Application of artificial neural networks as an alternative to volumetric water balance in drip irrigation management in watermelon crop REA
ROCHA NETO,ODÍLIO C. DA; TEIXEIRA,ADUNIAS DOS S.; BRAGA,ARTHUR P. DE S.; SANTOS,CLEMILSON C. DOS; LEÃO,RAIMUNDO A. DE O..
Precision irrigation seeks to establish strategies which achieve an efficient ratio between the volume of water used (reduction in input) and the productivity obtained (increase in production). There are several studies in the literature on strategies for achieving this efficiency, such as those dealing with the method of volumetric water balance (VWB). However, it is also of great practical and economic interest to set up versatile implementations of irrigation strategies that: (i) maintain the performance obtained with other implementations, (ii) rely on few computational resources, (iii) adapt well to field conditions, and (iv) allow easy modification of the irrigation strategy. In this study, such characteristics are achieved when using an Artificial...

Benefits of automated acclimatization during the pre-milking phase of lactating girolando cows REA
Silva,Irenilson M. da; Pandorfi,Héliton; Almeida,Gledson L. P.; Guiselini,Cristiane; Henrique,Hugo M..
The aim of this paper was to evaluate the automated acclimatization effects during pre-milking of cows on thermal conditioning, physiology, milk production and cost-benefit of the automated adiabatic evaporative cooling system (AECS). The treatments 20; 30; 40 min and control consisted of exposure time of pre-milking cows to the automated AECS. Sixteen cows were used with an average daily milk yield of 19 kg, distributed in a 4 x 4 Latin square design. The Tukey's test (P<0.05) was used to compare the means. The environmental variables, dry bulb temperature (DBT, ºC) and relative humidity (RH, %), were recorded every minute, which allowed the determination of the system efficiency through the Temperature and Humidity Index (THI). The respiratory rate...

Enhancing the analytical capacity for biogas development in Brazil: assessment of an original measurement system for low biogas flow rates out of agricultural biomass residues REA
Konrad,Odorico; Bezama,Alberto B.; Prade,Thomas; Backes,Gladis M.; Oechsner,Hans.
ABSTRACT This study presents a comparison of two systems for measuring low-flow biogas production rates. Grass silage was used as substrate in the experiment. Measurements were made by using (a) manual readings and (b) an automated system. The automated system proved to be efficient as it allowed readings of the biogas flow rates in real time. Results were stored in a computerized system with a safe access interface to download the recorded data at any desired moment. Furthermore, the systems also minimized the error rate in comparison to the manual method.

Plant growth response of subirrigated salvia 'Vista Red' to increasing water levels at two substrates Horticultura Brasileira
Ferrarezi,Rhuanito S; Iersel,Marc W van; Testezlaf,Roberto.
ABSTRACT: Subirrigation applies water and nutrients to the bottom of pots without wetting leaves, improving water use and reducing disease spread compared to overhead irrigation systems. However, water levels applied within the benches are often higher than required to promote capillary action, applying more water than needed and wasting pumping energy. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different water levels on plant growth of subirrigated salvia (Salvia splendens) 'Vista Red' in two substrates. Five water levels (0.75, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 cm) and two substrates {pine bark: sphagnum peat moss and peat: perlite (both 75%: 25% v/v)} were tested, with four replications. Substrate moisture was monitored by capacitance-type sensors...

Subirrigation automated by capacitance sensors for salvia production Horticultura Brasileira
Ferrarezi,Rhuanito S; Iersel,Marc W van; Testezlaf,Roberto.
Subirrigation is typically controlled using timers to periodically irrigate plants based on a pre-determined schedule. The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of capacitance-type sensors to monitor substrate water content and to control subirrigation automatically for salvia production in greenhouse. Additionally, we quantified the effect of different substrate volumetric water content (VWC) on growth of plants cultivated in 15-cm diameter × 13.75-cm height pots. Automation was performed using three EC-5 capacitance soil moisture sensors per experimental unit, connected to a system with a CR10X data logger, AM16/32 multiplexer, SDM-CD16AC relay driver and NK-2 submersible pumps. Substrate moisture readings were taken every 15 minutes,...

Research on automation of a reductive dissolved organic nitrogen analyser ArchiMer
Lepoupon, C; Lin, Rg; Benaim, Jy; Merks, Aga.
The accurate classical batch method of Duursma (1961), based on the conversion of Dissolved Organic Nitrogen (DON) into NH3, is used as a basis for a new automatic DON analyser. After testing different possibilities through mechanical automation of the original batch technique, in which the conversion is preceded by the degassing of NH3 and drying of the sample, the procedure of autoanalyses has been selected. This procedure was simplified to the extent that a compact unit could be constructed, which would easily be applicable on board ship. The automatic method has a conversion phase in which in principle only DON is dissociated to NH4+, whereas both NO2- add NO3- are not reduced. This requires selective conditions and particularly high silver purity for...

Low-cost automatic station for compost temperature monitoring AGRIAMBI
Jordão,Marcelo D. L.; Paiva,Kary de; Firmo,Heloisa T.; Inácio,Caio T.; Rotunno Filho,Otto C.; Lima,Tomé de A. e.
ABSTRACT Temperature monitoring is an important procedure to control the composting process. Due to cost limitation, temperature monitoring is manual and with daily sampling resolution. The objective of this study was to develop an automatic station with US$ 150 dollars, able to monitor air temperature at two different points in a compost pile, with a 5-min time resolution. In the calibration test, the sensors showed an estimated uncertainty from ± 1 to ± 1.9 ºC. In the field validation test, the station guaranteed secure autonomy for seven days and endured high humidity and extreme temperature (> 70 °C).

Almeida,Alexsandro C. S.; Botrel,Tarlei A.; Raine,Steven R.; Camargo,Antonio P. de; Pinto,Marinaldo F.; Salvador,Conan A..
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate an irrigation controller that was mechanically actuated by soil-water tension within laboratory conditions. The controller was designed and constructed using readily available hydraulic fittings and other componentry. The main components of the controller were a tensiometer; a rubber diaphragm that moves according to the variation in tension inside of the tensiometer; an activation rod that transfers the movement from diaphragm to the switch valve; and a steel spring that regulates the activation of soil water tension. Six irrigation controller samples were tested in the laboratory to evaluate the mechanical performance and component forces required to activate the controllers. The...

Irrigation controller mechanically actuated by soil-water tension: II - Field evaluations AGRIAMBI
Almeida,Alexsandro C. S.; Botrel,Tarlei A.; Raine,Steven R.; Camargo,Antonio P. de; Pinto,Marinaldo F.; Salvador,Conan A..
ABSTRACT In this study, a field evaluation of the performance of an irrigation controller mechanically actuated by soil-water tension (SWT) was performed. The controller employs a tensiometer used as a sensor of SWT to directly control a mechanically actuated hydraulic valve. Six controllers were installed in an orchard to control the irrigation for six rows of plants over 64 days. Each controller controlled the irrigation of one lateral drip line. The drip irrigation system was gravity-fed from a water source placed 7 m above the soil surface. The SWT and the pressure in each lateral line were measured to evaluate the performance of the controllers. All the controllers tested in the field autonomously initiated and terminated the irrigation during the...

Development and evaluation of an automated system for testing current meters AGRIAMBI
Saretta,Ezequiel; Camargo,Antonio P. de; Botrel,Tarlei A.; Pinto,Marinaldo F.; Katsurayama,Geancarlo T.; Frizone,José A..
ABSTRACT Current meters are equipment widely used for estimating flow velocity in rivers and streams. Periodic calibrations of current meters are important to ensure the quality of measurements, but the required testing facilities are complex and only available in a few institutions. However, advances in electronics and automation may contribute to developing simple and reliable calibration systems. Thus, this study aimed to develop an automated system for testing current meters, which consisted of a trapezoidal channel, a step motor, a tow car and a management system, composed of a supervisory application and microprocessed modules to control the motor and the data acquisition. Evaluations of the displacement velocity showed that it matched the reference...

Temporary immersion biorreators: efficient technique for the propagation of the ‘Pircinque’ strawberry Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Camargo,Samila Silva; Rufato,Leo; Magro,Maicon; Souza,André Luiz Kulkamp de.
Abstract The in vitro propagation technique via temporary immersion bioreactors is a tool that, through the culture in a liquid medium, allows an increase in the efficiency of seedling production. Several researches with the strawberry crop have shown greater efficiency of the system compared to the conventional process of micropropagation in solid medium. In this sense, the objective herein was to establish a protocol of multiplication and rooting of the ‘Pircinque’ strawberry, in temporary immersion bioreactors. Two distinct and independent studies were carried out, characterized by the multiplication and rooting stages of strawberry explants, newly introduced and registered in Brazil. Two culture media (MS and KNOP) were studied and, as a control...
