FACTORS INFLUENCING FARMERS' SELECTION OF A MILK HANDLER AgEcon
Kilmer, Richard L.; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Carley, Dale H..
A structural probit model is estimated to determine the change in the probability of selecting a milk handler. Cooperatives are thought to have lower prices and higher deductions than independent milk handlers and these factors reduce the probability that a farmer will select a cooperative by 0.39 and 0.32. Cooperatives are thought to have better services and an assured market and payment than independent mile handlers and these factors increase the probability that a farmer will select a cooperative by 0.20 and 0.26. This indicates that many cooperative members value monetary characteristics over non-monetary characteristics.

A hedonic model of lamb carcass attributes AgEcon
Farrell, Terence C.; Hopkins, David L..
Lamb carcass value is widely reported to be a function of lean meat yield, which is the relationship between muscle, fat and bone. Five retailers and five wholesalers assessed 47 lamb carcasses from diverse genotypes and scored seven attributes. A hedonic model reveals that conformation attributes were more highly valued (16 c/kg) relative to yield characteristics (4 c/kg). Meat colour and fat distribution were significant for retailers, but less important for wholesalers. Genotype was not a strong indicator of conformation. Eye muscle area and depth were correlated with Fat C; however, these were not significant. These results indicate that carcass conformation, meat colour and fat distribution should be incorporated into carcass grading models.

Minority compounds and sensory analysis evaluation of Coffea arabica var. c aturra cultivated in three different altitudinal ranges Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Cruz-Bolivar,Jennifer Tatiana; Rodríguez-Pérez,Wilson; Suárez-Salazar,Juan Carlos; Ordoñez-Espinosa,Claudia Mercedes; Vega-Cano,Gustavo Adolfo.
Abstract The composition of minority compounds in samples of roasted and ground coffee (Coffea arabica var. caturra) cultivated in three altitudinal ranges 1300-1400, 1400-1600, 1600-1800 m. a. s. l., in the Huila department of Colombia were determined. The samples were collected in July of 2012. pH, total acidity and total lipids were measured. Subsequently, the composition of total lipids after esterification and gas chromatography analysis coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was established. Quality cup test considering the following attributes: fragrance/aroma, taste, residual flavor, acidity, body, uniformity, balance, clean cup, sweetness, quality and note, were performed. No statistically significant difference (p <0.05) in pH,...

Unveiling Peruvian organic consumers demand for organics: A latent class approach Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Higuchi,Angie; Dávalos,Jorge.
A. Higuchi, and J. Dávalos. 2016. Unveiling Peruvian organic consumers demand for organics: A latent class approach. Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(3): 408-417. This paper seeks to identify the consumer segments that constitute the market for organic products in Metropolitan Lima, Peru. The employed classification methodology, Latent Class Analysis, is implemented within a structural framework that is capable of identifying key relations such as the link between educational attainment and organic product consumption. This study builds on primary data gathered at the study site involving interviews with 547 organic consumers at a limited number of bio-fairs and bio-shops. Our results identify two segments: core and middle-level consumers. Although both segments exhibit...
