MARINE LIFE OF URUGUAY: CRITICAL UPDATE AND PRIORITIES FOR FUTURE RESEARCH Gayana
Calliari,Danilo; Defeo,Omar; Cervetto,Guillermo; Gómez,Mónica; Giménez,Luis; Scarabino,Fabrizio; Brazeiro,Alejandro; Norbis,Walter.
The marine areas of Uruguay consist of the Río de la Plata estuary and the adjacent shelf and slope, part of the Subtropical Convergence Ecosystem. In this paper, the main advances in the knowledge of marine life in these areas (the known) are reviewed in order to discuss future lines of research (the unknown). Information has been separately analysed for the plankton, nekton, and benthos in each of 3 areas-the littoral, the shelfs and the "open ocean". Current knowledge of marine life is uneven among the groups and areas. In the case of the plankton, research has concentrated on the near-shore waters and focused on taxonomy and distribution. Little is known about the responses of organisms to environmental variability and about biological processes. The...

Influence of seamounts at the Atlantic Ocean on modification of the bioluminiscence and plankton characteristics IBSS Repository
Tokarev, Yu. N.; Bityukov, E. P.; Williams, R..
The bioluminescence and plankton characteristics in the euphotic layer over 11 seamounts in the Atlantic Ocean were studied. Investigations were carried out along the axis of flow over the mounts. Bathyphotometric measurements (1606 casts) were taken from 2 m to 100 m depths at 87 stations over the various seamounts with a vertical resolution of 1 m. Plankton samples were taken with Juday nets and submersible electric pumps with 36 m3• •h-1 performance. The bioluminescence characteristics varied over seamounts with different geomorphological features. The hydrodynamic gyres, created by the bottom elevations, and the upwelling of water with biogenic elements, also seem to have effects on the quantitative characteristics of the plankton. The largest changes...

A closer look at Batillipes dicrocercus and new records of Batillipes potiguarensis (Tardigrada: Arthrotardigrada) from the Brazilian coast with comments on intra- and interspecific variability Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Santos,Érika; Gomes Jr,Edivaldo; Rocha,Clélia M. C. da; Bartels,Paul J.; Fontoura,Paulo.
ABSTRACT Batillipes specimens collected in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, on the Brazilian Coast (Campos Basin and Potiguar Basin) with a bifurcated caudal appendage similar to B. dicrocercus Pollock, 1970 were assigned to B. potiguarensis Santos, da Rocha, Gomes Jr & Fontoura, 2017. This species was described as having a roundish caudal protrusion but, as shown in this study, it exhibits intraspecific variability of the morphology of the caudal apparatus. The examination of specimens of B. dicrocercus from the type locality (Massachussetts, U.S.A.) and the analysis of the original description and two subsequent emended descriptions, one from the Gulf of Mexico (U.S.A.) and another from the Mediterranean Sea, used for comparison, revealed important...

Oceanic mercury concentrations on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar decreased between 1989 and 2012 ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Knoery, Joel; Boye, Marie; Marusczak, Nicolas; Thomas, Bastien; Courau, Philippe; Sprovieri, Francesca.
Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal that threatens the health of aquatic ecosystems and fish consumers. Its natural cycle has been deeply perturbed by Anthropogenic Hg emissions have deeply perturbed its natural cycle, especially since the start of the Industrial Revolution circa 1850 CE. Anthropogenic Hg emissions from North America and Europe have decreased by a factor of two in the last decades following the implementation of strict regulations. The response of North Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean waters to this decrease remains poorly documented by field observations. A comparison of results obtained between 1989 and 2012 shows a significant decrease of Hg concentrations in waters on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar. West of Gibraltar, the Hg decrease...

An Annual Cycle of Submesoscale Vertical Flow and Restratification in the Upper Ocean ArchiMer
Yu, Xiaolong; Naveira Garabato, Alberto C.; Martin, Adrian P; Buckingham, Christian; Brannigan, Liam; Su, Zhan.
Numerical simulations suggest that submesoscale turbulence may transform lateral buoyancy gradients into vertical stratification, and thus restratify the upper ocean via vertical flow. However, the observational evidence for this restratifying process has been lacking due to the difficulty in measuring such ephemeral phenomena, particularly over periods of months to years. This study presents an annual cycle of the vertical velocity and associated restratification estimated from two nested clusters of meso- and submesoscale-resolving moorings, deployed in a typical mid-ocean area of the Northeast Atlantic. Vertical velocities inferred using the non-diffusive density equation are substantially stronger at submesoscales (horizontal scales of 1-10 km) than at...

Fishing fleet typology, economic dependence, and species landing profiles of the French fleets in the Bay of Biscay, 2000-2006 ArchiMer
Daures, Fabienne; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Van Iseghem, Sylvie; Trenkel, Verena.
Thirty French fleets fishing primarily in the Bay of Biscay were defined based on techno-economic input criteria: i) 18 fishing gear or gear combinations ii) the location of fishing grounds visited during a year (<12 nautical miles from coast, beyond 12 nm or both) and iii) total vessel length (<20 m for trawlers and other gears <24 m). The fleets were then characterised in terms of horse power, economic dependence on a list of nine dominant commercial species (sole, Nephrops, sea bass, hake, monkfish, anchovy, cuttlefish, sardine and squid) and their contribution to the landings of these species from the Bay of Biscay. Most fleets derived the majority of their income from one or two among the nine species. Species dependencies changed little...

Using the ALADYM simulation model for exploring the effects of management scenarios on fish population metrics ArchiMer
Spedicato, Maria Teresa; Poulard, Jean-charles; Politou, Chrissi-yianna; Radtke, Krzysztof; Lembo, Giuseppe; Petitgas, Pierre.
Simulation of fisheries systems is a widely used approach that integrates monitoring and assessment tools. We applied the ALADYM (age-length based dynamic model) simulation model to three different studies aimed at investigating correlations between pressure and population metrics, exploring the viability of different mortality levels in long-term scenarios and predicting the effects of combined management measures. Uncertainty was incorporated into the simulations following the Monte Carlo paradigm. Three stocks were used for these exercises: red mullet in the central-southern Tyrrhenian Sea and European hake in both the Bay of Biscay and the Aegean Sea. The analysis of the relationships between total mortality and indicators highlighted significant...

Marine turtle interaction with purse-seine fishery in the Atlantic and Indian oceans: Lessons for management ArchiMer
Bourjea, Jerome; Clermont, Sandra; Delgado, Alicia; Murua, Hilario; Ruiz, Jon; Ciccione, Stephane; Chavance, Pierre.
Bycatch of endangered marine turtles is a growing issue for the management of all fisheries, including the oceanic purse-seine fishery. The aim of this study was to assess the spatial and temporal variation in bycatch rates of these species in the entire European purse-seine fishery operating in the Atlantic and Indian oceans. The study was based on data collected through observer programs from 1995 to 2011. During that period, a total of 15 913 fishing sets were observed, including 6 515 on Drifting Fish Aggregating Devices (DFADs) and 9 398 on free swimming schools, representing a global coverage of 10.3% and 5.1% of the total fishing activity in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, respectively. Moreover, from 2003 to 2011, 14 124 specific observations were...

Bio-economic management strategy evaluation of deepwater stocks using the FLBEIA model ArchiMer
Garcia, Dorleta; Urtizberea, Agurtzane; Diez, Guzman; Gil, Juan; Marchal, Paul.
Deepwater fish are characterized by long lifespans, late maturity and low productivity. This implies slow recovery from low biomass levels and it is, therefore, important to manage these stocks correctly to avoid overfishing. However, these stocks are generally data poor, which it makes difficult to apply quantitative assessment models on which to base their management. The management strategy evaluation (MSE) approach consists in evaluating the performance of management strategies by simulation before their implementation. In the evaluation, the main sources of uncertainty in a fishery system and its management process should be taken into account in order to find robust management strategies. Thus, the MSE approach is relevant to the management of...

Spatial and Seasonal Variability of Mixed Layer Depth in the Tropical Atlantic at 10 °W using 40 Years of Observation Data ArchiMer
Kouame Kanga, Désiré; Kouassi Aka, Marcel; Trokourey, Albert; Toualy, Elisée; N’guessan, Benjamin K.; Brehmer, Patrice; Ostrowski, Marek.
The spatial and seasonal variability of the mixed layer depth (MLD) was studied using hydrological data from several databases collected over the period October 1973 to March 2017 at 10 °W between latitudes 2 °N and 10 °S in the Gulf of Guinea. The density threshold method with 0.03 kg m-3 criterion was used to calculate the MLD. In the equatorial band, the seasonal average MLD is 20 m whatever the season. At 6 °S and 10 °S, the MLD is relatively higher during the cold season. The MLD varies between 21 and 37 m at 6 °S, and the seasonal averages MLD are 21 and 40 m respectively during the hot and cold seasons. At 10 °S, during the hot season, the MLD varies between 28 and 52 m and the seasonal average is 39.5 m. During the cold season, the MLD varies...

Nitrogen fixation in the eastern Atlantic reaches similar levels in the Southern and Northern Hemisphere ArchiMer
Fonseca-batista, Debany; Dehairs, Frank; Riou, Virginie; Fripiat, Francois; Elskens, Marc; Deman, Florian; Brion, Natacha; Queroue, Fabien; Bode, Maya; Auel, Holger.
Euphotic layer dinitrogen (N-2) fixation and primary production (PP) were measured in the eastern Atlantic Ocean (38 degrees N-21 degrees S) using N-15(2) and C-13 bicarbonate tracer incubations. This region is influenced by Saharan dust deposition and waters with low nitrogen to phosphorus (N/P) ratios originating from the Subantarctic and the Benguela upwelling system. Depth-integrated rates of N-2 fixation in the north (0 degrees N-38 degrees N) ranged from 59 to 370 mu mol N m(-2) d(-1), with the maximal value at 19 degrees N under the influence of the northwest African upwelling. Diazotrophic activity in the south (0 degrees S-21 degrees S), though slightly lower, was surprisingly close to observations in the north, with values ranging from 47 to 119...

Dynamic Time Warping of Paleomagnetic Secular Variation Data ArchiMer
Hagen, Cedric J; Reilly, Brendan T; Stoner, Joseph S; Creveling, Jessica R.
We present and make publicly available a dynamic programming algorithm to simultaneously align the inclination and declination vector directions of sedimentary paleomagnetic secular variation data. This algorithmgenerates a library of possible alignments through the systematic variation of assumptions about the relative accumulation rate and shared temporal overlap of two or more time-series. The paleomagnetist can then evaluate this library of reproducible and objective alignments using available geologic constraints, statistical methods, and expert knowledge. We apply the algorithm to align previously (visually) correlated medium to high accumulation rate northern North Atlantic Holocene deposits (101– 102 cm/ka) with strong radiocarbon control. Morphological Trends of Four Manila Clam Populations (Venerupis philippinarum) on the French Atlantic Coast: Identified Spatial Patterns and Their Relationship to Environmental Variability ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; Bru, Noelle; Barranger, Melanie; Gallon, Laurent; D'Amico, Franck.
For species' dynamics highly influenced by environmental conditions, sustainable management for conservation and/or exploitation purposes requires the ability to segregate natural processes from anthropogenic impacts. In this context, identification of phenotypic variations in morphological patterns, and clarification of the mechanisms involved, constitute useful tools to identify adequate management measures from Europe-wide to local conditions. Although such approaches are already used effectively in the management of fish stocks, they are more recent for bivalve stocks, which are also good candidates for such management tools. The current study examines morphological patterns in the Manila clam (Venerupis philippinarum) through morphometric studies of 4...

Mortalité de l'huître Crassostrea gigas dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron: étude de la variabilité spatiale de son environnement et de sa biologie par un système d'informations géographiques (SIG) ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Le Moine, Olivier; Faury, Nicole; Razet, Daniel; Geairon, Philippe; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The summer mortality patterns was studied in 1996 on the Ronce-les-Bains oyster bank (175 ha), located on the southern part of the Bay Marennes-Oleron (Atlantic coastline). Studies on growth, sexual maturation, survival rates and environmental variables were compared at fifteen experimental sites (on- and off-bottom culture). After 7 months, cumulative mortality reached 8-19 and 23-33% for off-bottom and on-bottom culture, respectively which is significantly higher for the latter case. A seasonal mortality trend was noted, with a significant increase related to air temperature greater than 20 degrees C and with a significant pre-spawning glycogen catabolism. Based on soft tissue flesh growth results from both types of culture, several empirical models were...

Assessment of impacts from human activities on ecosystem components in the Bay of Biscay in the early 1990s ArchiMer
Lorance, Pascal; Bertrand, Jacques; Brind'Amour, Anik; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Trenkel, Verena.
The ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management and, more specifically, the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive require the assessment of the state and dynamics of an ecosystem in order to determine suitable management strategies. This paper takes an analytical approach to assess the state of the Bay of Biscay ecosystem in the early 1990s, chosen as a period of reference because key monitoring data series have been collected since then. To assess the state of the ecosystem, the pressures exerted by six broad categories of human activities were examined. A literature review of the ecosystem components was made and a component tree was tailored according to data availability. Data rich components were subdivided into subcomponents for their...

The timing of deglacial circulation changes in the Atlantic ArchiMer
Waelbroeck, C.; Skinner, L. C.; Labeyrie, L.; Duplessy, J. -c.; Michel, E.; Vazquez Riveiros, Natalia; Gherardi, J. M.; Dewilde, F..
Well-dated benthic foraminifer oxygen isotopic records (delta O-18) from different water depths and locations within the Atlantic Ocean exhibit distinct patterns and significant differences in timing over the last deglaciation. This has two implications: on the one hand, it confirms that benthic delta O-18 cannot be used as a global correlation tool with millennial-scale precision, but on the other hand, the combination of benthic isotopic records with independent dating provides a wealth of information on past circulation changes. Comparing new South Atlantic benthic isotopic data with published benthic isotopic records, we show that (1) circulation changes first affected benthic delta O-18 in the 1000-2200 m range, with marked decreases in benthic delta...

A synthesis of the sedimentary evolution of the Demerara Plateau (Central Atlantic Ocean) from the late Albian to the Holocene ArchiMer
Fanget, Anne-sophie; Loncke, Lies; Pattier, France; Marsset, Tania; Roest, Walter; Tallobre, Cédric; Durrieu De Madron, Xavier; Hernandez Molina, F. Javier.
The Demerara Plateau, off the French Guiana and Surinam margin, corresponds to a prominent sub-horizontal marginal plateau. The interpretation of a large set of seismic data acquired along the Demerara Plateau and integration with previous seismic stratigraphy and drill studies enables a better understanding of the sedimentary evolution of the outer Demerara marginal plateau. Since the end of the transform activity (late Albian), three sedimentary evolutionary stages have been identified. 1) The Pre-contourite Stage (late Albian to early Miocene) is strongly controlled by the structure of the margin that influences the distribution pattern of post-transform deposits through differential thermal subsidence between transform and divergent segments. 2) The...
