Genetic variants in the fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene confer risk for extreme obesity and modulate adiposity in a Brazilian population Genet. Mol. Biol.
Fonseca,Ana Carolina Proença da; Marchesini,Bruna; Zembrzuski,Verônica Marques; Voigt,Danielle Dutra; Ramos,Vivianne Galante; Carneiro,João Regis Ivar; Nogueira Neto,José Firmino; Cabello,Giselda Maria Kalil de; Cabello,Pedro Hernán.
Abstract Obesity is a major public health problem worldwide. It has a complex etiology, influenced by environmental and genetic factors. FTO has been recognized as an important genetic factor for obesity development. This study evaluated the contribution of FTO polymorphisms (rs9939609 and rs17817449) for extreme obesity in terms of the period of obesity onset, anthropometric, and biochemical parameters. The haplotype and the combined effects of FTO risk alleles on obesity susceptibility were evaluated. We investigated 169 normal-weight subjects (body mass index, BMI: 22.8 [21.0; 24.0] kg/m2) and 123 extremely obese individuals (BMI: 47.6 [44.1; 53.1] kg/m2). Genotyping was performed by real time PCR. Our results showed a strong association between FTO...

Secular Trends in Body Dimensions among Young Tennis Players from 1992 to 2008 International Journal of Morphology
Filipcic,Ales; Leskosek,Bojan; Sarabon,Nejc; Filipcic,Tjasa.
Several studies have examined both physical characteristics and fitness of children and youth. The aim of the study was first, to find the tendency of changes in selected morphological characteristics of young male and female tennis players of various ages in the periods 1992-2000-2008; and second, to find the changes in selected variables of young tennis players and to compare them with the results of boys and girls of same age from normal school population. Sample of variables included body height, body weight and body mass index (BMI). Multivariate analysis of variance revealed statistically significant differences in all main factors (group, age, gender and period) and additionally in interactions group*period, group*gender and age*gender. Univariate...

Relation of Anthropometric Profile and Performance in Competition for Mexican High School Football Players on the Offensive Squad International Journal of Morphology
Martínez,A. E; Peñaloza,R; Lara-Padilla,E; Berral,J. F.
The present study of Mexican high school football players on the offensive squad had the aim of determining the relation between their anthropometric profile, position on the team, and performance in competition. The study included 41 players from 15 to 18 years of age, studying and playing football at one of two high schools. Anthropometric measurements were taken (weight, height, diameter and perimeter of muscle areas) to determine the body mass index, body composition and somatotype. The results show that the anthropometric profile is related to performance (good/very good or poor/deficient), and that this relation depends on the position of the player. For linemen, good performance was associated with being tall, heavy and with a relatively high body...

Changes in Morphological Characteristics During the Period 2005 2014 in a Sample of Serbian 7 - Year-Old Children International Journal of Morphology
Pavlica,Tatjana; Rakic,Rada; Sironjic,Tijana.
Morphological characteristics of children commonly imply the processes of growth and development. Information on children's growth in height and their body weight is often used as the indicator of the children's health and nutritional status. As the parameters are changeable both temporally and spatially, it is important to provide their continual assessment. The aim of the study is to investigate the changes in morphological characteristics in a sample of Serbian 7-year-old children in the period 2005 2014. The data was gathered from medical documentation recorded in the period 2005-2014 in the local health-care centre "Dr Dusan Savic Doda" in Beocin, which is situated in the central part of the province Vojvodina, the north-west part of Serbia. Most...

Physical Characteristics at Different Ages International Journal of Morphology
Rexhepi,Agron M; Brestovci,Behlul; Krasniqi,Asllan.
The purpose of this study was to study, observe, and clarify the dynamics of physical growth, as well as changes of some morphometrical and physiological variables of Kosovo population. 17,894 males from Kosovo between 6 and 51 years of age and older, were measured:. body height, body weight, BMI, systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, heart rate, and VO max were recorded. The measurement data were processed through these descriptive statistical parameters: Mean, Standard-Deviation and the Coefficient of Variation, SD shows the similar dispersion of results between one age and another. CV signifies the reliability of the measurements that were carried out. The curve of body height for individuals between 6 and 17 years of age shows increases, for...

Factors Influencing the Body Mass Index of Adults in Canada AgEcon
Cranfield, John A.L..
This paper explores socio-demographic, economic and behaviour factors influencing body mass index (BMI) amongst 20 to 64 year old adults in Canada. BMI scores in Canada have increased, with gains stemming from disproportionate increases in female BMI. Econometric results indicate higher BMI scores for males, those born in Canada, those in food insecure homes and whites. Age-gender interactions suggest different patterns of BMI adjustment over the life of males and females; a pronounced inverse quadratic relationship between with age and male BMI is noted, while female BMI increases with age. Education, used as a gauge of inequality, is inversely related to BMI, while income has a muted effect. BMI is inversely related to level of physical activity, an...

Body Weight and Labour Market Outcomes in Post-Soviet Russia AgEcon
Huffman, Sonya Kostova; Rizov, Marian.
This paper estimates the impacts of weight, measured by body mass index (BMI), on employment, wages, and missed work due to illness for Russian adults by gender using recent panel data (1994-2005) from the nationally representative Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS). We employ econometric techniques to control for unobserved heterogeneity and potential biases due to endogeneity in BMI. The results show an inverted U-shaped effect of BMI on probability of employment for men and women. We did not find evidence of wage penalty for higher BMI. In fact, the wages for overweigh men are higher. However, having a BMI above 28.3 increases the number of days missing work due to health problems for men. Overall, we find negative effects of obesity on...

Poverty and health behaviour: Comparing socioeconomic status and a combined poverty indicator as a determinant of health behaviour AgEcon
Aue, Katja; Roosen, Jutta.
Studies in the area of health economics and public health have shown that low socioeconomic status (SES) and poverty are related to lower levels of health. Attempts to explain these differences have often made reference to the observation that poor health behaviours cluster in low SES respectively poverty groups. However, relatively little attention has been paid to the defining concept of SES and its appropriate measurement. Therefore data from the German Socio-Economic Panel are used to analyse the relationship between two multidimensional measurements to describe a) poverty respectively b) a low SES and health behaviour, including dietary behaviour, weight status and health behaviour in general. This study shows that both multidimensional indicators...

Effects of Impulsivity and Self-control on Calorie Intake AgEcon
Asirvatham, Jebaraj; McNamara, Paul E..
Neoclassical economic theory models individuals as making consistent choices over time and it assumes these choices are the outcome of rational utility maximization. Recent theoretical developments in the theory of consumer decision-making have drawn evidence from other disciplines such as, neuroscience (McClure et al, 2004) and psychology, and proposed more generalized models in a dual-self framework explicitly accounting for self-control or impulsivity (Gul and Pesendorfer, 2004; Fudenberg and Levine, 2006; and Brocas and Carillo, 2008). This study attempts to understand the dietary choices in a dual-self framework while explicitly identifying calorie intake owing to impulsivity and self-control. We construct standard psychological measures using the...
