation belt of Fucus spiralis and the communities of Florideophyceae - was made. One hundred and twenty-nine macroalgal taxa and three phases were listed: 19 Ulvophyceae, 19 Fucophyceae, 1 Bangiophyceae and 93 Florideophyceae. The intertidal communities of the area are typical of semi-exposed and unpolluted platforms of Western Morocco, in the eulittoral zone, most of the typical Fucales that occur along the NE Atlantic coasts...

Les pêches professionnelles dans les estuaires de la Loire et de l'Adour ArchiMer
Guerault, Daniel; Desaunay, Yves; Beillois, Pierre; Prouzet, Patrick; Martinet, Jean-pierre; Cuende, François - Xavier.
The exploitation of amphihaline species by marine and freshwater commercial fishermen in the Loire estuary in 1989, and by marine commercial fishermen in the Adour estuary from 1985-1991 is described in this study. This fishery employs 320 fishermen and represents a commercial value of 38 million FF. This is mainly due to the exploitation of glass eel, especially in the Loire River, the landings of which have decreased alarmingly. In the Adour River, the diversity of the exploited species and the total commercial value of drift gillnet catches - on the average 43% - in this fishery are high. The landings of migratory salmonid species are high and they may attain 25% of the total commercial value. This study emphasizes the uniqueness, the socio-economic...

Données sur la reproduction et la taille de première maturité du homard Homarus gammarus d'Iroise et du golfe de Gascogne ArchiMer
Latrouite, Daniel; Leglise, Michel; Raguenes, Gérard.
This paper deals with the lobsters caught by French fishermen off the "Conquet" (Iroise sea) and off "Ile d'Yeu" (Biscay Bay) on the French atlantic coast. The size at first maturity, defined as the size at which 50 % of female are able to reproduce, is deduced from the analysis of size frequency in landings. It is also shown that more than 50 % of the mature female are spawing each year ; the periods of hatching in the natural environment are also established.

Baitboat as a tuna aggregating device ArchiMer
Hallier, Jean-pierre; Delgado De Molina, A.
The original baitboat fishing technique using a permanent association between the fishing boat and the tuna school has been developed by the baitboat fleet of Dakar, Senegal and is also in use in the Canary Islands. This new fishing technique, the result of 20 years of improvements still on, has induced a dramatic increase of the catch yields which, in turn, has sustained the survival and even a recent development of the fleet. This technique is based on the aggregating behaviour of tropical tunas. However, it contains a dynamic component which is not found in tuna fishing on drifting or anchored fads. The specifications of the method, its refinement over the years and its main consequences for the fishery are described together with the school exchanges...

Drifting FADs used in tuna fisheries: an ecological trap? ArchiMer
Marsac, F; Fonteneau, Alain; Menard, Frederic.
This paper discusses the hypothesis that small tunas and the various species found in association with drifting fads (such as "mahi-mahi", rainbow runner, wahoo, etc.) may be biologically trapped by such a strong association. Massive seeding of drifting artificial fads was observed worldwide during recent years. In this hypothesis, we suggest that fads may alter some biological characteristics of epipelagic populations associated with them: migration, growth, condition factors, predation and natural mortality. As fads are most often used in the equatorial currents, they tend to exhibit zonal drift. Therefore, the associated populations would be artificially transferred from one part of the ocean to another, when they would show different movement patterns...

The works carried out during this course (March-August 2015) alowed to correct the datasets and to study the variation in catches of albacore tuna from 1967 to 2014 (except for the years 1987 to 1990) based on 3 gears: the trolling line, the line with cane and the pelagic trawl. Simultaneously, key ICCAT delivred was provide information to expert groups, with a view to defining fishing quotas. Catches released and fishing effort (defined by the number of vessels and the time spent at sea) have varied considerably over these 50 years, and have been increasing in recent years, after having decreased sharply. Fishing today is concentrated on the edge of the continental shelf, whereas it was very oceanic before. It is mainly juveniles that are caught, while...
